I absolutely agree! Anyone coming from a layer based system has to understand the Merge node so they can become successful with compositing with Fusion.
I absolutely agree - that is an absolutely ingenious way of explaining how to take layers (of bread etc) and make the whole thing much more easily with nodes.
I had watched this video a year ago and have been using fusion nodes since then. Just came back to like and comment when suddenly this video came up in my recommendation. Out of all the tutorials available, this one's the best and simplest. It's like 1+1=2. Long live Casey Faris !
I have seen multiple nodes videos and this is by far the most intuitive and simplest explanation out there. It's the wild Wild West out there and this seems like a safe haven. Thanks
You're a quality educator, man. A lot of people are good at their craft, some people are even good at teaching it. You clearly excel at both. Much appreciated
Here it is 4 years later and 3,5 upgrades to DR and this video has really helped me as I try and learn DR 18.5. Thanks. I'm going to let this percolate overnight and try and solve my DR problems in the morning.
Casey, you seem to be the foremost UA-cam content creator with respect to DVR. Your videos are excellent. The content is clear and accessible. Your humor is refreshing and engaging. Nodes were very daunting to me, but after watching several of your videos on the topic I feel willing to take a stab at it. Keep it up, and thank you!
Putting nodes into the perspective of it being an "information" based workflow has just helped me a ton with understanding how and why I should do certain things when working with nodes in Davinci. Thanks so much :D
I've been working in FCPX and I have been steering clear of Fusion because of the nodes. This is so great! Wonderfully clear. I think I will migrate to DaVinci. Thanks so much for doing this.
Wow, I had been struggling with the concept of nodes until I found your video! Thank you for this simple explanation, now I look forward to creating with this magical software.
I spend many hours checking videos and voila, I find this one!!! I am done now. Simple, clear, and prove the point. What else. Thank you so much. Understanding how something works its essential. After that is up to you how you mix all.
Thanks Casey. I'm new to any of the video editing program. it so happened that i came across davinci and it's free so i give it a try. As a beginner, it seems to difficult to do till i found your video. You make it look easier. From now on you will be my teacher. God bless you.
Excellent teaching skills. You simplify an initially complex problem, break it down into manageable pieces, so that anyone can understand it. Well done!
This is the best tutorial for beginners out there. I've seen other tutorial but I couldn't grasp or understand what they were doing. I love your bread example to make us understand this. You can be a great teacher with this. Now I know how the nodes are working thanks to your guide. Very much appreciated.
thank you!! just thank you! I've been struggling for a while not knowing if I need to quite the adobe suit, but now, I'm ready to go on the bright side of the VFX world!
Really really helpful! I have been working on a 10 seconds intro video over the past week, I had a lot of struggles with the nodes, trials and errors, somewhere I made it through. Watching this video helps me to clear up the confusion! I would say to other beginners like me out there, just play around the nodes and make some mistakes, then watch this video, it will be less scary.
dude... I have played with this program... much fun... I wanted to get more professional without actually 'being' one and you make that happen!... watched a few tutorials including the Resolves themselves... yours are the best yet...
Severa weeks now I saw some of your video, and then after seeing this and the 3D text, I was convinced to subscribe. Your pedagogy is just outstanding and clear. Thank you so much👍🏼
Hi Casey. Completely new to video editing and of course Resolve is quite intimating, especially the fusion page. Thank you for dumming it down to the point of toasts ! Right after watching the video, I watched another for a more complex fusion project having fire come out of an object in a video and guess what, it was totally understandable every single step made sense. Even thou i was getting hungry thinking about all that nice jam and crunchy bread! You just yourself a new UA-cam stalker!
I had been working on something, messing around for hours and after this video I cleaned it up in about 30 seconds. The effect mask took me awhile to wrap my head around, then you got to it later and it's a game changer
I got that node think right away, but came here to check if I understood it corectly and I'm happy to know now, what to do to get transparency on your nodes :D But I needed just one minut of any Fusion tutorial to see how much better nodes are than layers form After Fx. I came multiple times to the point when I had compositions inside compositions inside compositions and those compositions didn't want to behave like I wanted, because there were too many layers of them. Of course my workflow was for 100% bad in those cases, but here I just don't have to think about it and just connect things. And that point about visibility of effects on your comps is right on spot! It's a hell to find right effects on correct comps and layers if you want to change some minute thing in After...
Casey, I just installed Davinci a couple days ago and have been binging on your videos. You simplify things so much and make a complex program tame . 2 and half minutes into this one, I had to take a break and make myself a sandwich. Thanks! from a future Premier Pro escapee.
@Casey - I am watching your videos out of order - starting with Resolve 16 Crash Course first - and this one is great. In my DayJob I use Visio & other flowchart tools. This lesson is a great way to teach Nodes. Thanks!
Putting the jelly on first like some sort of savage ;-) Thanks for the clear explanations. Love your videos. Wish I could find some clear videos like yours for Cavalry
I was agonizing over why I couldn't get a background to go UNDER the elements I was trying to comp, and this FINALLY got me to understand that the entire issue was the dang colour of the arrows going in and out of the first Merge node! (Also, that multi-output trick is super-nice!)
Que bárbaro mi güero. Muy chido tu tut. Tienes una de las mejores colecciones de videos instruccionales sobre este programa. Ahorita mismo me voy al de "Que hace cada nodo" Saludos desde la mística Xaman Ha
Best ever tutorial on Nodes for beginners. The term "Nodes" is what is scary because it is not clear as to what a node is nor what it does. I think the terms you used, "single step of instructions that are linked together" or "a step in the process of affecting something that are linked together with another single instruction" were better than node. Showing the node above another node is a graphic way of showing layering with the top node affecting things below it . Your illustration made everything abundantly clear, especially the linking variations. I can see that DaVinci is far superior to Photoshop in editing photos. I think I will be using DaVinci in lieu of Photoshop from now on to edit and output photo files. This was great for an image/photo but now I need to learn how to do it for a video. I will be looking for your videos where work with nodes showing them in more than one image or scene in a video.
You Fine Sir are AMAZING. Great use of making a sandwich to make this SUPER EASY TO FOLLOW! Talked about it in pieces, then demo'd it all in practice in the end. Superb Instruction!!!
Thank you, this helped me sooo much!! I couldn't wrap my head around how to reuse the same layer while having it simultaneously be a background and also a foreground.. and boom it turns out you only need to connect its output node to another merge node which acts as a foreground.. wow :D so simple, yet I was going crazy over this :D
Slowly getting the hang of the node system... this pb&j example was genius lol. Would love to see more of these with different effects, etc. Keep inspiring and sharing your wisdom!
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing. I just made an animation in fusion with what I after having seen this video think has about double the nodes it actually needs :)
Great tutorial. You really outdid yourself with this one. Pretty cool how easy it’d be to add jelly “flavors” like strawberry, grape, etc and reuse them in your timeline without a huge ass layer stack.
6h of struggle, then 18 minutes of this video and I am king of the hill. EVERYONE MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO BEFORE START WITH FUSION!
This sandwich analogy is a great, and a rather innovative way to introduce the basic editing principles of Fusion.
I absolutely agree!
Anyone coming from a layer based system has to understand the Merge node so they can become successful with compositing with Fusion.
agreed!
thanks for your confirmation
I absolutely agree - that is an absolutely ingenious way of explaining how to take layers (of bread etc) and make the whole thing much more easily with nodes.

