World of Tanks - How To Not Suck

- I've been threatening to do this for a while, and here it is. The first in what will hopefully be a series of videos for newcomers to World of Tanks (and veteran players for whom the obvious needs pointing out). Starting off with the real basics - angling your armour, visibility and camoflage. This is how to not suck.

Hi I am 46 and from NZ I have been watching my boy play wot I then decided to give it a go. Well now I'm bloody hooked great game just wish the young ones would give us oldies a chance our reflexes are a bit slow lol
I'm 42, it's hard to be consistent after all that alcohol and drug-related brain damage.
Tired of being flamed by all these high-stat kids. We should have our own status. Leave us alone - we're old and trying our best! I shine my two Kolobanov medals every day, but the young uns only look at WN8 !
I'm hearing ya
Nautilus1972 isnt there a button to close chat? ı am 18 but ı dont care what any1 thinks about anything, you wont even see him again in like 10.000 battles...
***** in a row its more likely. But there is like 100000,150000 online most of the time. Just wanted to say that he is a random person who knows nothing about you. Dont care just have fun ^^
***** oh ım sorry then :) its happy fun times in eu :P
At 6:39, you mention that Fritz earns 50% of Ivan's damage done. It might be usefull to know that if Fritz's brother Heinz is also spotting the enemy tank, each only gets 25% (it's shared amonst all spotters). Also, since Ivan doesn't spot the tank himself, he gets less xp and credits. Even less if the target is beyond 300m. (This is why arties get such poor exp and credits.)
I only recently discovered this. My Hummel is my worse tank with both win/loss ratio and money making. I stopped playing it... except on x5 weekends or something.
+SeedlingNL And this is why it pays to buy the best radio from the tech tree even if it seems too expensive. Relay spotting can work over really long distances if both you and the guy you are relaying to have long radio ranges. You might think a tier VIII radio is too expensive for a tier IV scout tank, but if the big guns on your team are all far away, you can still show them where the enemy is because of your outrageous radio range. Your arty's will be smashing them and they won't understand how they are even being seen.
I've just installed XVM. I've noticed so far that 'good' players are not in fact 'team'players. Often hanging back in obscurity, or not bothering to stop a cap in progress if it looks like they'll get killed.
WN farming by damage..
Oddly, when I meet purples in platoon they are always in the enemy and the team is essentially them :/
COD04MW I played on a team at the w/end that had two purple XX unicums. How rare is that? Again they weren't really part of the them, just stalking prey ....
Nautilus1972 and that is why i dont care about stats or any of that bullshit. stats dont reflect your ability to play the game when taking your team into consideration, you just farm a especific thing(kills) to get ahead of everyone else, just so that the community doesn't harass you. And by that, you couldnt care less about teamplay or objectives at all. i give you one example, being one of the few guys that actually wants to defend a especific area in order to get more map control (in where most of your team didnt care about it), you end up being killed and sacrificing yourself for the team, so that the other guys get all the xp and money, and they get called "heroes" while you are just "another player". And that goes to most of the streamers out there with amazing stats. they just farm stuff with APCR (2 gud 4 u), not caring about objectives or the team itself. just a point of view.
Rúben Manteigas True, I've been killed many many times defending some other player, or defending the base, but then you never see anyone actually do that, and I'm not very good at this game either.
Many thx for this as I'm just getting started playing WoT. It was yours and SideStrafe's postings that got me interested in playing games again after nearly 15 years since I last played anything. Coming from my very, very early times of playing Avalon Hill and SPI board war games in the 70's and 80's, WoT has been a fun experience.
Hope to see a tank driving skills video soon.
Can we see more videos like this
я посоветовал бы глянуть видео на моем канале если хочешь приобрести прем танк
Isn't that what everyone says when they get killed? Hacks? LOL.
Though I'm pretty sure one game I played they were hackers because when it's 2 seconds into the game, your team hasn't even had a chance to move off the base and you start taking hits and lose 25% of your team in under 20 seconds then you know something isn't right.
