    Riot doesn't make things strong for 2 reasons:

    the thing about chamber, is although he was broken and it took them way too long to reign him back in, you can still see some of the lasting effects of this drastic meta change today. even if the agent doesn’t see a ton of play down the road, a new (or previously underutilized agent) high powered agent can change the meta while they’re strong, but the meta change will likely persist in some ways even once they’re brought down to a reasonable level.

      @@lucidvibes8133 well there are a couple problems with just haphazardly nerfing the strongest part of an agents kit. developers generally still want the strongest part of the kit to remain the strongest part of the kit. it’s generally considered a good thing to keep an agents identity still similar to what it was previously. this is especially true if it’s the agents signature ability. for example, imagine if they reworked jett a bit and her cloudbursts lasted far longer and they nerfed her dash further. she would just feel like a completely different agent, and might even feel like more of a controller. another issue is that if the agents is very strong like chamber was and they just jumped to nerf his tp without proper testing, (imagine prime chamber with something like an 80%+ pick rate iirc to current chamber with less than 5% probably) they could single-handedly completely flip the meta overnight, which is simply not good for the game. although the problem is often pretty obvious, the solution is usually not.

  • @pronouncedArceus
    @pronouncedArceus 17 днів тому +3

    I think a big reason for this is because the agents they introduced at launch fit their core role so well that the new agents are forced to fit more of an off-role. Look at the sentinel class for example; it’s clear that information and stall are most important for the role at the highest level, and the two sentinels with the best mix of information and stall are cypher/kj. They can’t introduce a third sentinel with utility like those two without widening out the role more, which leads to us getting sentinels - heavy stall with deadlock and vyse, and aggro-info with chamber

    • @filewr8515
      @filewr8515 10 днів тому

      Exactly that, you can also see a similar thing with the duelists at the pro level, the only good ones are dive duelists (Jett, Raze, Neon and in a way Yoru), and Riot hasn't been able to fix that problem since the launch of the game. You can see that with the current agent releases they're trying to change these things about the meta with Deadlock being a pure stall sentinel to give teams an agent with this functionality that isn't Sage, Iso being a non-dive duelist that for some time competed with the other duelists (the 1 week when he was OP), and Vyse being very clerly an anti-dive sentinel.

    I think it'd be useful to have some more powerful agents. I don't play CSGO so I don't know the exact details but I know there was a time where they buffed an under-used gun which increased it's usage rate and then later reverted the buff but it still kept a fairly inflated use.

    7:09 That's a great point, but I think the problem is the meta in Valorant being mostly the same since the game's release.
    Sova, Breach, KAY/O, Jett, Raze, Cypher, Killjoy, Omen, Viper, Astra are always the meta, and the way to change this is to nerf some of them and buff agents that never were popular.
    In fact, it's happening right now with the Phoenix changes, the Omen nerf, the Neon buff.
    Valorant needs a different meta.

    I think another aspect to powercreep in other games (especially card games) is that there is in many cases direct financial incentive for companies to introduce power creep. Taking a card game like Yugioh for example, they would probably see a lot less profit from new packs unless there were re-prints of current meta cards if they didn't create cards powerful enough to become the new meta. And while there are some choice examples of old cards becoming good because of a new archetype or new additions to an existing archetype, it's not nearly as common as big, shiny new cards coming out with 3 paragraphs of effect text to make it just a little better than the cards currently in circulation with only 2 paragraphs of effect text.
    On the other hand, most val players don't buy the new heroes that come out, instead unlocking them for free either on release with the on release missions or with Kingdom Credits, and just deal with any that they're missing as a result of that strategy. I also think agent powercreep would go against one of their core design pillars, which is that it should ultimately be a gun-focused game. Agents getting stronger would inherently mean that they would either have to powercreep guns as well to maintain whatever balance of gun power : agent power they like, or scrap that core design pillar of the game.

