Just took first break walked out the kitchen for a smoke and Mike G comes through yet again. This is probably the favorite aerial machine I have. Such a sleek agile fighter
Not survivable. Not even in Cold War battlefield of Central Europe. Which is the war that USAF had to be prepared to fight. Canada adopted F-5E (CF-5E), and RCAF acknowledged that it was ineffective and not-survivable in high intensity warfare in Europe with Warsaw Pact.
It was subpar in every way... Only thing it was good at was replicating the ACM tactics of Russian fighters to give our Pilots and their superior aircraft some dissimilar combat training...
That is a pretty rapid roll out despite the cool reception. Too often the powers that be compete for resources instead of combing talent toward mutually beneficial ends. Great docuhistory.
@@MikeGuardiaAuthor not only can it do that. The pilot can hear the F 14 pilot knock on their canopy so that they can communicate with sign language. 🤣
It's a shame that politics (and possibly graft) got in the way and prevented this gorgeous aircraft from going into widespread service with the USAF. The F-5 is an almost perfect design for its job.

If that thing had had a shorter nose, it would have been interesting for the Navy as well. Prior to Crusader/Phantom, jets built to operate from carriers tended to be rather small. As for the F-5 Freedom Fighter, I strongly suspect the fabled gun built into the A-10 Warthog (GAU-7) to be both heavier *and* longer than the entire airplane.
Technically the f20 has the fuselage of the f5. A single engine just changed the rear slightly. And the x29 was made from an F5, not built from scratch and definitely not from one of the 3 f20s built, 2 crashed and the other is in a museum. The x29 was literally built with the fuselage of an f5
@@damien5748 no you are not. Simply having a single engine does not make it the same design. In your world you may be right, but in the world of aviation you are not. Simply read about the x29 and you will find it used an f5 fuselage. And again, SO did the f20. The f20 is an F5G, it was not a whole new design, just an update. The F20 designation was marketing, it is in the F5/t38 family.
Dad had gobs of time in this airframe as an IP @ Webb, Laughlin, Perrin, & Sheppard while in ATC. Solid, maneuverable & dependable it was, and is still today, the quintessential a/c for pilot/ fighter lead-in tng.

This series is great, keep them coming please !
Can only upload as many as were made in the 80s ..
Love it sir, thanks again Mike. 👍
I confess to not knowing anything about this jet fighter and despite being 50 yrs old am still learning about #OurHistory, really grateful.
I absolutely love this aircraft.
One of the best looking aircraft ever!
The best fighter the Air Force never used, wasn't big, expensive or complicated enough.

Man, just found your books on Audible a couple months ago. Don't know why it took me so long to look for a UA-cam Channel.
It’s such a shame, the F20 was how the F5 was supposed to be and by time it got there, no one wanted it.
The Final Countdown-fantastic movie! Starring Kirk Douglas!
One of the bestest looking pocket rocket yanks ever built..

Is that Ronald Regan at the F5-E/F Rollout? 26:00 in the crowd and 26:20? In what capacity was he there as? Cali. Governor or GE Spokesman?
Governor of California
That's not the F-5, this is the almighty MiG28.
But can the MiG-28 do a 4G negative dive? While flying two meters from an inverted F-14? 🤪

But that's an awesome piece of T-38/B-52 video.
The Bridges At TOKO Ri-fantastic jet fighter aircraft carrier movie!
KISS aeronautics (Keep it small, stupid) the F-5 FF & F-5 Tiger II were great fighters, can still be used today.
T-38 as a supersonic trainer.
Great video! The title? Northrup should be Northrop.
Ah, good catch. Thanks for pointing out.

The little fighter that COULD and DID.
The K.I.S.S. principle in flight.
And such a good looking and durable design really, when I win Euromillions, I'm buying a T-38 or a F-5B for weekend trips
Did the f5 and f8 had the chance to meet in a dogfight? If so who won?
In the vertical fight, the Crusader won. In the turning fight, the F-5/T-38. I say T-38 because Top Gun initially used T-38s as MiG-21 simulators.
Great Fighting Jets? Looks and sounds like Discovery Wings to me.
Singapore used the F-5E until 2015 and their replacement is coming soon but can’t beat an F-5E in the sky.
