I know I said this already but it bears repeating. It is _outrageous_ that Thorne just left Kimberly alone to deliver this news to Sally. Not only is it lacking in compassion to do that to Kimberly who is obviously traumatized and grieving (and who just lost her dad too!) but it's also incredibly uncaring and disrespectful to his history with Sally _and_ Macy. This is just unredeemable behavior by Thorne.

    • @annieo6527

I agree with you 100%! Thorne is afraid of Sally's (justified) reaction and so he leaves it all to a young girl. And then he spends an entire episode crying to _Brooke_ about how he loved Macy. While saying how relieved he is that Brooke didn't die too (which, by the way, she would have if Macy hadn't spent an entire episode putting pressure on Brooke's wound).

    *Macy's Tragic Death*
Macy's first death in 2000 is, to me, the most tragic death in the history of the show. Macy died heartbroken, terrified and alone, having lost everything - her marriage, her sobriety, her dignity, her sanity, even her last beautiful memory of her and Thorne together - and having faiIed in her attempt to warn Thorne and Brooke and save _him_ from future heartbreak.
She never got a chance to say goodbye to her family, and her goodbye to her husband was filled with tragic irony. Macy instructed Thorne to save Brooke - the woman she hat e d and the reason her husband was leaving her - first, and Thorne promised to be back for Macy but never followed through on that promise, although she trusted that he would.
And the most tragic thing of all was that what doomed Macy to destruction in the first place was an act of _compassion._ Her following Thorne to Venice to warn him about Brooke was what set the entire course of events in motion that ended in Macy's death. And what made her vuInerable and ultimately destroyed her were essentially _good_ qualities - her loving Thorne, forgiving him, and trusting him.
The circumstances surrounding Macy's death were also unusually crueI and undignified - from the car expIosion, to the way Sally found out about her beloved daughter's death (including Kimberly describing Macy being "bIown to pieces"), to CJ losing both his wife and sister in a matter of days, to Thorne quickly moving on and continuing his romance with Brooke as if his wife's death didn't affect him all that much, to the funeral that went off the raiIs.
It was, in every way, the opposite of a "Beautiful Death" (see Becky's dea th in episode 3329). It was an ugIy, gut-wrenching, tragic death with no silver lining, which left several characters on the show with scars that never healed (until Macy was brought back years later). And while Becky's lack of a point of view made her death easier to watch, Macy's fate is made more emotional because right until the last few moments, we are actually seeing it from Macy's point of view - it's as if we were in the car with her.
The "classic tragedy" structure of the entire storyline also adds to its impa ct - from the moment Macy shows up in Venice, her fate is sealed and everything that happens next has an undercurrent of inevitability, a cha in of events that can only end in disaster, and which is driven towards its conclusion by the combined character flaws of everyone involved. Macy's alcoholism and her love for Thorne, Thorne's rivalry with Ridge, Brooke's transference of her ob session with Ridge onto his brother, Stephanie's feelings about Brooke and the physical toIl it takes on her, Ridge and Eric's desire to protect Stephanie at any cost, even Sally's and Kimberly's loyalty to Macy and Rick's loyalty to his mother, all create a perfect storm with Macy at the center. and that final night, when she once again takes off on an impulsive journey to warn Thorne about Brooke, just like she did when she went to Italy, Macy comes full circle.
This is also tragic in the sense that Macy's death is not, structurally, a random accident but a _sacrifice._ The one whose life was initially being thre at ened was Stephanie, but Eric, Ridge and Taylor took action in Venice to save Stephanie's life, without taking into account that their actions didn't actually prevent the disaster but only _redirected_ it from Stephanie to Macy. In this game of human chess, Macy was the innocent pawn being sacrificed for the queen. Macy's death is a direct consequence of the attempt to save Stephanie's life.
(Or, in other words, this whole storyline is a variation of the classic troIIey problem, a hypothetical ethicaI dilemma where a bystander watches a train about to run over a person, and has the option to puII a lever and redirect it onto another track where there is _another_ person. Macy was safe until the oncoming train was redirected from Stephanie's track to hers.)
But, of course, it's more complex than that, because Macy's death is also a major "Have It Both Ways". We were rooting for Macy to get her alcoholism under control, remove herself from the mess that is Brooke and Thorne, and move on with her life, while Thorne realizes his mistake and gets exactly what he deserves. Instead this storyline appears to move in the _opposite_ direction - Macy dying and Brooke living happily ever after with Thorne. But the outcome we were hoping for will _also_ happen. We get the drama of Macy's death _and_ the catharsis of her getting to say "I told you so".