Very helpful video Jingles. :)
Ghost12973N Friendly fire, pretty normal on wot
+Ghost12973N Sometimes arty gets lucky taking blind shots into the enemy base as soon as the game starts because they know a lot of you will still be clustered around there, especially if you don't move very fast.
how to be good 1) grind Russian heavy line 2) get an Is-3 3) use ur OP af armour to rush enemy's at an ok pass 4) laugh when u bounce ou absorb enemies shells while they scratch ur pain
paint*
The IS-3 is not op.
+Bob Racia please explain how it isn't op? I think it's the only tank I can't auto aim on and poke hills
+JacobFallsAlotBMX do you have IS-3 cause I do. The armor is ok but everything at its tier can penetrate it frontally. The first gun has horrible pen very bad dispersion and bad accuracy.
+JacobFallsAlotBMX and its depression is horrible as well, just like almost every russian tank.
In reality that 50 120 could drive towards where he was taking hits and slaughter both tanks.
In reality, good 50 120 drivers wouldn't be standing in the middle of that field. And in reality, lots of players are god awful beyond the stretch of my imagination. I can see how lots of idiots would just stay still and complain about the invisible enemy. =P
"When i grow up im going to be a luchs!" Lol wut?
yeah, the tier 4 tank that you get from the pz 1 c is the luchs
Anthony Zhang
luchs is my love, i still ahve it :3
Same here, it's freakin' amazing tank
A definite must watch for Beginners to World of Tanks, and a funny one too.
Looking forward for the next video in your tutorial series, hopefully it'll have something more complicated and helpful for those aspiring to be pros. Great work!
I need a "War Thunder - How To Not Suck" video because far as I can tell the two games couldn't be much more different.
If youre a good Player in WoT you wont have Problems in WarThunder if you play it some times.
***** no, its totally different. A good WoT player will get his ass kicked in war thunder. What arcamean said is actually a good idea.
Well, one could have flying ponies in it, oh wait.......
Thats not true. I am an good player in WoT, my stats are not bad there. I knew directly how to not suck in Warthunder. The most player there are these WoT-Kiddys who want to play the big bad germans. They think because Warthunder is realistic, they will kill easly everthing with german tanks. Its easyier to kill them in WT thant in WoT.
Thats true, Warthunder is very different but the basics are the same. I am not a bad player in WoT and Warthunder.
You just have to be more carefully there and you will camp with TD´s and heavy tanks more times than in WoT. If you have the same tactic-feeling than in WoT, you will get very much kills. Of course i suck somethimes in WT. But that does every player in every game.
Just play smart, know your tank and the enemy tanks and think before you take action. ~like in WoT
Thanks for this Jingles, I've shared this with some mates who didn't know about angling, and now we all know how to use that sodding Leopard.
The spotting mechanics of this game are fail at best. I just left a match where a kv1 killed the tank in front of me and rolled right up to be and neither of us spotted him until he was 15 feet in front of me! The other vehicle did not see him period! No reason it should have happened at all! There was no cover for the kv1 at all. To even get to us he would have had to cross a very large open area!
That should not happen, but happens more and more lately, something is going on!
Was not even the weirdest thing that happened in that match!
then what was weirdest
OMG HAXXORZ
The game has always been fail at best.
what tank exactly were you using?
Didn't happen. Tanks get within 50 meters and it's instant spot no matter what. 15 feet? Cry more n00b!
Note that once Fritz stopped shooting, he "disappeared" again after five seconds.
i like the part that 'fritz'(PZ1C) says; when i grow up, i am oing to be a luchs!
lol
Different for every tank you drive, depends entirely on their armour thickness and slope. Some tanks have terrible side armour and you never want to be showing that much of their side off.
No American tanks were harmed.... Classic
Wooot? In latest Migles with Jingles you said that some people at tier IX and X don't know this stuff. I expected to learn something, and it turns these are bloody basics! I knew all that when I was at tier IV! I must admit, I'm truly amazed.
