Her character was in limbo. I don’t think they had decided if they wanted to kill Macy off hence the coma. The AMC opportunity came up and Bobbie Eakes asked to be released from her contract…at least that’s what I read.
I never understood why she wasn't recast. The show managed to survive Taylor's new actress and Hunter Tylo had a far more rabid fanbase than Bobbie Eakes ever did.
Thorne slept with Darla and she got pregnant with baby Ally. Macy was singing in a nightclub and the giant crystal chandelier fell on her, putting her in a coma. She later died off screen when Sally said she pulled the plug on her because she was never going to wake up. Sally, pulling the plug on her was never shown though. It wasn’t shown because the writers/Brad Bell didn’t want to ‘completely’ kill her off. When Brad wrote Macy out this time, Bobbie Eakes quickly got a job on All My Children. Brad left the door open for Eakes (or a recast) to return to the show as Macy, hence the reason her death was never actually shown on screen. After Darlene Connelly (Sally) died, Brad admitted that he intended to bring Macy back on the show, revealing that Sally never really pulled the plug on her, but that her mother whisked her away to another hospital on the tropical island that Sally ‘’moved too” to stay for the rest of her life (that was Brad’s way of writing out Sally because Connelly died in real life. He wanted her character to live on, basking in the sun on a tropical island surrounded by hot cabana boys). Anyways, Brad intended to bring Macy back after a while, explaining that her mother Sally did not in fact take her off life support and her and Macy were both staying on the tropical island, away from the ‘evil’ Forresters so they could be happy not being around that dangerous drama anymore. Macy was supposed to eventually return to LA and obviously surprise everyone, and then start up Spectra Fashions again. But Brad changed his mind and decided not to bring Macy back, then he decided to kill off Darla too, and then kill off Ally, thus ending the entire Spectra clan once and for all. The only survivor was CJ, who did later return to help Sally’s young granddaughter “Young Sally Spectra” start up Spectra Fashions again, which happened years later, but Brad got bored and didn’t want to rehash the Forrester/Spectra rivalry all over again, so he wrote ‘Young Sally” and her entire family/friends out after about a year. And then as a final Spectra send off from the show, he had the Spectra Fashions building blown up and destroyed, thus ending Spectra from the show entirely and forever. In other words, Brad ruined his own show. Lol.
I think Sally was upset because Oscar decided to reopen the club despite the fact that Macy was in that condition because of him as it was his enemies that put the chandelier off. Sally considered his decision disrespectful towards her daughter. I remember Amber fought hard for him to make this decision because she wanted to sing there.
Always loved Darlene Coney as Sally! Her character was always sassy and bitchy at the same time.
Sally was great. She made me laugh so many times when I was a child. ❤ Rest in peace, lovely Darlene.

She went to AMC because she was fired by B&B. She would have stayed on B&B but the writers didn’t want to write for Macy.