Long live Casey Faris !
I've watch your videos and others and this one just lite the bulb. It's that simple.
You're such an excellent teacher. The sandwhich analogy was super helpful! Thank you so much!
I almost cried from happniess! An analogy is exactly what this gal needed. Thank you!!!
I have seen multiple nodes videos and this is by far the most intuitive and simplest explanation out there. It's the wild Wild West out there and this seems like a safe haven. Thanks
That is super nice! Thank you!!!
You're a quality educator, man. A lot of people are good at their craft, some people are even good at teaching it. You clearly excel at both. Much appreciated
Must see video for those wishing to escape Adobe's subscription extortion.
if only there was a decent equivalent to photoshop/lightroom
@NothingStudios i've not heard much about that. is that a viable alternative?
@@colinmichels3061 I used Affinity and I really liked it, but the thing is if you're used to Photoshop it'll take time to get used to affinity
Haha , cracked Premiere go brr
@@ramasubbusrinivasan2872 Piracy is for scumbags. There are plenty of free alternatives out there if you don't want to pay.
Very well simplified and you also made me want a PBJ sandwich.
Here it is 4 years later and 3,5 upgrades to DR and this video has really helped me as I try and learn DR 18.5. Thanks. I'm going to let this percolate overnight and try and solve my DR problems in the morning.

3 years later this helped me. yes, it's an older version of DaVinci but the point is still evident. Thanks
This was great. The sandwich was a fantastic example. I can see how nodes could eventually really become preferential over layers
I love to see you make node series just explaining what each node is actually doing. That's it. Thanks
I spend many hours checking videos and voila, I find this one!!! I am done now.
Simple, clear, and prove the point. What else. Thank you so much.
Understanding how something works its essential. After that is up to you how you mix all.
Finally I got a good idea what's a Node about. Thanks a million.
Thanks Casey. I'm new to any of the video editing program. it so happened that i came across davinci and it's free so i give it a try. As a beginner, it seems to difficult to do till i found your video. You make it look easier. From now on you will be my teacher. God bless you.

