To Clemson's credit, their offensive line was AMAZING. Bama never got any type of pass rush on Lawrence. Bama actually ran the ball much better than I thought they would. I know I'm going to sound like a big time Bama homer, but this wasn't a case of Clemson being a "superior" team to Alabama. Yes, Clemson was better, and yes, Clemson is an elite program. And yes, even if Bama punches it in at the beginning of the 2nd quarter for 6 instead of 3, they still may lose. However, If they would have made it 20-14, I think the game would have been one of those "who has the ball last" deals like the 2016 CFP championship. The game spiraled out of control big time for Bama with the errors starting with the missed PAT, the false start on 2nd and goal from the 1 yard line, settling for a FG to make it 16-14, and Tua's second pick of the game. I could live with Tua's first pick because Clemson just executed perfectly and baited him into that throw. The second interception was a HORRIBLE throw into triple coverage. After this sequence, Bama lost their poise and a great team like Clemson ate them alive.
For all the hype about how lopsided the final score is, Bama actually has many highlights here. They moved the ball practically at will - 23 first downs and 443 yards. They just didn't finish drives. Over and over they came up empty deep in Clemson territory. I still think Clemson would have won absent the turnovers, because they proved all night that Bama's secondary couldn't even slow down their passing attack. It got so bad that you had a couple guys in the secondary for Bama who just quit trying (in one instance very obviously), which was the most frustrating part for me. Still, without the late drive collapses it would have been a shootout similar to 2015 & 2016. Instead, the only shooting Bama did was into its own foot.
This game was so bad bc of how bad our secondary was. All season it kept showing us it was not on a high level and we kept ignoring it bc of how good our offense was
