The latest firmware release is a huge improvement. I was recently talking with one of the CHDK developers. The USB remote control protocol now has the ability to turn the video record button on and off. That's great for UA-camrs. Now I don't have to get up to turn the camera on/off between clips.
Nice video! Is there a feature in CHDK to enable Manual ISO at the Movie mode for the canon G1X? what about extend the max ISO of automatic mode to 6400? because it's limit is only 1600! we could go further, it has a 1,5" sensor, thanks!
@gabrielsksa Interesting... Did you verify that the "PS.FI2" file is present in the root directory? If it is the only other thing I can think of is to try it a few times turning your camera on and off repeatedly in different ways. On The SX30is the firm update is all the way at the bottom after you press the Menu button. Are you working with an SX30is?
I just thought of something else. How did you unzip the CHDK files? Did you use Stuffit Expander like I mentioned? Or did you skip that step and just double click to unzip?
Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU. I have spent hours trying to get this to work, and your video completely fixed my problem. I'm so grateful! If you're ever in Phoenix Arizona, I seriously owe you a drink!!! Thank you!!!!!!
Additional info. Hope it helps others. Bought a 16gb class 10 SD card & it didn't work either. Was using my sd card reader that plugs straight into USB jack. Tried into my desktop 'puter & my laptop with no luck. Finally tried my wife's laptop that has a built in reader & it worked! Still befuddled why the 512mb card worked in card in USB card reader but the 8gb & 16gb would not. Other than that hiccup, your vids make it simple to follow. Thanks much!
Just used your EXCELLENT video to get CHDK to work on my SX40. Very good breakdown on the Firmware Version part - I'd struggled with that recently. Thankyou my good man, one new subscriber.
@89861002 Hmm good question. I think that is normal to have a different firmware version even among the same camera. Depending on when the camera was purchased it would be plausible to have different firmware. In fact I just checked the CHDK download server and for the Canon SX30 there are 6 possible firmware versions. 1.00E. 1.00H, 1.00L, 1.00M, 1.00N, and 1.00P. How did you find out the 1.00L was your firmware version?
Did you have any problem with the firmware update? I cannot find the option on my camera it is the SX240HS. Following all the instruction on line, but I am unable to either view the current firmware or see the firm update in my menu option? Very confused :(
@PenguinTeriyaki I'm sure we can get you running CHDK in no time. It may take some corresponding back and forth. Did you use a MAC or PC to unzip the files?
What made you think you can only use the card lock booth method? I'm just curious as to how you came to that conclusion. I don't have any videos on that method of installation yet. I might create one someday.
Your very welcome. Glad you found this helpful. I hear what your saying about the on screen video preview in low light situations. Video is a bit of a different animal compared to still pictures. Your probably familiar with shutter speed and how that affects low light stills. If you imagine video is a sequence of stills with a super fast shutter speed it's easy to see why low light video can be a challenge to process. CHDK won't do a whole lot to improve video other then the remote trigger
thanks for watching. did you try to download the ver.req file from the chdk website? sometimes when you create the file from scratch the default encoding is not set to unicode utf-8. that could be your problem.
Hi! Great video, very clear and concise directions. I have a Canon powershot g10, and when I got to the last step, the firm update option in the menu was simply not there. I definitely have the right files in the SD card. Maybe the powershot g10 simply doesn't have that option? Does your camera usually have that option when not setting it up for CHDK?
Thank you! Good question. This video shows you how to use the "Firmware Update Method". The nice thing about this method is that you can choose to run CHDK or to use the camera's default settings and easily switch between the two while using the same card. There is a second way to install CHDK called the "Card Lock Boot Method" which automatically runs CHDK upon start up of the camera. Hope you have a fun and safe trip overseas.
Great video, do you have one detailing the card lock boot method or do you know where I can find out how to perform it? Any info would be a huge help. Thanks, keep up the great videos !!!