Short. Precise. To the point. Excellent!

Oh my gosh, you have my respect. Love this analogy! I actually use all of these things daily but still watched this video!
thank you!! just thank you!
I've been struggling for a while not knowing if I need to quite the adobe suit, but now, I'm ready to go on the bright side of the VFX world!
I was so afraid of this Nodes! Found the right Video... Thank you tons. This vid needs to get lit!
Definitely less intimidating. Thank you Casey! This helps me realize how much more powerful nodes are compared to layers.
Really really helpful! I have been working on a 10 seconds intro video over the past week, I had a lot of struggles with the nodes, trials and errors, somewhere I made it through. I'm a beginner. I'm just switching from FCX. This tutorial is so simple and well done. Thanks
Thank you so much Casey! This has been the easier form of learning nodes for better understanding.....appreciate you bro
Thank you..... Nodes was so every confusing and you made it so simple to understand..... and you nailed it.
Excellent explanation, I will recommend this video to anyone starting out with Resolve
Severa weeks now I saw some of your video, and then after seeing this and the 3D text, I was convinced to subscribe.
Your pedagogy is just outstanding and clear. Thank you so much👍🏼
I can find words to express how useful and easy this video was . I don't know why UA-cam doesn't put it into to spot of any related serch.
Now THAT is a conceptual understanding of nodes!!! Thanks you very much! That rocked! I subscribed.
Casey, I love your stuff, but the PB&J metaphor is particularly brilliant. I finally got the assembly concept. Thanks.
The best ‘Beginner Guide to Fusion’ I’ve seen! Nice job Casey! Thank you!
Really great explanation. As someone who understands layers from photoshop, once you used layers to explain things, it made it so easy. Excellent.
You are one of the best presenters I have every seen. I love your videos!

Casey, you are definitely the Bob Ross of Fusion, I'm happy now and confident that I can switch from Adobe
Almost 4 years ago you posted this and still a really great video to learn a lot from you, btw huge change to the studio :D that is awesome to see
this guy is blessed with the gift of explaining
I'm so entertained by this example. Great job
You, my friend, are heaven sent! Please make more of these Videos, they are just super helpful.
Absolute genius, brilliantly done Casey
This is genius man. You are the Unmesh of fusion!
The whole sandwich expression was superb😄, I mean who else explained this better😃💯💯💯Great job
That was ridiculously well explained.
I had been working on something, messing around for hours and after this video I cleaned it up in about 30 seconds. The effect mask took me awhile to wrap my head around, then you got to it later and it's a game changer
Fantastic tutorial. This should be linked in the DaVinci Resolve documentation. Thank you very much.

Great way to illustrate using nodes.

Super classy teaching skills. PB and jelly is not so popular in the UK, but it sooo worked in this example. Thanks!
This made it so clear and simple!! Thank you!

thanks...all of your videos are of great knowledge....still most of them goes over my head....but I love your teachings👌👌👌👌👌👍
Really good - was struggling with how a node even works...so now I have a better idea...Thinking of moving from Premiere / AE to Resolve
Was really scared of nodes until this video. Thanks a lot man i cant explain my appreciation enough 👊🏼
I can't stress how amazing this video is. Thank you so much for making it. It was so clear and easy to follow and super motivating.
This guy's videos are the best.
Good teaching illustration with the PBandJ Sandwich!
the best fusion guide
Well done Casey. I thoroughly your video and illustration.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It still seems like a lot of work , but I think once I've explored Fusion, I'll enjoy it.
You are excellent teacher Casy. Thank you for sharing this video.
LOLOL!!! You are good, Sir!! Toaster. Mouth. You're a RIOT!! Love all of your content. Tremendous help for a NOOB such as myself.
Fantastic! I have used Jaleo/Mistika over the years and it was very similar. Your explanation was simple and demystifying.
WOW! Casey, simply brilliant!
The best explanation ever
That PB & J analogy is absolutely genius!
This is one of the best explanations of nodes I've ever seen. Thank you!
Im upset this doesn't have 100k+ views tbh, this is blenderguru level of teaching. Thanks a lot.
Thank you, this helped me sooo much!! Outstanding demonstration..... Keep it up the good work
very helpful, finally I totally know why many people use nodes.
Wow. This reminds me of using nodes in 3d cad programs like dynamo for Revit and grasshopper for Rhino. Great explanation Casey. Many thanks!
This is a genius way to teach nodes

Thanks a lot for telling the ultimate basics of nodes...It solved my confusion with fluid.....Best fo luck and congratulation on 100k subs
Thank you very much, after a long time of conFusion I understood it now. Greetings from Hannover, Germany
Very beautifully explained man! Nice work!