  • @ResearcherKeo
    @ResearcherKeo 18 днів тому

    I think it's a good thing the newer agents pop up a little weaker than the rest. For one, it doesn't give Riot a bad name for Pay to Win, releasing an overpowered agent each season or so with early access if you pay for them then nerfing the agent when it is released to the whole player base; And second, it gives players time to learn the agent, try them out while still being scared of playing the agent in ranked - and after they become a viable pick, the players will have a base knowledge of how to use them and won't troll ranked games

  • @ArkbladeIX
    @ArkbladeIX 18 днів тому

  • @Sorcerer_Lynx
    @Sorcerer_Lynx 15 днів тому

    The problem with what you suggest is that its not really possible to do. I mean, how can they know for sure how strong an agent or even just an ability will be overall ? On a specific map with a specific situation and a specific combo, its easy to dial it up or down to make it as strong as you want it to be. But the more variable you include, the more diverse the situations, use cases for the abilities, team compositions and personnal playstyles, the more you increase the difficulty of adjusting the power level of the agent.
    Chamber was overpowered for 2 main reasons:
    - having 2 teleportations was too versatile and he wasn't risky enought. wHich is easy to adjust.
    - 2 of his abilities are weapons, so he isn't impacted by economy as much as the others. Which is harder to adjust because its also skill based of powerful those weapons are (how many bullets does they need, how high the prices for the bullets should be) if it was a more classical ability or only the switch speed and duration had to be adjusted, it would have been easy.
    Fade was easier to adjust power wised because her abilitys are closer to others mechanically, even her ultimate. So its easier to have her at the power level you want and to adjust later slightly.

  • @someone_insane5889
    @someone_insane5889 18 днів тому

    I think this is a common difficulty with any hero shooters is finding balance between what the playerbase wants and what the game needs. Riot needs to find a way to not introduce new agents and produce new content in some other ways. It is no surprise that any new agents that came out are not being used (except for the strong ones such as clove, buffed iso and buffed neon; i.e. vyse have 1% usage rate in comp, harbour have 0.5% usage rate). This is the effect of maps being constrained and designed in mind for the original agents before chamber. that means any agents that came out during and after chamber have a hard difficulty finding its foothold in the maps. Having more and more agents also means much harder for new players to pick up; its not a hard difficulty learning curve yet but its very much heading towards that. (look at how soon OW2 died).
    Its also no surprise that valorant is becoming more and more rng/less punishing as valorant keep debuffing direct damage utils and buffing more gimmicky utils such as the neon ult (there was no punishment for using neon ult because its guranteed a kill). Riot does not have the freedom like OW2 to put wacky abilities as all agents are contrained to ground movements majority of times. Jumping and vertical movements cannot be used to avoid those hypothetical abilities if added because majority of agents don't have that mobility (with raze and jett being the only exception).
    anyways this just pushes for valorant to release new content besides the ones that relate to comp directly

    We need temporary powercreep.
    6 mounth after the release of an agent he need to be better than other agent, because if the agent is perfectly balanced and exact same place than other char, what is the point of training a new agent that will not be better than your current choice ? So yeah, the agent need to be OP for 6 month, and then when everyone know how to play him we balance him back.
    Anyway, the problem with the other agent isn't really they are bad. The problem is that they are not sane to play. @@Meghannyah I was mostly making fun out of your reasoning, to be exact the part: "If the agent is perfectly balanced and fills the same role as other agent what is the point of learning him?".
      First of all, there are no 2 same agents, every agent occupies a slightly different niche in the Valorant ecosystem, so every new agent fills a role that no other agent fully filled before.
      Second of all, going by your reasoning why should I learn anyone besides Jett? Her kit works in such a way she will never be truly bad, and even if for some time there will be better options they will eventually get nerfed and Jett will probably never be a bad pick.

    I don't agree with the need fo power creep for two reasons:
    1. Picking up a new agent takes time, especially for pros; integrating it into the team comp takes even more time. Not seeing new agents immediately played is natural.
    2. releaseing an OP agent is a gamble on how well they predicted what made them powerful, and how can they balance it. After Chamber, it's understandable they don't want to take it.

  • @eslee_alien
    @eslee_alien 18 днів тому

    I think the reasonable level of powercreep is indeed needed. Or some better hype'ing for the new release.
    In the first case, if you receive something that feels underwhelming you can be discouraged to that character, and even if they got better later because of buffs or reworks, players could still be uninterested in playing that agent.
    In the second situation, you can make a character that just "clicks" with some players, and will stay with that character no matter what. Viper was that example at the start of the game, before her reign. She was niche, but still had some dedicated players population. Or with Yoru, who needed to have an entire rework to "be viable" but had his fans from the start (I was one of them XD), because he was teased very good, imo. When Riot advertised him as a "lurking duelist" I felt that it's finally a duelist for me, because I was a Cypher main in that time. XD
    Tbh I miss when they were teasing characters on maps which were chaning from patch to patch (Yoru and Icebox, Kay/O and Breeze, Chamber and Fracture). You could find them just playing the game and have somekind of suprsie. Now we have BP cards mostly, and some random posts