No American tanks even starred in this video. Of course they were not harmed.
Wargaming should include this in their tutorial. Hopefully people will learn from this much needed tutorial! Great work Jingles & Co! /Warferret, EU
WOT players, listen up. When a couple of Heavies radio to "FOLLOW ME," fucking FOLLOW THEM, GODDAMNIT!!!! Too many gamers don't realize that in certain situations it is best to go as a PACK with every kind of tank and tank killer and overwhelm any enemy you come up on with overwhelming, withering firepower. Me and my fellow heavy got trapped fighting it out alone because we had no back-up. Now, DAMNIT, START USING YOUR FUCKING HEADS and treat these games as a chess match.
+Pete Mangum That's a good way to get outflanked and die when everyone goes the same way at the beginning of the match.
Joe Snow Not if you have a couple of tanks guarding your flanks.
+Pete Mangum Yeah, good luck making that happen.
K then
and that's why we lose
It's because you have two things in front of you, the second bush completely blocks line of sight, greatly reducing view range beyond 50m. This means that it was a team-mate spotting that tank, not you, so if the team-mate broke line-of-sight with it then you would no longer be given the tanks position by the team-mate and the tank would disappear.
If you are getting hit by tanks whilst behind a bush it may be due to your tank having a poor camo rating or being spotted by a flanking enemy scout.
so if you shot through a bush 15m away you wont be spotted?
Jay Berry yep
Jay Berry
i think its more than 5 meters away, or 15 feet, really when the bush isnt transparent anymore
+Jay Berry WoT youtube has a really good camo mechanics video on their page, you should check it out.
+Jay Berry
This guy is FULL OF SHIT.
First of all, even if you "angle your armor," experienced
players know to shoot you in the tracks and side. If you have a tank with average to lower
armor, you're going to go up in flames.
Secondly, a LOT of times it doesn't matter what your
reticle's color is. I had the reticle on
several of my tanks show RED, and the shot did NOTHING (with the voice saying
"we only dinged them" or "we didn't penetrate them." It bounces, or simply hits the tank and does
no damage. About the only thing you can
count on is that if you try shooting before your round 'ready to fire' reticle
is not completely focused in, there is no telling where your shot will go even
if you're aiming directly at the tank.
And, I've got 'Dead Eye' on one of my tanks that is supposed
to give you some indication on where to shoot a tank whose armor has been
compromised by several hits. I have YET
to figure out what I'm looking for and cannot discern any difference at
all. Also, RELOAD time is critical. A slow reload is DEADLY in this game, AND
slow reloads are endemic on LARGE caliber guns.
And large caliber guns are usually on LARGE, LUMBERING tanks which can't
maneuver well. I play my T-29 like a
sniper. I have good camo, long range
finder, and 'Muffled Shot' which is SUPPOSED to keep you hidden after you've
fired off a round and NOT expose where you are (though I wonder sometimes if
even that is working like it should). If
faster medium tanks come at you in a T29, you're dead meat. Even with a 105mm, you're going to have
almost an 11 second load time, and that's 11 seconds two or three mediums can
pump rounds into you. So, take my
advice, get as far away from the action as you can, and fire long distance
shots. Let the light and mediums spar
all they want.
I also see guys with "ventilator" fans in their
equipment list, but for the life of me I never experienced any benefit from
them. So, I don't use them. A RELOADER and LATHE is your best friend
because reloading the acquiring your target FAST is the key. Forget about maneuvering. Once you get into higher tiers your opponents
are too good to let a running tank fuck them up. You run, you get nailed. And, if you are unfortunate to run up against
one of these fucking 'WALLET WARRIORS' who have enough loot buy PREMIUM GOLD
AMMO, it won't matter WHAT you're in or what you do. They will penetrate your tank in just a few
shots (if not but ONE).
