  • Here is a Pro Tools Audio tutorial that will speed up your workflow. Print files directly to Dropbox using either offline bounce or real time. Then punch into those files without having to re-upload the entire project every time.

Instead of closing and reopening the session to find the missing files, You can select these clips in the clip list, right click and "recalculate waveform overviews" this will open the missing files window right away if the audio files have been moved. Save so much time!
Also in disk allocation you can choose to unselect "create subfolder for audio files" if you select "Custom allocation options" no more useless audio files folder!

Thanks so much Tom!! You are my guru. I'm working on my very first feature film and have learned almost everything I know from you. I just tried this method and it works great! I'm having trouble getting it to work if I bounce multiple mono files though (it creates a new clip when I do destructive punch in). It works just like your video instructions if I do interleaved though. Thanks again!

Both bounce and session settings need to be set the same (multi mono or interleaved)

You’re a braver man than I, using destructive punching so confidently! 😂 I do use it but am ridiculously careful about making 100% sure that a) only my intended tracks are armed (nightmare if you punch into something that’s then irretrievable), and b) I switch it out of destructive when I’m done!
Saving directly to Dropbox is a great idea and that’s a fantastic tip about it only needing to sync the punched sections. I’m too old school though, have to keep all versions at least until everything’s fully signed-off.

Dude post-roll doesn't record the changes in quickpunch mode. So no reverb tails will actually get recorded!
Also you can select all the files in the clip list and right click then choose rename instead of right clicking each clip in the edit windows, it will automatically bring up the rename dialogue for each file ;)
Also I would've first copied V1 in a separate DB folder... clients sometimes ask for the previous versions

Hey Thomas, Thanks for another great workflow video! Sometimes these are more important then the mix stuff, saving SO much time and headaches as you mentioned. It's smart how you use the Destructive punch! Never saw a need for that before this video.
Also, your batch renaming, it's not renaming the files on Dropbox because there's an option in the Rename Clip box to "name clip and disk file". This is what changes the name on your hard drive (dropbox) as well as in Pro Tools. When you batch rename, its only changing the name on the clip, not the actual file. That's why when you double click into each clip, that option is selected, and renames the clips on your drive as well.
Super annoying there's no option in the batch rename....but hopefully that helps.
Thanks for the amazing videos! Always look forward to your tutorials!

When do you use loudness correct plugins? Like, I use LMcorrect 2 to finalise the LUFS levels.

Never. How do your stems ever match the final mix if you are processing afterwards? They don’t.

Hi Thomas. Can you help us all by making a tutorial on importing omf/aaf files while conforming? We face several glitches while importing them into protools. Also, if you can add details as to how and in what way the video editor should export the same.

Hi tom! Does this applicable only to Dropbox? Or works fine with any cloud storages like google drive

I tried Dropbox and tried using a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive. They both worked. I've used Google Drive for sharing files in the past, but I'm not sure how it would work in this scenario because you can't actually write directly to Google Drive (can't choose Google Drive as bounce option in Pro Tools). I would be curious to know if anyone else knows how to have a local folder that syncs to Google Drive on your computer. That would be awesome because Google offers 15GB for free as opposed to Dropbox 2GB free version

Nice Tom, very clever workflow….but most of the time when I try this my stems get broken…that is it writes a new clip even know I’m in destructive mode and I haven’t separated anything. Any ideas?

Make sure your session settings match your bounce-interleaved or multi mono
