There have been a few videos in our bakery review series, but this is only the second time I have ever asked two bakeries to re-create one of my designs! Reviewing two local bakeries who attempted my viral 3D carved kawaii avocado cakel! I unboxed the two cakes and was shocked by the results! They both used different tecniques to attempt my cake including fondant, buttercream and chocolate. How can three cakes look SOOOO different?

I actually like the rough edging on the 5* one as it makes it look more like an actual avo. Plus I honestly think the spray splatters add for an extra bit of texture and shading, I honestly assumed it was on purpose until you pointed it out, and even then I'm still not sure it's accidental as you can see similar along the bottom too. I thought it was shading, as from a distance it gives it some added pop. Only downside is not having anything in the pit when the video showed it with something.

I agree also. Same with the uneven pit color, she made it sound like that was something wrong or something they messed up, but to me it was pretty clear it was purposefully done to make it look more realistic

i'm guessing they didn't smash it because they already pointed out that it's not even a chocolate ball, sounds like it's just more cake covered in fondant and tacked on with toothpicks.
If it was just cake I would have liked to have seen her cut into anyways. But yes I was very disappointed.

Honestly, I think the 5 star went more towards giving it a slightly realistic look. So the 'airbrush splotches' are supposed to be there since an actual avocado would have those speckles as well. And the splotchy paint on the chocolate sphere is like how an actual pit would look.
The description of the cake made me want to go and get a cake asap though, haha.
About the 5 star cake: yes, there were flaws with the spray coloring, the dowel was visible on top, and there was a smudge on the fondant in back. But I get the impression that the bakery was attempting to make the avocado look as realistic as possible. You pointed out that the coloring on the pit looked splotchy, but I think that was their intent, as real avocado pits are pretty splotchy. I even think they deliberately did a choppy job with the edges of the dark green fondant. Avocado peels have rough edges when you slice them open. I like that they included the stem stub on top, even if it feels like a missed opportunity to use that to cover the dowel.
Having said that, however, I’m highly disappointed they didn’t fill the pit with any goodies. Especially if the video you sent them with your order specifically showed you doing that with yours. I don’t think it would’ve mattered if they put something different inside, the fact that its just a hollow shell is just downright tragic.
To address some of the replies: yes, I understand that the first priority of these cakes (and ultimately the purpose of the video) is to see how closely the bakery can replicate her original creation. I was simply surprised that she looked at what appeared to be a creative flair that the 5 star added to theirs, and then treated it like technical flaws. She's been known to still commend some bakeries for doing things a little different, even if it's not what she asked for, and I felt she didn't do that this time.
I thought the exact same thing, especially in terms on the rough edges of the dark green fondant!
You can even see different shades of green for the flesh between the edge and the center. It is more realistic than the original design.
She always puts down people's work who she sees as a threat to her own. Its not shocking anymore
@@romanaa7070 oh I don’t think that! I think she was just comparing as a kawaii cake rather than just reviewing as it’s own cake. I love watching these videos- it’s important to remember it’s her opinion, we can have a different opinion of course!
Agreed. It was my favourite cake out of the three because of how realistic it looked; even with its fun twist.
I can’t imagine making that second cake and letting it leave the store for $300!! The fondant on the back was literally broken

And the colors look like they just used store bought green fondant, they definitely didn't color it themselves. That is not avocado green. For 300 dollars I'd expect my avocado cake to be avocado green.

I don’t know how they would even consider pricing a cake that high with that quality. I wouldn’t by a $20 cake from them after seeing that kind of work. Fingerprints and nail marks in the board fondant…eeew!

Not breaking open the 1 star pit is going to haunt me all day. I get that it wasn't chocolate or maybe even hollow, but I wanted to see what happened and what it was.