Sally refuses to believe and asks if she’s in the hospital even though deep down she knows it’s unlikely but still grabs on the tiny chance of that and even after she knows it still takes her a few seconds to let in sink in
Kimberly already knows but still hangs on to a little hope only to

CJ is already grieving, if that, he’s been through so much as it is, so now when he hears this news, he doesn’t even have the power to snap or even cry, even when he does start to cry, it’s still not all the way, because he’s choking from the inside, he’s like “god not her too, I can’t believe I have to take another loss”

These past three episodes, especially this one, were so affecting that I actually cried a little and had to put them aside for a few hours before commenting. The Spectra family finding out about the sudden, shocking death of a loved one hit too close to an actual experience in my life. When the policemen showed up at the door, I almost lost it. All this is to say, kudos to the cast for a job well done.
I had some thoughts about the denouement of Thorne and Macy’s marriage but after reading @annieo6627’s masterful essay in these comments, I have nothing to add there. I’ll just say that Thorne allowing a hysterical, practical hyperventilating Kimberly drive herself home alone in that state -right after her sister was killed in a car accident, no less - literally made me gasp in shock. I couldn’t believe the writers had him do that, and don’t even get me *started* on him not having the balls to tell Sally and Clark to their faces about what happened. I was so angry at the character I fast-forwarded through the WH/KKL scenes. *Bad* move having those two front and center today.
One thought: while everyone was great, Darlene Connelly was definitely my #1 performer of the episode. Sally is so often written as a larger-than-life character that it’s easy to forget what a truly masterful actor Connelly can be. I may be projecting based on my own experiences, but I think she was playing Sally as if Sally knew on some level that Macy had died from the minute she saw Kimberly, but only allowed herself to become consciously aware of it gradually throughout the episode- almost as a coping mechanism.
First, we see the pre-Kimberly scenes with Sally and Clark, when Sally is looking through the Macy album. She senses something is wrong, but doesn’t know what.
Then, she waits. The anxiety grows but she still talks in terms of helping Macy.
Then she sees Kimberly. To me, it seemed as if she almost flinched, had an imperceptible look of horror. But she buries it and turns to questioning Kimberly.
The rest of the encounter, with Kimberly sobbing out her story bit by bit, shows Sally in an almost bargaining mode. She shows Kimberly tremendous compassion, almost as if in so doing she can be kind to Macy. She also does this kind of reframing of events; every time Kimberly gets closer to the truth, Sally tries to jump in with a preferred narrative (“So Macy was drinking, right? That’s why you’re so upset? Don’t worry, we’ll be there for her. We’ll put her in rehab. We’ll help her rebuild her life when she gets out.”) Then when Kimberly finally blurts out the news, she acts as if the poor girl lost her mind, is just confused. But it seems more forced and less convincing. Like it’s harder to build the reality she wants to believe.
Then the police come. And at the end of the episode, when Sally accepts the truth and starts sobbing in Clark’s arms, it’s truly amazing to watch Darlene Connelly’s face. You get the sense that she’s finally letting go of a breath she’s been holding all evening; when her face falls, you can practically see her face and body falling apart physically in response to the trauma. And the more dramatic ending only works because of the more subtle but equally skillful work Connelly does throughout the episode.

Beautiful post!👏👏👏I had a similar feeling watching this episode, where I was in the live chat but had to stop commenting or reading whenever Sally was on screen because I just couldn't take my eyes off her (and even now the morning after, that scene stays with me and I will probably rewatch it later just to appreciate all the nuances of DC's performance).
You outline Sally's gradual acceptance of the devastating tragedy so well in your brilliant close reading of the scene! For me, a lot of it was in her tone of voice, where she was trying to sound reassuring and almost casual, and you could still hear the panic underneath it in her voice (for example, when she said "did you see Macy's body?" intending to sound calm but then her voice cracked when she said "body", or when she asked the police "and she... is my daughter... in the hospital?" as if she was going to ask if Macy was dead but couldn't speak the word).
I am sorry to hear that you have had a similar experience in real life - no one should have to go through something like this with a loved one. 😢❤‍🩹

When I was a teenager, I lost my older brother very suddenly and unexpectedly. So I identified with CJ in this episode, but I was most affected by Sally. I think seeing her brought back what it was like watching my parents experience the sudden loss of their child, which was as traumatic to me as the loss itself. That’s why I was struck by Darlene’s performance; I knew how genuine it was.

LOVE this post Faye! Darlene really was incredible. Sally's breakdown at the end was obviously the big moment, but I also want to highlight two other great acting moments before that. First, the way she says, "Brooke?" at 9:00 and you can just feel the entire tone of the scene change. It's also somewhat _funny_ and Darlene has always been good about injecting comedy into a scene, even in unexpected moments like this (she's the "sad clown" as Annie said) Secondly, the way her eyes widen at 13:53 when Kimberly says Macy was "blown to pieces." It's as if the horror of that image makes it more real for Sally and pulls her out of her denial, and she becomes scattered after that.

I was too young to fully take it all in at the time but I do remember my mother getting that phone call, and how when she looked at me crying and just said "Daddy", I knew.
