Thank you Chairman DeFazio. Hunter Harrison destroyed the class 1 railroads in Canada before he implemented his PSR scam in the US. There should be bipartisan support for holding the railroad tycoons and wall street jackals accountable for their crimes and reckless greed. Rail workers, shippers and customers deserve a new and better deal. Keep up the good work. Love from Alberta, Canada.

I’ve been Railroading for 15 years. That past 4 years this have gotten so bad. All the experienced managers preached against PSR and were fired and we were left with incompetent Yes men.

Just retired after 41 years, hired out In train service retired as a Sr MTO, guy nailed it above in these comments. Most these managers are just ignorant as to what it takes to move a boxcar from A to B.
Simply bleeding carrier colors and out efficiency testing those that do what they can't. Very true, at least the last 7 years job went to hell.
Gotta say the RRB is great but would not recommend the job to anyone today ... just a mess

For Penn Central, Conrail and finally Metro North Commuter Railroad in the East. From watching these videos, it appears that not much has changed! May God Almighty support our Unions! Worked for Norfolk Southern from 2005-2020... If you are a hard worker and show up to work everyday wanting to do a good job take yourself somewhere else cause I am here to tell you, scream at you, plead with you to take your hard working self somewhere where it will be appreciated. These Class 1s do not deserve you. I promise you. I called it quits after 15 years cause it was that horrible of a place to work and I haven't looked back with a single ounce of regret.

I remember when Conrail was split between CSX and NS Things at NS were so bad They didn't have money for welding rods but they had money to buy eggs to put between the switch points to do a test to see if you had checked the switch before throwing it One day I was called to take CN 334 from Frontier yard to Buffalo to Mac Yard It had snowed the night before not much The switches at Sycamore were frozen no heaters had been turned on Then when these trainmasters have nothing to do into the car then sit in a car watching a crew switch until they can get them on some rule violation

Sir I work for one of these class 1 railroads and for the past 10 years all they have told us is how they want to cut the trains down to 1 man crews they want to eliminate the conductor job entirely and they are using this as a way to get what they want the reason they cannot hire or keep employees is because who is going to want a job that the company continually says they want to eliminate. . .if you want to fix the supply chain issue that these companies have caused and get employees back into a job historically NO BODY walked away from force these railroads to run with 2 man crews make it law that they cannot operate trains with a single employee do something to limit the length of these trains we are currently running trains 2-3 times longer than we have ever seen with no additional pay stop letting these companies manipulate our federally mandated rest by keeping us held hostage in hotels a state away from our families until we have been there for over 24 hours only to work 12 hours home and only get 10 hours at home before we are called again. . .help us fight for our contracts we currently make the same amount as employees did back in the 90s with no tax claims and paying almost half of our checks in insurance because these billion dollar corporations say they cant afford to pay for our insurance or give us a raise this job used to be done by generation after generation of grandfathers fathers sons etc now they want to make things so bad that we all quit so they can rehire slaves at minimum wage to move 4 miles worth of hazardous materials by themselves do the right thing talk to the workers not the CEOs or company reps do right by those of us suffering and begging for a way out of this hell they have made the railroad into between PSR no sick time and new attendance policies that keep us on call 24/7 with no scheduled days off to will see even more employees quit and the crisis these shippers face become even worse when the companies have to scrap the bottom of the barrel to hire anyone

The damage is done. I don’t think people realize the severity of the actions the railroads have done. They’ve gone into small communities and destroyed what trust they’ve had. Good luck getting people to hire on out of these communities now. These trains have to pass through communities of mere thousands in a town. And they fired 50% of their workforce. You think those communities are just going to forgive and forget. Not going to happen.

Thank you Mr Defazio, you nailed it. I'm a locomotive engineer and if I may add it should be a law there are always two crew members on the controlling locomotive of every train. (Common sense). Also no trains longer than 6,000 ft. So that the trains can fit between road crossings. ( Again common sense).

Anyone who has been on the railroad knows that crews have no life. During my brief time at the BN it was clear your job was 24/7/365. Many guys had campers in the yard lot just so they could get some rest and most cars had bumper stickers with "Eat, Run Trains, Sleep", which was essentially true. After living it for awhile and learning about the impact on your personal life ( you don't have one), I moved on, made less money, but kept my wife and was able to spend time with my kids as they grew up.Under PSR, your lack of a life as a crew member only got worse. Harrison was a monster, and although he's dead, his twisted operational philosophy lives on.

The employees they trust to over see their assets and rolling stock they continually look for ways to fire or suspend .
Looked at as a liability rather than a asset

I know nothing about the RR system and even less about the evolution of its operation over the years. I watched this video because I thought it might be relevant to the "supply chain" crisis that's in the news every day. I'm glad I did.
It appears that once again big money lobbyists, corporate accountants and the US government have joined forces to screw things up...to fix something that wasn't broke. Typical!
Like most Americans I just assumed everything was honky dory with the railroad system; especially since it is not a government enterprise. Boy was I wrong.
This mess is all under the radar. For most people the railroad system is the last thing they think of. This situation deserves a great deal more exposure in the press. Personally I'd love to read a detailed description of what exactly happened to the RR system over the last fifty years.