So, my advice is to NOT LISTEN to these supposed
"experts" because they're full of shit. Learn to play your own game.
holly crap pete, you know nothing about this game
I just hope those newbies in the game who are in light tanks in higher tier games who ask "what am I doing in this tier (6, 7+) will take notice of this video and actually learn what spotting means i.e. spotting and DAMN not shooting and dying. Awesome video with healthy dose of humour Jingles. Cheers mate.
Im currently stuck with the m3 lee (shit turret) when i rlly want to get a sherman, shall i use up my precious gold coins or shall i wait it out? i estimate it will take 74 more games to get it.
Depends on how much gold you have, but it's good to wait it out.
I only have 350 free gold
myMelted Mind what a noob grind it idiot :D
I'd recommend using the gold for more useful things such as things that ONLY accept gold in order to get. If you're unwilling to pay money, use your gold cautiously because who knows when you'll get more?
lol... my brother have 4 tier 10 tanks and he never used money to wot... i played wot 2 months now and im on amx 13 90 and i am not playing active so..
Really good and long-needed vid, my man.
I've played nearly 9000 battles and I'm a decent player and never knew about the reticle. I guess you learn something every day.
No. You calculate it like this: Aeff = A / cos(a)
Where "A" is the armor thickness, "Aeff" is the effective (angled) armor thickness, and "a" is the angle.
So if you want to double your effective armor, you need a 60 degree angle or slope.
You shouldn't be allowed to drive a light tank higher than tier 3 in this game until you've been sat down and made to watch that video.
And they never seem to happen unless you're on full health, and you only need one more shot to kill him. Then... "Ding! Ding! Ding! We're finished, let's get outta here!" :p
About that camoflage thing - you forgot to mention that light tanks don't get any penalties to camoflage when moving. Frits could run circles behind that bush and it won't make any difference to him standing still.
Well, if you are 15 meters away from the bush, you will ruin your own camo rating (It will go down to 15%), but if the enemy is far enough away, the bush's camo rating will still hide you. If you are less than 15 meters away, you will be down to 15% of your camo rating and the bush will be out of play for a bit.
However, you can still be spottet if you're behind the bush (Closer or further than 15 meters) without shooting, depending on your camo rating and the enemies view rangeanddistancetoyou.
This is one the most entertaining videos I have seen from you!!! So funny and educational!
Basic sound advice. I loved the comedic asides and wonder is there anymore wit of this calibre in any of your other posts? I'll just have to watch them all.
Nice man! One thing that you really need to cover though, it cover! The type that stops shells.
Do what the Fritz did basically, spot for the other tanks, take shots only when every one else is reloading or distracted, don't shoot at frontal armor, try to flank them. Keep moving or in cover.
Jingles, as a new player, I really liked this video and especially like the parts in your other videos where you point out the weak spots on tanks. Is there any chance you could do some videos where you point out how best to utilize the different tank classes (light/med/hvy/TDs) on each map. For example pointing out good TD spots or where heavy tanks should go and mistakes that noobs make on the maps? I feel like some games I get into a map and have no idea where to go.
Jingles! Re-do this video and get the series going right!
Non Disclosure Agreement, we're not allowed to talk about what we've seen or show any gameplay.
Nice video, a nice reminder for everyone with a good injection of humor. (and brand new information to probably far to many ^^) keep up the good work fella!
Loved it. I'm a relatively decent player and i'd be lying if I said I didn't learn anything. Thanks for the great vids in general, can't wait to see some more Noob Tank Theatre.
Well, I suppose my description of the hint was badly written.
So again. To spot an enemy on the battlefield while you a standing behind bushes, you need to get closer to the bush as long as the bush became transparent. That is known by everynoob. But if you'd like to stand unspotted while attacking the enemy, you just need to roll back so far as the bushes became visible again in you sniper scope vision. Then if you fire, you won't be spotted.
Awesome video, very nice job mr. Jingles. Keep up the good work mate
You need to do a New "How not to suck" series!
