The problem with fighting guys like Khabib/Islam is that you can’t catch up to a lifetime of grappling with just a couple training camps focusing on it.
Not only a lifetime of grappling but surrounded by elite grapplers. That part of the world has top notch judo as well.

I fell asleep during Strickland-Costa and woke up during the second round of the main event. It's tough to stay awake so late for these events sometimes, especially when the fights aren't riveting.

Unfortunately Islam is that much better, as a man and as a strategic fighter. His dedication to the sport deserves huge respect. How much he thinks, trains with discipline and and has the presence of mind to execute and/or modify his strategy in the cage, ITS PHENOMENAL, and a testament to the living legend that he already is. Huge HUGE shout out to Luke Thomas, who's outstanding honesty and simplicity in his assessment and breaking down of, not just the physical fight, but the thought processes and mentalities of the fighters and their trainers, before, during, and after the fights. Islam didn’t do shit other than outpoint Volk with meaningless strikes and some grappling that didn’t hurt Volk in any way. Islam was the one who’s face was battered after the fight, he’s the one who “looked” like he was beat up. & if the time didn’t run out, Islam likely would have ended up completely gassed out and ultimately finished

Rico at the end says "It felt like where Islam is skillwise and where the top of the division is closing". That gap is not closing because he is dominating these guys (Charles, DP, clear win over Arman, etc.) and because most of the guys in the top 6 are getting old now. And the guys in the bottom of the division aren't half of what the guys at the top are.

Is it crazy to say that Paulo Costa may be losing the passion to fight/pursue an MMA career?
When i started sparring i used to always pull my pants up the same way Dustin does with his shorts. I just didn't like the way they sat on my hips, like they'd snag slightly if i threw mid to high kicks. Had that habit all through my teenage years.
He was doing it while in range. Dangerous. I’ve seen boxers exploit similar patterns. I guess in MMA it’s harder to time??

I think in MMA you can always eat a knee up the middle if you rush in, even if that isn't a major weapon for Dustin. Could also just be general respect for his power and striking defense.

Just an absolutely incredible fight to witness. I feel privileged to have seen it. I don't want Dustin to call it a day, but, if I'm honest, I think I'm just being selfish as a fan. Actually, I'm glad Dustin lost. This is the best way his career could have ended. This is the perfect ending to a combat sports career-which is a rare thing that we get to say.

Islam is not khabib in the grappling department much like khabib is not like Islam in the striking. Islam is the more complete fighter but khabib is by far the better more dominant skilled grappler. So much so that he was able to get away with being almost one dimensional. (Yes I know khabib was developing his other skills later on in his career)

Still..this fight showed that the 2nd belt was too ambituous for Islam. He looked a bit tired and sloppy. Some takedown attempts looked desperate.