@azopene The only think I can think of is that the code writers for CHDK updated the code with a newer version because this doesn't happen for me. Would you be able to document your problem with a video or still picture slide show and upload as a video response? Maybe there is a bug that needs to be worked out? Maybe you can help them find a solution?
If I mail you an SD card, will you install CHDK & the intervalometer script for me? Canon PowerShot SX530 HS. I'm more than willing to pay for your efforts.
How did you unzip the CHDK files? If you don't know and they were unzipped automatically then your web browser may have been set to automatically unzip downloaded files. You need to turn that setting off so that you can unzip manually using Stuffit Expander. Let me know if that helps.
Not sure what the problem is. Usually when people have this problem they are not saving the plain text file in the right format, sounds like you have a different problem. Could it be the way you are hitting the key combination? It works best for me if I hold down "func.set" for 3 seconds and on the 3rd second I tap "disp".
Yeah, if your a beginner I would not recommend using the card lock boot method. You have to format the memory card create a partition swap partitions. It gets confusing real quick if your not into computers. To answer your question all you need to do is format the memory card (erase the memory card). This can be done inside the camera or using a disc utility program on a computer.
I have seen that same clock. Kind of a cool little feature. I think you almost have it. Sounds like you just need to improve your timing. Its a little tricky to get at first. You also need to make sure you created the plain text file that was encoded with UTF-8.
@froobletoo Your assumption is correct. And your concerns are perfectly normal. I went through the same exact thought process. CHDK is not permanent. It tricks the camera with the firmware update, however the actual firmware is never altered in anyway. You can get rid of CHDK at any time by removing the files from your SD card. Thanks for sharing your concern.
@kiarns FYI I ran into the same problem with not being able to get to the firmware update. The first time I had that problem was because I unzipped the fiels incorrectly using the MAC default utility. Once I used Stuffit expander I was good to go. Another time I encountered the same problem as you and that was because I turne dthe camera on first and then switched to play mode, not directly into play mode. Let me know if you make any progress.
I'm not sure why you don't have access to your memory cards. What type of computer and OS are you running? Could it be a security feature in some sort of anti-virus software you installed?
Hi there! Great video, very clear! I am having a little trouble though… I have no "firm. update" option after the transition option (my options end there…). Any idea where this might come from? The ver.req thing didn't work either, but I was able to find the build using Acid. (it's a canon powershot S100, 101a) I'm using a mac, don't know if this is important or not...
@DoubleSnapProduction Thanks! I can tell you are a video editor yourself. And you are correct. Out of all my videos I spent the most time working on this one because there are so many detailed steps. One mistake will prevent the whole thing from working. Thanks for watching!
I have two suggestions for you. 1) To find the firmware version go into the settings of your Text Edit software and make sure encoding is set to "UNICODE UTF-8" I have a video entitled "How To Create A Plain Text File On A Mac" if you need more help with that. 2) You probably need to change the download settings in your web browser. I'll assume your using Safari I know this has been an issue for other users. Go to Safari --> Preferences --> Uncheck open "safe" files after downloading.
You need to go to the Canon A610 product page and look under the support and drivers tab and type in your computer type and OS. Click on the red triangle and if there is an available firmware update it should appear.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching. I'm not sure exactly what is happening in your specifica situation, but here's what I would recommend. 1) make sure your turning the camera on with the play mode button. 2) verify that you used stuffit expander to unzip the files. 3) verify that safari is not auto unzipping the files in the background. 4) verify that the "PS.FI2" file is in the root directory. 5) Try to download an older version of CHDK.
This isn't a replacement of the existing firmware. The factory firmware stays on the camera the whole time. If you want to remove CHDK permanently you just remove the CHDK files from your memory card. Does that make sense?
This means some of the CHDK files went missing. If you’re using a Mac you need to make sure when you un-zip the CHDK zip folder you do not use the default extraction tool pre-installed with your OS. You need to manually unzip the folder with a different application like Stuffit Expander. Depending on your web browser you may need to change the preferences so it does not unzip downloaded files automatically. Go to Safari --> Preferences --> Uncheck "Open "safe" files after downloading".
