Here's what I love: the appreciation of TOP is one long slow burn that keeps on growing. Slowly, probably to their chagrin commercially, but culturally beneficial. In 100 years TOP will be regarded, if history is any indication, as THEE funk/soul keepers and creators of the flame. That is what I hope for them.
My love for TOP came when I was 9 years old my cousins bought East bay Grease, I never stop following them till this day! When TOP came back home to San Jose that was the best Summers ever, early 70’s San Jose State gig, was one day I will always have in my life and will never forget💜 Sly & family stone Buddy miles So many more, omg that afternoon at SJ U was unforgettable .
TOP , Sr. Castillo I have ALWAYS LOVED EVERYTHING TOP performs . Thank you for the history. You guys are GREAT and God’s blessed you all to give such joy and life lessons ( in your songs) ! TOP is my muse.
By far the best interview of Emilio I’ve ever heard. Detailed and the stories about the lows of the band. One big omission though: not much detail about the period of Monster through Oakland Zone. Not one word about Brent Carter or Larry Braggs and all those years. Still, I loved listening to all three sessions of this interview.
Sounds like you had the greatest parents, ever. Your Dad was really into his kids. My parents were pretty cool too. I played in clubs by the time I was 14 and made a living at music for 50 years. I still play some. I’m 66
Great hearing the history behind this great innovator. It's obvious that his life was, and is, music. Some of the greatest music of all time. I don't think we'll ever see this kind of organic, funky, tight band again. Love this interview!
If you didnt have a horn section in the 70's you didn't count. Or eyebrows was raised.. Tower of Power, the best!!Even greater live T.O.P...So " "KNOCK YOURSELF OUT" LIVE. enough said!🛸🛸🤘🏾🤘🏾🛸🛸
No one considers the years 80 - 82 any sort of high point for the Tower - but they were incredible as of January 81, likewise the studio material they piled up with no record deal is superb. Michael Jeffries is a deeply underrated pop singer - ToP fan since 1972 and he has become my favourite lead singer of them all - heard only he & Edward McGhee, live, mind you. But Jeffries has the charm and IMO the best or jazziest ear. Pretty sure that 1983 video for PA TV show (with Ct and LP now, gone) you can see Princess Diana smiling at Jeffries
Thanks for this post! Grateful for UA-cam!
Absolutely awesome
At the age of 20, my band opened for Cold Blood, Loading Zone, Fleetwood Mac, Canned Heat, Elvin Bishop and Buddy Miles.

THIRD MUSICIAN to say that the Sly Stone show was a sort of ideal - the other 2 who have said the same are Stevie Wonder & John McLaughlin
El Presidente it is.
Wait.....his dad bought him a Farfisa AND a Vox Organ?!!!!!?!! Can I rent his dad 🤣