Ok, great video, very well made, educational and funny. I only have one gripe, when you were demonstrating the angling the armour with the Tiger, approximately the same amount of shots penetrated before the angling as after, somewhere between 1in 2 to 1 in 3 - this didnt really illustrate the point all that well.
I lol'd so much at "Vorsprung durch Technik"! :D Mighty Jingles is awesome :D
No. your referring to the wiggle dance. That actually doesn't stop people from penning you. I would need to show you what sidescraping is, i wouldn't know how to word it. Sorry.
Things like sidescraping will be the topic of a future video.
Ivan has concealment (a bush) directly between him and Frenchy that is at least 15m away from Ivan.
I love that Black Adder refference.
I've heard him do a german accent and it sounds spot on to me, he sounds just like Ade Edmondson in blackadder so what more could you want.
very good video for new players keep up great work jingles
sounds good :) although i don't need videos like that anymore, it's still kinda entertaining and fun to watch, just like most of your WoT videos. keep it up! ;-) btw: do you play arty? i always wondered how it's like and started yesterday. driving normal tanks is better by a mile, but arty can be a nice diversion once in a while.
Thank you for the WoT tutorial! The humorous aspects help.
Copying and pasting an earlier answer to the same question here:
What's happening in most cases is you ARE penetrating, but what you're penetrating is just spaced armour. The shot's not going through the hull armour on the other side because it doesn't have enough energy left, so - no damage.
or
Your shot penetrates, hits a module, destroys or damages the module, doesn't have enough energy left to do anything else, so, no obvious damage.
Frustrating even when you know what's happening.

Very good video, may have been a bit unusual but I think a bit of change can always improve things.
There was one thing you didn't address though:
Today I ran across this (friendly, annoyingly) IS-8 driver who thought angling the tank would make the armour more effective...
Needless to say his 120 mm hull armour was basically useless and he was raging for the entire game about hacking enemy tanks.
So: perhaps something on angling for tanks like the IS3 and IS8? Its badly needed :/
Well they do say that misery loves company! Believe it or not, some of my videos do show machines that aren't fully upgraded, I still haven't fully researched the AMX 48, I've got M6, M103, T28 Prototype etc videos where I'm doing the stock grind, too. I try to make a point of covering the upgrade paths of each tank in my video reviews, too.
Relax, he was just getting into the spirit of the video. ;)
Definitely! There are, for want of a better description, "visibility points" all over your tank, and enemy tanks have a number of "observation points" in certain places. A clear line of sight between any of the two and you get spotted. That bush has to cover your whole tank from view.
The no idea where to go is easily solved by thinking which path will give you a chance of surviving. And for each tank type there is different types of roles. Like lights may be good at flanking or Tank Destroyers would be good pinning down a road from incoming enemies. Just go think towards victory.
So far it looks like 20 trolls who got blocked for being offensive dickwads have made fake accounts to add downvotes. If they all make another 10 fake accounts each and do it again we might begin seeing that red bar.
Troll fail! Try harder! :p
Sidescraping is driving into a corner, then turning and reversing away from it to show as little of your front as possible and your side at a very steep angle. Perfect for tanks with rear mounted turrets. A video will be coming showing how it works.
The only direction I gave them was "Park here, move there. Now shoot a burst at me. Okay, now wait.... now the IS start shooting. Ok try shooting AP instead, dumbass..." Everything else I made up in the edit. ;)
Never trust anyone in a random battle to do anything even remotely sensible. Always expect them to do the worst possible thing in any given situation, so that when they do, you're ready for it. Platoons for the WIN!
What happened is wargaming did some research with the History Channel and found out that during the setting of World of tanks in that era aliens shared there technology of "space" armour that consists of black holes between an outer plate of armour and another piece of armour some say the shells exit the black holes in another battle through the portals that are carried in SPGs.