@Scobieboy468 Hey! Glad you stopped by. Never been to Ireland but hope to go someday. OK so you're trying to find out what firmware version is currently installed on you're S95. The good news is there are only 4 possibilities. Version "1.00E" "1.00H" "1.00I" or "1.00K". If worse comes to worse just try all 4 until one works. It can be tricky to create the VER.REQ file. Many little things can go wrong that cause the file not to work. Are you using a MAC or PC to create the VER.REQ file?
I could not access the firmware version of my A2400IS (A2300). So I downloaded the 3 different CHDK firmware updates. The newest one did not work, but the previous firmware worked. No harm came to my Powershot by trying the wrong CHDK firmware. Thanks for the tutorials.
Your welcome Spinnaker, Thanks for watching. Lots of folks are sharing their CHDK creations on the community page plus.google.com/b/101279002585355589068/communities/118189855605704812759
@89861002 Glad your back in working condition! Awesome! I seem to get a lot of similar feedback about strange things happening with CHDK. I guess it boils down to the fact that it is a hack and doesn't always work perfectly. Flukes and glitches seem to happen consistently at least among the people commenting here. For the most part I have had great success running CHDK personally. Can't wait to take some more time lapse photo's this weekend.
@PenguinTeriyaki I have not used WinZip for Mac so I can't speak for how well it works. Would you be willing to try Stuffit Expander? Its a free download. I know for sure that will work. Also did you notice the "PS.FI2" file present in the root directory?
well I guess I must be doing something right. Have you upgraded to the CHDK version 1.1.0 yet? I just updated mine last week. Its so much better! I can now control the video record button with an external USB trigger. The old version 0.9.9 only allowed you to control the shutter. Anyway thanks for the comment.
I installed CHDK on my PowerShot SX50HS and turned on the "Video without time limit" function, but it still stops recording once it gets to the same amount of storage just before it hits 4 GB. I'm not running out of space on the memory card, the card is formatted to exFAT and I have plenty of battery left by the time it stops recording. Any suggestions on how to extend the recording time?
Good question, I believe what your looking to do is artistically control the depth of field. So that you could have a flower in focus and the field in the background blurry. Or vice versa. CHDK, unfortunately won't be able to help much with this as far as I know. This is more of a lens / focus / zoom control depending on your camera. You can change the focus in post production but that's not really recommended, at least by me. Look up "depth of field"
I imagine it will likely be the same button for other cameras not endowed with the first three options. BTW, thanks so much for the really clear instructions. I had been feeling intimidated by the written descriptions on how to do this. Now, on to learning how to apply my newly-installed firmware. Thanks again, Nate!
I don't know about any filters built in to CHDK off the top of my head. That doesn't mean they don't exist I just don't happen to know about them. One of the big draws is that you can shoot in RAW. That will allow you to tweak the color settings and exposure settings much more than a JPEG after the picture is taken. To do that you'll need a program like PhotoShop, LightRoom or Aperture.
Well, I know it works on the SX260 HS that way for sure. It only took me about half an hour of grinding my teeth and turning my camera inside out and upside down until I finally acknowledged that, no matter which way I was going to slice it, my camera did not have an Alt, Shortcut, or Print button. Once you give up wanting to see what's not there, it's a lot easier to locate your real options. Deep philosophical insight... :) continued...
Not sure if you are still around BigNate84. I have an old Canon Powershot S80 that I want to put into an RC aircraft for aerial photography. I've got chdk extracted to the memory card but when I look at the files it has an PS.FIR not PS.FI2. I put the card in the camera and updated the firmware but nothing has changed :( Am I outta luck?
You may want to watch another video I made called "How To Create A Plain Text File On A Mac". Double check all your settings and try to create the file from scratch again.
bignate, just wanna thank you for your easy step by step instructions, i successfully installed chdk and timelapse script on my powershot s95 without a single issue :) Great video!
