And that's a simple way of explaining it, but of course, there's a lot more to it than that. PROs are advocates for songwriters and have deep ties to the music industry as a whole, so understanding their function will definitely help the musician life. Logan Crockett from Full Circle Music (VP or Marketing) will help unveil what really happens with PROs like ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC.

I am a guitarist, 19 yrs. and of now , I create songs ! My definition of a song writer is one who lyrically writes lyrics ! This I don't do , I create and complete songs ! So my question is , does a person as myself,at some point need to connect with P.R.O or at what point ,do I need to connect with a P.R.O. ??

You are a guitarist, you probably wrote guitar notes on a piece of paper that made up an entire song. In this instance, you are definitely a song writer. Now guitar notes by themselves will probably not be an instant hit, but if you add in some drums, a few more stings, percussion, and vocals, now you might have created a timeless masterpiece. Maybe other artist, and musicians were involved, now you need to decide who gets what (split the royalties). Once you have a finished and polished product, then you can register with an admin publishing company, and a PRO. For a percentage and registration fee they will work together to collect royalties on your behalf where ever your song is played around the world. There is much more to it than this, but this should point you in the right direction.