You can get a little hint at 7:27, how it's completely separate to the advocado. Must be very light to be attached with toothpicks to it. But def speculation isn't the same as knowing and I also want to know

I get that the smooth fondant edge looks nicer, but technically a fresh cut avocado has a rough edge!
This is exactly what I thought, I felt it was an effort to make the texture as realistic as possible.
That's what I was thinking! You don't want a smooth edge, it would look rough after you cut it open!!!
I think the pit of the avocado was supposed to look splotchy. It was their way of making it more realistic, cause a lot of the time avocado pits look patchy, especially if you leave them out for a tiny bit.
I think the splotchiness of the avacado pit on the 5 star one was intentional. It looks like a real avacado pit
When it cut back to both of them on the table together I was struck by just how much that thing looked like an avocado. The shading, the skin, the shape, everything
The pit in the 5* cake looked super realistic! That is what avocado pits look like. The airbrushed skin also looked realistic, rather than be all one green color.

The back texture of the avocado of the 5 stars store is super. Even better than her original cake. Also the wooden board is beautiful as well.
Everything that 5 star bakery does is EXCEPTIONAL. I loved their summer ice cream sundae cake, and their naughty Santa cake too. THE TALENT IS UNREAL.

The 5 star one was perfect in my opinion. The small imperfections just made it more realistic. Only disappointing nothing fell out the chocolate ball.
They roughly cut the fondant for the front of the 5 star cake because it looks more realistic

I genuinely can't believe how much cakes cost in America/Canada. It's insane compared to here in the UK. I got an insanely decorated, intricate cake for my father's birthday, big enough for 40 people for about 60 pounds. That would be, what? $100
Yes! Here in South Africa a 5 tier top of the range wedding cake would cost about $600
As an American it always surprises me too😭 A one tier cake with minimal decorating can be 35$
It's the same in Australia, it's seriously expensive
I really like the jagged edges on the edge of the fondant at the front of the 5star because it mimics how a real avocado would be

For those wondering, Laurie said that the belly of the 1-star bakery cake is made of some sort of styrofoam ball covered in brown fondant

If you cut an avocado the edge is rough so I prefer the edge definition on the 5* one!

Ha Ha Jordan….I’m a amateur/hobby cake decorator. And let me tell you, the 1 star bakery isn’t half bad compared to what I have seen go out from some home bakers. Would make you shudder. The majority of home based decorators are pretty good. But there are some, let’s just say, they need a looooooot more practice before they start selling cakes. From structure to design to execution. But they still manage to stay in business. 🤪
So.e don't gave the same expectations of the cakes they get.
myb their sides are good enough to hold them up for years, not the cake but others like bread or biscuits or donuts 🤔 but so far, i think this 1star avocado is better than other 1star, like laurie said they're both standing 😂
I thought they both looked really good. It would be fun if you brought them both out and critiqued them before revealing which was the one star and the five star. That way we could guess which was which.

Seriously Laurie before even watching the video I can assure you that no bakery can make the exact cake that you make. I'm not sure if you need to hear it (I hope u don't because your amazing) but your an awesome cake decorator super halairious and your energy throughout the years hasent vanished
the things you hate are the good things. The varigated color on the avacado pit like real vegitation, the air brushing on the front, many avacados are darker near the rind....I do wish there were sprinkles in the pit tho.

I have to say it's very interesting watching a cake designer look at another cake designer. You can tell she loves making cakes and loves her job because of how much work she puts into it and how she can notice and see things that don't look appealing and how much fondant they put and the taste and texture.

Neither of those cakes are worth $300! The first one maybe $80-100 but the 2nd $60 max. I use to do cakes & while I did under price them I am sure, that size of a cake doesn't require a ton of work. It doesn't take days to prep for it, it can be done all in one afternoon. The first one was super cute, just needed the pit to be slightly smaller and have candy inside.
You're time and their time is absolutely worth that. One afternoon of your time, the skill and artistry involved, the materials. SO many artists undervalue their own work. YOU'RE WORTH IT!
@@baseboned I agree, the problem is no one wants to pay for my time just the cake. I have done cakes that took days of prep ahead of time, making fondant decorations, drying them out, baking the cakes, prep, purchasing items needed then actually spending hours on end assembling. I spent many nights up past midnight finishing a cake.

You didn't crack open the pit of the 1 star cake. I was wondering if there was anything inside. Why don't you have the 1 star, 3 star and 5 star bakeries bake a "Fall Tree" 3D cake. Fall color leaves, squirrel on the trunk, wide branches, etc.