@toukaihobbies There are a number of things that could have gone wrong. Sometimes you just have to try it a couple of times to get the timing right when pressing both buttons at the same time. Or it could be that the plain text file you created was not done correctly. Or if you downloaded the plain text file it could be that it was not un-zipped correctly. You can start by trying those things. What camera do you have?
Keep in mind this tutorial is specifically for the firmware update method of installing CHDK. So if the ps.fi2 file is missing the firm update method won't work. So in that sense I was not wrong. I should have pointed out that the only alternative would be to use the card lock boot method. Unfortunately the card lock boot method is much more complicated to explain in a video and requires more patience and software skills. I haven't seen any good video tutorials for the card lock boot method.
Thank you for your tutorials man, they are so helpful! I still have a little problem though. When I press ok for the Firm update version my camera screen just turns black and I can't do anything with it, besides expelling manually the battery from the camera
What you are seeing is the default script running. You need to set your overrides with CHDK turned on via the alt - shortcut - print button. Once your overrides are in place you need to turn CHDK mode off while keeping the camera on. Again you do this by pressing the alt shortcut print button. Make sense?
@89861002 That is the first I have heard of that sort of thing happening. I don't really do code writing but it could be a glitch or bug in the code. What camera model do you have and what firmware version? You could try erasing the CHDK fromt he memory card and re-installing it. I know they update with new versions of code from time to time.
BigNate Great video. Question I have about an SX50HS Canon. There are two zip files on the CHDK download site for this camera, a 1.00b and 1.00c. I'm wondering which one should I use? Thanks Russ
Thumbs up for that little piece of advice. I cant verify for sure if it works since I don't have that camera, but I'll assume your info is good. Thanks for the comment.
I have the Canon PowerShot Sx40 & I did exactly what your tutorial told me worked totally fine. Then on step 7 I scrolled all the way down on the menu setting I couldn't find firm update. I'm confused I'm not sure what I did wrong.
@athewinn haha! Thanks for the offer. I don't pass through AZ very often but I appreciate the sentiment. Glad it worked. What camera did you get it to work with? Instead of buying me a drink you can always share a link to the video on facebook or various photography forums. That would be awesome! Thanks!
@y0utuve Great question! There are a few extra video parameters that you can access with CHDK on the SX30is. You can increase the video quality, however I have not experimented with this yet. I imagine you will need a very large memory card if you increase the quality to the maximum resolution as the record time will go down as resolution increases. Thanks for the question.
Hey BigNate I can't get CHDK installed on my Powershot A2500. Nothing I try works, even though it is on the list of Canon cameras that should be able to run it. Any suggestions?
10 yrs later and this video is still helping people. Good stuff Big Nate
N8, I tried for 2 days with written instructions. Your video set me straight. Thanks for creating this well put together tutorial.
awesome!
Happy to help! True statement. From the feedback I have gotten most people run into problems on Mac's because they don't use Stuffit.
You're welcome. Thank you for watching! Let me know if there is a certain CHDK topic you'd like me to cover in the future.
@rwillhoff OK let me see if I can help. How did you un-zip the CHDK folder? On a Mac or PC? And what program did you use?
Cheers. I did this over 10 years ago and wanted to do it again and couldn't remember :D
Nate- Your description of these steps is perfect. Thank you!
Thanks for watching my video. When you enabled shooting in RAW did you first create a badpixel bin? I have not heard of this problem before.
Thanks for jumping in to the discussion! There's too many CHDK questions to keep up with sometimes.
@89861002 Did you get CHDK working properly first? What did you do right before the screen went black?
Just used your EXCELLENT video to get CHDK to work on my SX40. Very good breakdown on the Firmware Version part - I'd struggled with that recently. Thankyou my good man, one new subscriber.
I had a hard time installing this until I came across your video. It took me step by step with no issues at all. Thanks!
fishlovindog very good!
You, Sir, are a lifesaver! I'd been looking everywhere on how to work this with the SX30is. Thanks very much for this!
Sorry I don't know how to speak that language. Maybe your question has been answered in the 200+ comments below? I usually respond to everyone.
