  • Day in the life of a plumber. In todays video I have the job of connecting up a new kitchen sink and install some new designer vertical radiators. This was a day where everything went wrong from parts missing, faulty products and by the end of the day, I felt like giving up! This just goes to show that not everything is plain sailing in this trade.

Honest video Tom. I've been down that road many times with materials. Now days I get the customers to buy what they want directly, and any issues they can deal with it. Best decision I ever made 👍

Exactly what I used to do when I was working for myself
More often than not they’d turn a blind eye to less serious and less obvious defects when they’d sourced the products themselves because they didn’t want to waste their time getting things replaced
But they were less forgiving where I’d supplied the goods and anything that was less than perfect had to be changed immediately

Last time i fitted those radiators they sat on feet so i never had this issue of it sliding down but the problem with designer radiators in general is that they do require more time to fit, they have specific bracket points so if the wall is out which most walls are then it throws the rad out or puts stress on the brackets, basically if your customer is looking for an immaculate look then you better be telling them that their whole property should be perfect first or be prepared to compromise..
Btw its always handy to have a little stock of extra long basket waste bolts you can get them separately in places.
The short sink waste kit i would chuck in the bin and fit 2 separate p traps.. looks neater and takes up less room

Thanks for the support mate, these brackets were rubbish, I think they should have been supplied with feet. I need to pick up some longer bolts, I also agree two p traps do look better than these bowl and a half kits

I feel your pain Tom. As a kitchen fitter in a previous life, first thing I did with a Howdens kitchen was chuck the waste kit in the bin and go buy my own, even when they fit in my experience they often leak. You’re right though, when you’re spending that much cash it shouldn’t be that way. On the Belfast sink, I opted to change the flexi tails to longer ones to fix the access issue.

It's not the problem but the way it's resolved that's important. In this case it's unlikely that you'll use those radiators again and certainly wouldn't recommend them but they'll probably redesign the brackets if they get enough complaints and you're the one who loses in the whole deal.
Try taking out the foam at the top and replacing it with thicker, grippier rubber? It may help. The rest is just good old Howdens😂.
    Happy new year Tom.

WHAT THE ***KING HELL IS GOING ON!!! That's what I'd have said!
If the customer supplied the sink fittings, then It's down to them to chase the missing parts...surely? You should charge for time wasted.
But, the massive question here is.... how can you bend a radiator? 45 years in the building trade and I have never heard of such a thing.
I had to check the calendar to see if it was April 1st.

They work good and solid but you need to fit tight under top rung to stop rad slipping down and then the bottom ones don’t really matter where fitted as long as secure and look correct. Hi Tom lad. Don’t touch that rad again. It should have been delivered on its own pallet stating it was straight as an arrow in big bold print.
Tom tell that company to send out their on the road rep to sort the issue themselves.
There is a nice threaded rod and bracket design that could pull it into place in the middle maybe! The middle bracket helped with the floor standing type rad not falling over. Plus not very obvious and looked well. But let their rep do it after that email you got I’m sure he has plenty of the middle brackets in his van. That should sort their s##te talk.
    Happy new year💪

if a radiator MADE OF METAL bends just by carrying it, the manufacture should be ashamed for using cheap, thin, chynese pot "metal". i agree whole heartedly about these "designers" and manufactures trying to reinvent the wheel. theres rads still working after 100+ yrs and these new rads will be lucky to see 20 yrs because theyre crap. it seems alot of things made/manufactured in the last 4 yrs is pure garbage.
ive seen videos of carpenters getting plywood were the sheets are coming apart. its plywood ffs! apparently they found a way to screw that up too. i think now would be the time for small businesses to to start up and making things locally to put a pinch on the big, soulless corporate manufactures. after all, the only reason they exist is because of our wallets. imagine if we opened our wallets up to local manufactures instead.
    something has to change.

Tom, from 23:28 onwards i can see what looks like a metal reinforcing below where you fitted the bottom bracket. Do they also have those at the top? If they do, is it possible that you might need to fit the top brackets snuggly underneath them? Which would remove their ability to slide down?
