As of i know, 2519 the engine that was chosen was saved from being scraped but it was put back in service in 2017 with brand new up paint and still runs to this day that i know of.

When the US says NO! to Thomas the train engine... I am in my late 30's and work for a class 1 railroad in the US and I think this is cool as hell.. UP should have cleaned the windows and replaced the safety decals and left the rest alone.. Oh well.. it is what it is..
I'm sure it's been said before, But if the road number, data plates, and road name would have been left, and if the widows wouldn't have been painted, I'd be willing to bet they would have just left it alone.
P.S.I think some of these locomotives will end up on short lines.Or midsized regionol railroads.There are a few in my neck of the woods.One is the AC&W and the YADKIN VALLEY railroads.Both have 6 axles units now.Times have sure changed.Used to be shortlines or regional railroads you would see gp40 orgp38 now its sd40-2 and Dash8 with sd60m.I get a kick thinking about people.Waiting and exspecting to see a short freight trains.Only to see 2 or 3 large locomotives pulling a long mixed freight.
This is Amazing on so many levels, I can't even mention them all. The thing I'm most curious about is how the footage at the end of the video was shot. It looks like aerial photography from a helicopter. IDK too many Graf writers or crews with access to that type of equipment. The time lapse sequences are fantastic also. The concept, execution, techniques, and final product are all to be admired. This is truly taking Graf to a new level. My only criticism, and I'm actually kind of on the fence about it, is that I've never really condoned hitting locomotives - kind of like I don't believe in going over the numbers on freight cars - not just so they don't buff the piece, but also to show a little respect for the rail company. However, I seem to have less of this sentiment these days, though I probably would still follow these self-imposed rules if I were active. In any case, I give this this production a mega thumbs up!
It just dawned on me that the areal shots were almost certainly short using a drone. I'm so old that I tend to forget things like that exist. These guys have incredible resources. I wonder how they finance their productions.

The people responsible have multiple social media accounts and a website thisisindecline.com/ I imagine it shouldn't be too much trouble for your Special Agents to track them down. They're quite prolific in California, especially the Bay Area where they've made quite a mess around West Oakland. This crap causes more security, more fences, more cameras and more distrust between Union Pacific and the communities they serve.
I give you credit for trying but I don't see anyone stepping forward on this. Honestly the best thing you could do is just repaint the number plates and other identifiers and leave it as something unique for a year and then using the same loco, have a design contest to have a group paint/tag the loco with an approved design. This way in the future people will go through the legal channels to have the LEGAL opportunity to paint a Loco that will literally travel the country. You could do this every year for Positive PR.

Even though I built a ho scale of this loco I agree with UP. I watch them and other companies locos for years. I can’t enjoy them if they are not moving down the line. Far away they did a good job but they did need to leave the safety items alone. Hate me if u like but they need to be caught. I’m a trucker and understand what a safety item is. I go in and out of rail yards. Union Pacific I would like to see a useable loco in like near paint scheme. On mine ho scale I got crazy with it. Best of luck with it.

The spray paint they use is probably relatively cheap with no UV protection. The tiger scheme would have been faded and peeling, and looking awful in short order. UP threw some primer over it pretty quickly. PSR will probably see this unit scrapped in the next decade anyway.
UP would have probably kept it if they would have first taped up all of the safety stickers, number boards and lights. Plus either used stickers for the eyes instead of paint. I think that this was probably the main reason why they quickly repainted it due to the glass and number boards being painted. Yes, tagging trains is illegal, though sometimes you can call it what it is. That is art!
As the owner of 9 railcars for my business, I get really fucking tired of dilettante artistes who think they have some sort of 'right' to paint on my railcars. I've made it policy to spend the ~$50 and an hour to undo the graffiti vandalism when it occurs. Unfortunately, it also involves some other dollars for renewing the reflective stencils on the sides. I hope they get caught. If they don't get caught, I wish they would PM me the address of their homes and I'll come right over and do some "art" for them.
I mean no they shouldn't of trespassed and vandalized over it, but a lot of graffiti looks really cool, but that dosent excuse the fact of it being vandalized. But I think graffiti looks cool on a lot of railroad cars, but it still dosent mean you should.
They should have gotten permission from U.P. or N.S. or C.S.X. to do a WW2 commer. for the Flying Tigers AVG. P-40s, one of the most popular paint schemes for airplane modelers. How about it, Alas, or Kato, or Micro Trains ???