    I Dont even know why they made some nerfs when the agents were pretty much balanced:
    Omen smoke
    Raze satchel
    Jett smoke (from 4.5-2.5)
    Viper molly
    There for example were high skill ceiling abilities to use but they nerfed them even though they weren't a big problem in pro play and ranked.
    Omen one ways delayed a choke for max 16 secs and you can use util go get past a one way.
    Jett smokes beeing 4.5 just made her staying a live for 2 sec longer on site ,which doesnt make a difference at all, since she either dies beeing caught from cypher or she gets in and does nothing.
    Raze satchel was a very flexible util and the only util which she could quickly cast beeing valuable, now ppl can shoot it and it doesnt pop making entries so worse, when enemy nades or sova shocks coming while popping first satchel, beeing just unlucky timed and 0 tactical is a very bad experience in a tactical shooter which is stupid

      - Omen one ways were the thing that made Omen the best controller in pro play, and Omen's role wasn't supposed to be stalling
      - Raze was and still is the best duelist in the game, and the satchels are the reason for that
      - Jett was the best duelist in the game at the time of her nerfs and her smokes had a combined duration of 9 seconds at the time which made them too good
      - Viper had a 80% pick rate in pro play prior to her nerfs, and the mollies prior to the nerf provided her with too much stall potential, on top of her having a very powerful kit in pro play

      Start buffing agents instead of keep nerfing even power creeping with new agents work better than the current state of releasing boring agents which rely on aim like iso not beein really played in pro play

      The problem in Valorant is that some of the agents will never be truly bad picks unless a new agent powercreeps them: Jett, Raze, Viper, Cypher and Killjoy will always be good because they fulfill a niche that will always be needed, and unless a new agent is added that fulfills a similar niche better they will always be good.

Shit like the Neon that just got nerfed should never exist in a tac shooter, ever.

    Valorant needs 5 pct more power creep. Start by buffing fade and giving Skye her third flash back and giving dog a 2pct buff. Revert the stupid kayo pull out timing nerfs. Make vyses wall last an extra 2 seconds. And just go down the line with buffs like that. LET VIPER PICK HER ORB BACK UP. Like this stuff isn’t rocket science. Most of it is QOL improvements at a base level. It is not a fun experience trying to prowler someone or pull out a kayo flash and getting shot because you’re face rolling your kb trying to get your gun back out waiting on an animation. And if im really feeling froggy? Shorten the pull out animation on Jett after her dash. While we’re at it rework cloves mettle entirely and buff the pull out animation timing. You want to know why agents like neon and raze and iso and yoru are so abusive? Phx included? CAUSE THEYRE BLODDY ON TOP OF YOU W FULL UTILITY IN .25 seconds while you’re playing a controller or an intitutor and you can’t counter util cause by the time you get your utility off your gun won’t be back out and you’ll be dead.

    • @pjjustice5014
      @pjjustice5014 18 днів тому

      That's the problem. They usually nerf what's annoying, but not what's overpowered. Raze/Jett still held the higher winrate across all ladders compared to Neon at her peak- but since she's 'annoying to play against', they decided to nerf her to the ground and nudge the game back to its default dive meta. Because people are so used to playing & playing against the old roster of agents, any new mechanics introduced to the game that directly compete with what's already established just feels 'game-breaking' (ie, shields, run and gun). So realistically, any new agent with a new mechanic cannot rise to the same power level as the old agents- simply because people will perceive them as 'threat' to what they say the "core principles of the game", which really only is the play pattern they're used to and they regurgitate over and over. "Agents like x should not exist in a tac shooter ever."- bs like this is what primarily makes the game stale and those saying these have no right to complain.

    I dont think the situation is coming from a fear perspective but from the fact that valorant is a tac shooter. A players interest in tac shooters in my opinion tends to rely more on a players level of play rather than utils agents have. For instance, neon had a very unique and strong ability until she got nerfed but those utils that she had broke the tac shooter experience thus led to a nerf. I think its really hard to come up with an agent that is strong but does not fiddle with the part that valorant is a tac shooter, because if its too strong it might break the fact that valorant is a tac shooter and you might as well sit back and just throw util and not shoot at all. As for other types of games this might be a little bit more loose because its not a one shot in the head or the skill mastery is more important than just shooting heads in general.
    Theres another reason why its hard and that is the original agents having multiple good utils in their kit like raze having damage, scouting and entry skills all in her normal kit. They need to rework some of those original agents and split the utils viability more precisely so the upcoming agents can have room of success of overtaking the allrounder skills that some agents has