What version of CHDK did you download? For example: 0.9.9 or 1.1.0 or 1.2.0?
@89861002 Hmm good question. I think that is normal to have a different firmware version even among the same camera. Did you have any problem with the firmware update? I cannot find the option on my camera it is the SX240HS. Following all the instruction on line, but I am unable to either view the current firmware or see the firm update in my menu option? Very confused :(

So I take it you followed the steps in this video. Did you create a VER.REQ text file yourself or download it?
thanks for watching. did you try to download the ver.req file from the chdk website? sometimes when you create the file from scratch the default encoding is not set to unicode utf-8. that could be your problem.
Hi! Great video, very clear and concise directions. I have a Canon powershot g10, and when I got to the last step, the firm update option in the menu was simply not there. @kubeen81 Awesome thanks for the feedback! I was really cose to getting a G12 myself but eventually decided on the SX30is. How do you like the G12?
Hope you have a fun and safe trip overseas.
just got a powershot sd1000 at goodwill for $3, this tutorial worked like a charm thanks :)
A brilliant tutorial. Step by step without missing important details.
Great video, do you have one detailing the card lock boot method or do you know where I can find out how to perform it? Any info would be a huge help. Thanks, keep up the great videos !!!

Thank you thank you thank you! Yours was the only instructional video that actually allowed me to load CHDK successfully :)
Elise de Kock Glad to hear it! Thanks for letting me know this helped you!
BigNate84 Followed the directions and it does not work on my Elph 300 HS.
+BigNate84 This does not work on my ELPH110HS
If I mail you an SD card, will you install CHDK & the intervalometer script for me?
Canon PowerShot SX530 HS.
I'm more than willing to pay for your efforts.

How did you unzip the CHDK files? If you don't know and they were unzipped automatically then your web browser may have been set to automatically unzip downloaded files. You need to turn that setting off so that you can unzip manually using Stuffit Expander. Let me know if that helps.
Good question. I'm not really sure about that. You may want to head over to the CHDK forum and ask one of the developers.
@bbauck10 It could be a number of things. Are you using a Mac or PC? WHat is the model number of your camera?
Not sure what the problem is. Usually when people have this problem they are not saving the plain text file in the right format, sounds like you have a different problem. Could it be the way you are hitting the key combination? It works best for me if I hold down "func.set" for 3 seconds and on the 3rd second I tap "disp".

Thank you so much sir for uploading this video. I have a question. Is there bulb mode in CHDK ?
+Ayan Mazumder hmmm. I have not used it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I'm sure you can control the bulb and in much more detail.
Glad you got it working! I'm not familiar with Stick and Dave Mitchell. Did the post comments here? There's a lot to read through.
I have seen that same clock. Kind of a cool little feature. I think you almost have it. Sounds like you just need to improve your timing. Its a little tricky to get at first. You also need to make sure you created the plain text file that was encoded with UTF-8.
You might still have some things to try. Did you download and unzip the CHDK files with a mac or PC?
Hi and thanks for the great video! I am trying to use CHDK on my SX280HS but no luck no matter I have followed all instructions. Any ideas please?
@froobletoo Your assumption is correct. And your concerns are perfectly normal. I went through the same exact thought process. CHDK is not permanent. Haha thanks! Glad this helped! Post some of your photos/videos on the CHDK G+ community if you get a chance. I always like seeing people's work.
Are you using a CHDK script for capturing lightning? I have only read about this on the CHDK wiki page. I haven't tried it out yet.
Hi there! Great video, very clear! I am having a little trouble though… I have no "firm. update" option after the transition option (my options end there…). Any idea where this might come from? @tambutsoo Happy to help. I'm looking to create some more CHDK tutorials in 2012.
Glad to help you out. Check out the CHDK community on google+ sometime. Lots of people posting their work and geeking out.
After you put the CHDK files on the blank memory card what files are you looking at?
When you say "open with expander" do you mean Stuffit Expander? or the generic expander that comes with the Mac OS?
