I didn't realize that The Oscar Peterson Trio + One Clark Terry was the 1st time he recorded Mumbles. I had the album. I was invited to go to his house in Bayside, Queens by some friends. I took the album with me and asked Clark to autograph it for me. Of course he was very gracious and put a personalized autograph and drew a picture of a trumpet underneath it. Used to see him play at the Half Note in Manhattan. He was a real treat!
Yes this is a good story told hilariously, but it also highlights the magnificent brilliance of Clark Terry and OP, as well as the awesome power of music to transcend language and meaning. Listening to performances of the song MUMBLES elsewhere on youtube, it is almost impossible not to love the way Mr. Terry has so much respect for what he is creating, while also having a silly good time.
