    Congratulations to Theo on only a slight smile when announcing the price. I'd have been doubled up with laughter. X4⁰ for me and satisfy my desire for 'classic' with a Magnum ice cream.

      100% agree. No Yorkshiremen have shown an interest in this vessel to date.

    Lovely to see a yacht with a tiller. You get so much more feel from a tiller. I grew up when any boat under 32 footish was steered by tiller. Call me old fashioned but at 72 I am. I also have gone full circle and am back to a Contessa 26, mainly for day sailing with a tiller of course. Good video 😊.

      I would FAR rather have either a Contessa 26 or even 32, and not spend the extra 400k +++ that this boat would cost. No doubt the Tide 36 will be a delight to sail, but at that price, very few will get to experience it !

      @@ukpittsHave to agree. At the end of the day most people have one month of holidays. The other 11 months you're basically stuck with weekend sailing. You're better off investing that money to retire early.

    To describe this as a “classic” is ludicrous.

      The lines are classic. Its a long way from the typical modern hull form, slender beam, narrow aft sections, its like a 60s/70s hull with a modern keel. The deck layout again, very much a classic look.

    Half a million for a 36 footer, no standing headroom... wow, yep, it'll certainly only appeal to certain potential buyers!

    Typical thorough job from Theo, well done. I did not see many elements of this boat that I liked, either in design or execution.
    I find the boat to be unattractive above and below deck. I recall that 'old-fashioned' cruisers were generally more appealing visually.

    She does have nice lines and is well finished but ouch! Half a million for a 36 footer 😬 How well is the hull built vs those built at the cheaper "production" yards?

    • @jayelwin
      @jayelwin 6 місяців тому +2

      Production yacht manufacturers have no problem making good hulls. They understand the chemistry and the process. What production boats lack is quality finishings. Hence the “IKEA” comments. Their hulls are good.

      @@jayelwin agree, not sure that's worth the extra money though, and personally I'd rather have the space, a little less speed and live with the IKEA furniture 🙂 Scale of production I guess contributes too.

    Super cool! -- QUESTION for you Theo -- If you were forced to make a decision for a world cruising sailboat, would you pick the Hallberg 50, Hallberg 57 or Amel 50? It would be for a couple to take 5 ro 8 years to do a circumnavigation. Much appreciated.

    Is the pendulum starting to finally swing back from tapered shoe boxes?

    • @rocykel
      @rocykel 6 місяців тому

      Hardly. People want the performance and the space that the modern hulls provide. A "classic" boat will be slower overall and have much less room inside.

    • @deerfootnz
      @deerfootnz 6 місяців тому

      @@rocykelThis boat will be faster than most modern boats. It has a displacement length ratio of 116. It will be easily driven and sea kindly as well.

    • @rocykel
      @rocykel 6 місяців тому +1

      @@deerfootnz On paper perhaps, but wide and flat boats are much faster at all other points of sail than close hauled in rough seas. Wide boats have so much more form stability as well (remember that stiffness goes as the cube of the waterline beam to a first approximation!), so they can carry much more sail. Hell, even my old 31-footer is specced for more sail area than this Tide 36.

    Almost any used sailboat from the 80s or 90s of this size will have equal or better accommodation, and will sail about as well. For a tenth of the price.
    I like the ambition, and I love that it has a tiller - every sailboat up to 40 ft or so should have tiller steering - but skimping on the beam and headspace makes this somewhat failed.
    The insane price suggests to me that they have their production set up for the military, where everything costs 2-3 times more than is reasonable or justified.

    For that money, you have to be expecting more exotic materials such as carbon and kevlar, rathan than a grp hull with an aluminium mast. The bowsprit also just looks like a cheap afterthought and the deck gear looks basic.
    The huge growth of catamarans have shown the market is keen for innovation, yet more or less all the monohull builders just regurgitate the same tried and tested models again and again.
