    Oh wow, this is actually something I've always been curious about. Smash itself actually made me take note of it whenever the game slows down like when you use that one clock item.

    I notice he said "IK" (Inverse kinematics), but it seems to have been translated as "position themselves naturally on terrain."
    If my assumption is correct, translating it in that way is really interesting as it basically explains what IK does in the example without having to actually write it all out.

    • @PrimeSonic
      @PrimeSonic 7 місяців тому +33

      I caught it too. Definitely sums it up in the fewest words for anyone not already familiar with inverse kinematics.
      You could make a whole video on IK, but with this one being about blending, they glossed over it in a really smart way.

    • @MidlifeCrisisJoe
      @MidlifeCrisisJoe 7 місяців тому +22

      Yeah, Inverse Kinematics is a pair of words that don't really explain themselves well unless you already know what they're talking about, but that was a good way of explaining the concept to someone unfamiliar.
      I remember when IK was introduced it was a bit of a revolution. People were amazed that a character's feet would actually adopt slightly different elevations on things like stairs rather than just having one be correct and the other floating in space!

      @huevonesunltd 7 місяців тому +2

      IK it's one of these things that are too abstract unless you mess around with them yourself or show someone you moving it around

      @user24242 7 місяців тому +6

      Not really the role subtitles should play though. If the original version uses a specific specialist term, any translation should keep it.

    • @VieShaphiel
      @VieShaphiel 7 місяців тому +11

      Respecting a particular piece of source text and trusting the target audience to do their own research on an uncharacteristically unexplained terminology, or respecting the overall style of this whole channel and attempting to be more immediately understandable to most of the target audience? A tough dilemma, but also a common one.

  • @Stratelier
    @Stratelier 7 місяців тому +11

    A related concept is (for lack of the proper term) "modular" animations. For example, during a conversation sequence, any lip-syncing, eye or hand hand gestures or actual walking are things that can more or less occur independently of each other; so their animations can likewise be defined independently, allowing a game's animation system to animate multiple parts simultaneously.

    I do think some games could stand to use less blending though. Fast paced or more stylized games often look better when there is less or even no blending between animations. The 3D Guilty Gear games are a good example; they don't (or barely) use blending or even interpolation in that game. Almost every frame of every animation is hand positioned like a stop-motion, poses are held for a relatively long time, and characters skip straight from one pose to another with no in-between. In a game that relies on reaction speed so much, having the key poses of an animation come out on frame-1 makes a huge difference to the clarity and your ability to react to stuff.
    It also has the added bonus of making rollbacks less obvious since the first few frames of any animation (the one's that might get skipped over) all look mostly the same. A lot of people have noted that GG Strive has impressively good rollback, and while their netcode is definitely pretty good, a lot of the benefit comes from the animation style, which works in tandem with the netcode to minimize the downsides of a rollback event.

    Man, it's always interesting to hear about the intricacies of even the smallest things when it comes to animation. And that doesn't just apply to video games, either!

  • @BluishGreenPro

    Animation blending really helps fill in the gaps between animations. Depending on the complexity of a character’s “state machine” and the number of possible states they can alternate between at any given time, it often isn’t feasible to create bespoke transitions for each change in state.
    Snappy changes in pose work in more abstract or cartoony looking games, but smooth blending between states is important to maintain immersion in more realistic games.

    i guess it s specific kind of animation blending done for a lot of Fromsoft's Souls-like games as they have a fair few animations where the upper body will do stuff, but the legs dont animate as one would expect.

  • @ExploDjinn

    Certainly a big difference from when games had to have individual sprites for every little movement.

    Perfect video as always. It's funny how Sakurai-San mentions animation blending in regards to how the top and bottom half of the characters act separately in 3D games, fitting the characters' legs to inclined terrain, but funny enough, the same thing also happens in Smash Bros. On some stages, there are inclines that must be accounted for. Even in the air, many special moves need their own animation for the bottom half of the characters. Yet another detail that most fans don't think about while playing.

    I'll be honest. In the heat of battle, I always forget you can move while shielding against the opponent. Haha😂

    • @4xzx4
      @4xzx4 7 місяців тому +11

      Shield shifting can prevent shield pokes. For example, if you're a tall and thin character, you want to shift (tilt) your shield upwards to protect your upper body/head, otherwise multihits can still hit (shield poke) you, especially after your shield has shrunk a little. But yeah, it IS easy to forget about in the heat of a battle! 😅

    No way! I just learned about this in my university class yesterday. Turns out, Unreal Engine 5 is pretty good at this. It's kind of like building another animation as you decide how long the transition should take and which animation files should play along the way.

      Oh and don't get me started on the triggers and parameters to switch between all the animations, it can take a ton of time to figure out why one transition isn't doing what you want and you can have lots of those break on you the more you add to it