I mean don't get me wrong. Your tips are great, videos too, but I really feel that some games where you play stock version tanks should be included and be a lot of help, at least to have some sort of reference on what to do. Many tanks are totally different when they are stock version and when they are with full upgrades.
Great vid, love your sense of humor.
I love all of the little comments. Very funny! I love it!
Damn, and it was all going so well up until the part where you claimed you learned something.
Should teach people how to sidescrap. It's much more effective than sitting perfectly still at an angle allowing good players to hit anyweak spot they please and pen anyways.
The legend says its possible... But its only a legend.
Thanks so much for making this video! This will help me a lot in the game! Once again thank you!
its on the tanks wki. generally speaking, when the angle is at 45 to the shot, its effectively doubling the armor value.
5:07 "vorsprung durch technik!" got me laughing my ass of, so random, thats the line Audi uses in its commercials :D
More than 5m and the bush becomes opaque for you, but they'll still see you if you fire.
They're just lucky I let them use it. Don't they know who I am? I AM THE MIGHTY JINGLES! ;)
That music was so much better than the one now
i hope this goes viral....
Tiger was a better tank than the T-34, but when there were only 2000 Tigers and over 40,000 T-34 made in WW2 the Tiger didn't stand a chance.
haha this was the best and funiest film you ever done.
It's based off of real-life armor characteristics. Why do you think most tanks by the end of WWII had sloping armor? And do you really think sloped armor & angling your tank are much different?
You should have it, it's part of the game introduced a patch or two ago.
Feel free, but I've put it in the NA Newcomer forum myself. ;)
Dat "realistic bomb damage". Now all we need to wait for is the patch to ACTUALLY be released.
Very funny and very useful id, Jingles. Mind if I put it on the NA forums as well?
Just one thing - you mention twice that Ivan can see through the bushes because he's within 5m, but its actually 15m. :)
It assuredly wasn't superior to the Tiger, but the strength in it was ramming to disable higher threats with an easily mass produced tank like the T-34. To me it's an iconic and awesome machine, but it isn't unstoppable, far from it. This guy obviously had no idea what he was talking about so I wouldn't have even responded to him.
I have actually put it on the EU WOT Newcomers forums. ;)
While I much appreciate the content this video provides, I have to agree that the presentation is rather unappealing. The same video would also have been quite a bit shorter (not that it was overly long) if you had narrated it, as text speed isn't limited to the reading speed of the slowest expected reader. It would've just been more to the point I feel.
In any case, I do hope you continue this as a series, bringing knowledge of the mechanics of the game to more people. In whatever form!
I also thought about this one. Which right now seems the most logical answer to me. But 3 penetrating hits not being registered? I swear, I felt so much anger at that moment I coulda tore my desk in half. Good thing I was listening to the Dark Side of the Moon lol.
"When I grow up Im gonna be a Luchs" I lost it
I am glad he assured us that not American tanks were harmed in making this video. They have such soft tender hulls. I hope he has a video on how to hull down like an American tank.
hilarious vid mate!
Another well-done video. Btw, that Pz will have to eat like a boss and chew like hell in order to grow up like a Luchs :D
and the tigers gun is also more precise and aims faster .... so if you're a duo of Tiger and IS the IS should go to the front cover and block the enemies so that the tiger can stand a lil more in the back and support him..
Ah so thats how it works...demonstrates the unseen killer brilliantly, and the 'why isn't he shooting back' and/or 'why is his turret facing away from me' as I kill him :)
You haven't seen the last of little Fritz!
Dear mighty Jingles, could you please do tips and tricks videos, and show your tactics in maps please, thank you.
Lol dammit this video is old... XD But did you just start your youtube career 2013? Kinda felt like it was longer ago...
*****
I just know him since he started his UA-cam Career and I thought I was much younger when I started to watch his videos. Is it only 3 years? I feel like I know him for longer.^^
He is a really nice kind of person... and has a very chilling voice... Maybe that's it!
These were clearly Napoleonic Wars tanks.
