Well done Tom, an excellent idea for a video and you handled the boat extremely well, by the looks of it to me. Would like to see this as a series with the final being a trot on the helm of an AC40 or 70...🤞👍
Class vid. Everyone should know Mozzy is a top dog sailor. I once saw him halfway up a beat about 13 years ago!😂 needless to say that was as close I got. Good wetsuit move straight out the primary school bag!
This is one of the most interesting sailing videos I have seen. The great filming combined with really clear discussion of what was happening really highlighted the techniques you were using, and made the impacts on boat speed very clear. Such impressive physical effort as well - watching the boat acclerate as your legs straighten is cool.
Great Video and my "takeaway" as we now enjoy using "managerese" talk in sailing: Your graphic comparison of the tacks and gybes and time/distance lost is a Biiig eye opener as to how precise your IT graphics are in general. Far easier to understand on dinghy's that average people sail rather than comparing top end sailing laboratories which is all a bit "over the top" compared with the best boats we'll ever get to set foot on. A very good performance for an "amateur" sailor. A little practice and more time spent on the water and you'd definitely be up there and maybe even better giving your understanding of the sport. As an amateur coach to juniors I was well impressed with the slalom course and will be implementing that as a fun exercise and hopefully move them forward a bit more. Cheers; well done, and keep up the magnificent work we all appreciate.
I loved this. Loved it! At age 60 I never really raced this kind of boat. Audrey and I finished up on RS400 and to be honest that was too brutal for us. Both of the Helm/Crew combos were top level to my eyes. Love the centre at Portland. We have popped in there for stays when cruising on our "bigger boat". We like to come and watch the young talent at the centre while having a coffee!
Outstanding video Tom! Really cool idea and an awesome session with the boats ad guys. I've only been on a 49'er twice but I loved it, so responsive. Awesome job slippery that boat!
Been looking forward to this one. Nicely done 💪 good video :D I wonder how you would have done over a weekend of training (or longer...?) I reckon you would have closed some of the gaps to the pros fairly significantly! For example, spending less time downwind in the gybes must be something you can improve once you're used the the boat and crew. Holding station might take a bit longer to master It would also be interesting to see them in an 800...
Great stuff Mozzy! You are making me dangerously close to purchasing a musto (used to sail contenders). I just need to work out how to get it past the wife !
Brilliant video to watch at this time (Paris 24), but the irony is that we hardly get to see any of the live action from Marseille, and consequently miss the opportunity to learn from these guys. Typical coverage shows boat being carried shoulder high and professional sailor waving. Personally I’d want somebody like Tom there doing commentary on the live feed giving real insights. I put this to Mark Jardine from YnY and he agreed there doesn’t seem to be anything, but he said he would be doing some coverage with Andi Robertson in the first week of August. Let’s hope it’s good!
We're using a phone to record and sailview to analyse. I often use my vakaros and sailviewer which is a mobile app, but when back home often use SailNjord Analytics. Pros and cons of each
I’ve not sailed the 49er, but I have sailed RS800 and looking at the comparison it looks like the pro’s kept the boat a lot flatter through the manoeuvres in particular the jibes, but overall it looks like you communicated well as a team and you seemed to be having fun. The 49er is a fab boat!
The wild thing about skiffs is having to dive off after a jib until the apparent wind is forward enough again to tighten up. Most other boats you want to jibe to the same angle you were at. Skiffs and the way the wind direction shifts according to how quick you are going it is a whole new paradigm shift in sailing all skiff sailors need to learn. In fact the compromise between boat speed and course is huge. VMG becomes a very hard balance to achieve. Sometimes going slower is better. Feels wrong. All the other complicating factors are still in play. Wind interference from land features. Tide or Current. Sailing is the art of compromise in Realtime over many many changing factors. Luv and Peace.
'''Joes vs. Pros" is an Outstanding Idea: Please please please expand this to 3-5 other boats....and create some kind of structured scoring grid for all of the assessment areas. 0=terrible, 5=pro-level skill or maneuver
Link in description for software. James and Fynn actually just have a waterproof phone they were using. Also doubles up as comms with their coach with Bluetooth headsets
The boys used a IP78 phone in rugged case and the sail viewer app. I often use the varakros atlas 2. A link to the app is in the description. It's been developed by coach Ivan Bujara. I've tended to use Njord Analytics in the past but need you to upload and really get on a desktop.
The olympics have been for professionals for decades, I’d you think that’s not the case then take a look at how many gold medalists have day jobs compared to those paid to do their sport……

Great video, what amazed me was how consistent the professional tacks were on the chart.

Great analytics, Tom. You're actually not very far off the pro 49er pace at all. A few solid tips from the boys too, no doubt.
Outstanding video Tom!

Nice work Tom, looking forward to the re match on the RS800:-)
Cracking stuff Mozzy as ever. Good luck in Paris boys, we're all rooting for you 🤙

We'll have to get them in an 800 for part 2!
That would offer a lot of insight.
Great stuff Mozzy! You are making me dangerously close to purchasing a musto (used to sail contenders). I just need to work out how to get it past the wife !
Go for it!
Don't tell her

Great video! Now let's do it in the 800 and see the results!?
Hi, what software / equipment do you lose to track tack loss etc

Agree really enjoyed this thanks for posting

Sounds a cool idea!
Awesome Technique!
This is a great idea!
Very Good
I assume those tillers don't let themselves swing so far as to fall off the water. I need some of that.
looks like a lot of fun
I’m be step closer to helming an AC boat I see (-8
Always interesting to get context on the other planet that pros live in
well done.
Looks like you need to come to the JJ Giltinan unofficial world championships in Sydney this March 😊
Would LOVE to do a Giltinan one day!
Nice work!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey, I was wondering what software+device you were using to measure the tack and gybe loss?
Link in description for software. James and Fynn actually just have a waterproof phone they were using. Also doubles up as comms with their coach with Bluetooth headsets
Now do both of you with your crew and in an RS800!
😆
Brilliant , that's what sailing is about ....and you even don't need to be " Sir ".
Epic vid, subbed!
But could James beat him in an RS 800? 😬
really intresting video, but i would have liked it to have some other aspects of measuring than just technike.
Best vid so far 🙂
Next challenge on an AC40 to warm up the real thing ..... ?
That's the dream!
@@MozzySails I do know your real dreams ;-)
dude, you did bloody well, pretty handy sailor.
Thanks! It was pretty cool to see close up how slick Fynn and James were. Puts in to perspective what you watch in the 49er racing
Awesome video. What's the analysis software?
SailViewer app. There's a link in video description above 👍
Good on you Mozzy. A lesser man would be in denial rather than accepting that there is a gap.
Someone's been watching global cycling network!
😉
crews are always ready
😄
Since when could you do tacks when holding station?
Mozzy what's the equipment you used for collecting the data and presenting the overlays?

Hey Mozzy is the video from Draycote you posted but assume took down going to reappear at some point?
If you got to my rs800 race footage playlist it's there. ua-cam.com/play/PLumHjesyC2WLwwWc6PHLrmoIMILbgF_HG.html&si=Pea1xIPZN2-DsRG2
What's the brand of the trapeze harness you guys are using?
It's made by Shock Sailing
470 next!!
You looked really good. Now let’s see how you do in 30 knots. 😅
Yeah, that might not go so well!
I thought all true pros turn up in their wetsuit
😂
Size matters doesn’t it?
Are you really an amature
Yes, as no one pays me to sail and I have a full time job... I've had 5 days on the water since June before getting in the 49er for this video
The olympic are not for profesionnals....