This means some of the CHDK files went missing. If you’re using a Mac you need to make sure when you un-zip the CHDK zip folder you do not use the default extraction tool pre-installed with your OS. You need to manually unzip the folder with a different application like Stuffit Expander.
This was a super helpful video - really saved me time in doing the install. Thanks so much for making it available.
This video enabled me to put CHDK on my old, still working Canon S5IS. Thanks.
Hey! How is it working? I am not new to modding software on any device but I just wanted to ask you because I have exact same model.
Man, your demonstration is so cool, going to try this on my camera. Thank you
Good question, I believe what your looking to do is artistically control the depth of field.
What part is giving you problems? Did you get the firmware version?
I don't know about any filters built in to CHDK off the top of my head. That doesn't mean they don't exist I just don't happen to know about them. One of the big draws is that you can shoot in RAW. That will allow you to tweak the color settings and exposure settings much more than a JPEG after the picture is taken. To do that you'll need a program like PhotoShop, LightRoom or Aperture.
I'm not sure what would be causing this delay. Is it the default script running in the background?
@neyosi Sorry my friend I have not attempted to write any code myself. I use what other folks have developed. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Did you unzip the files on a Mac of PC?
Well, I know it works on the SX260 HS that way for sure. It only took me about half an hour of grinding my teeth and turning my camera inside out and upside down until I finally acknowledged that, no matter which way I was going to slice it, my camera did not have an Alt, Shortcut, or Print button. Once you give up wanting to see what's not there, it's a lot easier to locate your real options. Deep philosophical insight... :)
continued...
Oh cool. Thanks for translating. I don't know about specific camera models. You'll have to check the CHDK data base on the CHDK wiki.
Make sure you unzip the files properly. Are you using a MAC or PC?
Sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to you. Are you still having issues? I haven't come across this issue yet. What version of CHDK is it?
Keep in mind this tutorial is specifically for the firmware update method of installing CHDK. So if the ps.fi2 file is missing the firm update method won't work. So in that sense I was not wrong. I should have pointed out that the only alternative would be to use the card lock boot method. Unfortunately the card lock boot method is much more complicated to explain in a video and requires more patience and software skills. I haven't seen any good video tutorials for the card lock boot method.
Solved it! It was just a temporary thing, probably due to bad reading. Installed it with no problem. :)
Thank you for your tutorials man, they are so helpful! I still have a little problem though. When I press ok for the Firm update version my camera screen just turns black and I can't do anything with it, besides expelling manually the battery from the camera
+Alberto Beltramello I'm having the same problem...
+Alberto Beltramello hey man i got the same problem first then tried with "b" version, now it's working, you can do the same....good luck..:)
BigNate
Great video. Question I have about an SX50HS Canon. There are two zip files on the CHDK download site for this camera, a 1.00b and 1.00c. I'm wondering which one should I use?
Thanks
Russ
once you figure out what firmware your camera has you will pick the version of CHDK that matches. Honestly it couldn't hurt to try both.
Does this work for the Canon SX40 hs? I'm really in need of RAW photos.
@athewinn haha! Thanks for the offer. I don't pass through AZ very often but I appreciate the sentiment. Glad it worked. What camera did you get it to work with? Instead of buying me a drink you can always share a link to the video on facebook or various photography forums. That would be awesome! Thanks!
Hi Nate. Is this video still valid and 'latest'for installing CHDK on camera? I have a SX 10 is Canon - wil it be fine to nstall CHDK ?
@y0utuve Great question! There are a few extra video parameters that you can access with CHDK on the SX30is. You can increase the video quality, however I have not experimented with this yet. I imagine you will need a very large memory card if you increase the quality to the maximum resolution as the record time will go down as resolution increases. Thanks for the question.
Hey BigNate I can't get CHDK installed on my Powershot A2500. Nothing I try works, even though it is on the list of Canon cameras that should be able to run it. Any suggestions?
Are you using a USB cable to do this?
