- In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - On Sunday November 28th, 2004 Clark Terry gifted us with the third Master Class in the 2004 fall series offered in conjunction with John Snyder of Artists House Foundation and David Schroeder of NYU. Clark Terry, a legend jazz trumpeter is known as a headliner at the world's premier jazz events, a TV personality featured on national programs and one of jazz's finest educators. In 1951 Clark joined Duke Ellington's orchestra as a featured soloist for eight years. He was also the first black musician on the NBC payroll as a spotlighted player in the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It was at this time Clark had a smash hit featuring Mr. Mumbles. You will see in the Master Class video Clark gives us a very amusing segment of Mr. Mumbles. Clark is known for his great technical virtuosity, swinging lyricism and his gift as a wonderful dramatist whose musical talent leaves an audience thoroughly delighted.
Clark Terry didn’t just make the music better, he made the world better. Rest easy, you’ve earned it.
As soon as he plays just one note you know it's Clark Terry, he's a fantastic person and musician one of the last greatest!
God bless you dear CT!!! many blessings!!!
I met the wonderful Clark Terry under the most unfortunate of circumstances. My dad, a jazz drummer, took me to the funeral of the great vibes player/pianist Eddie Costa whose life was tragically cut short in 1962 in an auto accident. My dad introduced me to Clark after the funeral and he was the warmest, kindest person I ever met. I'm an old guy now and I play drums to just about every album Clark ever cut. God Bless CT!
RIP Mr. Terry. You left behind a legacy. Not only were you an amazing musician, you also devoted a left time to teaching others this wonderful music. Peace and love.
This guys forgotten more great jazz licks than I'll ever know! Aint no substitution for experience.
One of many legendary jazz guys that spent a lifetime teaching clinics and classes to younger musicians to pass the torch.
I remember, the Wichita Jazz fest over 40 years ago, explaining circular breathing, which I never mastered. The double and tripling tonguing techniques are still appreciated by the wife. 😳
I miss this man more than I miss getting good grades.
Clark Terry. Great musician and great intellect. One of the best. He will be missed.
is there a name for an emotion that is a mix of overwhelming awe and highly amused/entertained? double whammy
Clark Terry - surely one of the all-time greats on that trumpet.
And for sure on the Flugel....!
great on jazz! trumpet is just the way to let that thing out of his spirit.
I bought one of Clark's personal mouthpieces-----it ain't the mouthpiece that makes
you sound like Clark----He's one of a kind----
The Great Clark Terry!
We, the all of us, are ONCE a man; TWICE a child we, the all of us, are!
It's the wee hours of the morning and I'm smiling like an idiot as I watch this video. How can you not smile at this video and a man who has a love of music and the universe the way he does[here]. He probably schooled The Big Guy on that flat 5,lol. He's always going to be with us in audio and video recordings. Rest in peace, Mr. Mumbles and thanks for the memories.
Hit a fat joint sip your favourite and know you ain't worthy but you are lucky
None other than the Master himself. Mr. Terry , I've always loved your work.
I miss my uncle❤️
❤ maestro Clark Terry
94th birthday- Dec 14, 2014 Mike Vax arranged a birthday bash for CT at Clark's home. Lots of musicians came to pay tribute and blow up a storm. CT gave us a few bars of scat to show he can still swing.
If Clark Terry had played any other instrument, he would have still been a genius with it. What he had was a fascination with the effect he could get by being a little clever. I'm glad he played trumpet but that musical intellect can go anywhere! Also, you can't deny his engaging personality. People just LOVED him!
nobody has ever done clinics like clark's, fun and great learning experiences, miss ya c.t.
Simply amazing to see so much talent cooking like that. Rest well, Clark... thanks for a lifetime devoted to creating beauty, warmth, and friendship....
trumpet650 Nicely expressed. Clark was a great player and character.
John Perks He was a fine man, too...
Clark, you were the greatest of all the wonderfull trumpetplayers of the world. I was happy to meet you in Copenhagen where we made you member of honour in The Danish Trumpet Guild together with Maurice André. To greates in two different worlds, but very much like each other in perfection of your goals. Thank you from all of my heart.

3:05- Clark’s signature inflection in all its joyful beauty…
A wonderful human being and I've never met a finer musician. I got to do a phone interview for a TRUMPET COLLOQUIUM feature I penned for Jazz Times some years ago (along with Ron Miles, Terence Blanchard and Doc Cheatham) and Clark was generous, funny and totally inspiring. I learned more about the trumpet in one half hour with Clark than I have in a lifetime of listening. Hell, I even went out and bought a trumpet. A great man and the Johnny Hodges of the trumpet--total ease and mastery.
One of the greatest ever and lovely guy.
Highly recommend Clark's 'Keep on Keep'in on'. Produced by Quincey Jones. Great documentary about his friendship and mentoring of a young blind, musician
