  • As Vancouver grows and evolves, we need to ensure that there are housing options that meet the needs of the diverse households that live and work here, including more "missing middle" housing options. With the help of Quickviz, we illustrated the changes proposed to allow more of this type housing in low density neighbourhoods across the city as part of the implementation of the Vancouver Plan. The animation depicts a standard block with a variety of housing options, including multiplexes (buildings with up to 6 units on a single lot).

Very excited about this. I work all through Vancouver, going into new homes, and I'm constantly dismayed by the inefficient design of duplexes and laneways. Things can be much better, and more people can be housed on these blocks.

Can you please make a video on the viability of replacing the current West Coast Express rail system that currently stretches from the Vancouver waterfront to Mission, BC with a high speed rail system that stretches from the Vancouver waterfront to Chilliwack? We could add more stations and build mixed used condo developments around every station. We could be creating tens of thousands of homes and millions of sq ft of commercial space with a very convenient transportation system that would take thousands of cars off our roads.

Scrap all the red tape and start taking action. The west coast express is the most under utilized transit system but it could be a gold mine for the city. More stations could added and surrounding land could be leased to developers to build mixed use developments all along the route of the west coast express. Canada is the only country in the G7 without a high speed rail system. This is exactly what we need to increase housing supply with a transit system that stretches from the waterfront to Mission. Prioritize people over freight like in the USA.

Long overdue. Let’s explore infrastructure based Transferable Development Rights (TDR) to mitigate zoning and permits.

This “missing middle” messaging is very misleading as it suggests that homes that cost somewhere in the middle of Vancouver homes is missing - say homes in the $1 to $2 million range and that is simply not the case. All over the city $1 million condos and $2 million townhouses are being built. What is missing is government purpose built homes for those on low income.
The city wants to densification for short term tax benefits. Why else damage functioning neighbourhoods? Why else create this video to influence our belief that more is the answer.
