Hey Leon, thanks for your great little demo of this wonderful amp!
(Just in case you get bored by tweaking sounds on the front panel of the 6100 - you could fiddle with the damping switch of the power amp, set it to 50 Watts or even only 25 Watts by running 2 Power tubes as Triodes instead of Pentodes.)As the models came in several versions, you might be interested to know that Marshall made 5 versions of this amp. In this video you see the 2nd version of the following:
-6100LE limited run blue tolex, high gloss chassis, EL34
    -6100LE blue tolex, EL34
    -6100 black tolex, EL34
    -6100 black tolex, 5881
-6100LM black tolex, 5881, red channel gain mod
I dig both my first and the 5th versions of the amps, plus my nice little 6101LE combo with 200W Celestion Gold and Anniversary 6912 and 6960ALE cabinets.
As cool as the mirror finish of the original LE versions looks on first sight, the labeling is painstakingly difficult to read on stage low light conditions. However I’d still not trade my little heavy weights.
    :)
Other details I very much dig are MIDI switching and individual signal levels for the channels. So I can loop-in 6100 preamps into the effects chain of my good ole BOSS GT-5 which add all kinds of distortion, EQ, reverb chorus etc.

Glad you made a video about this amp. It is one that not a lot of people talk about. It gives you the classic marshall cleans and dirt. It also lets you get to modern territory. I hope to make this my next Marshall.

I have the amp in the black version. Had it since 1994, retired from live use now and only used for studio work today.
This amp is such a beast. It will give you anything including Mode Four tones if dialled in correctly and even brew your coffee for you if asked politely.
So versatile and perfect for anything Marshall especially for studio work.
Love it forever,- will never part with it.

I bought both my blue vinyl Marshall 6101 1x12 combo amp and blue vinyl 1912 1x12 closed back cab back in 1993. Great amp demo! It's definitely one of the forgotten and underrated amps in the Marshall product line. It's a very feature laden amp made for the modern guitarist. The clean/crunch/lead channels with 3 band EQ, master presence & volume, parallel/series effects loop. The full/half power switch & pentode/triode switch allows the amp to switch up or down from 100/50 watts or 50/25 watts which makes it perfect for rehearsals/clubs/large stages. The XLR direct out is one of my favorite features and being able to mute the amp for recording is a very useful feature. The MIDI switching works very well. The parallel/series effects loop is very cool as I tend to run mine in parallel with the effects 100% wet. I haven't used the line in/line out feature on the amp yet. The EV12L speaker has a 200 watt capacity and weighs about 16lbs in the combo cab which makes it heavy. The Celestion G12-150B speaker in the 1912 1x12 closed back cab makes the combo amp more punchy like a half stack and can handle the full 100 watts onstage.
I've had the MIDI board malfunction due to excessive heat from the amp since it has no ventilation vents like the 6100 amp heads have. I was able to get it repaired by my local amp tech and it was up & running. You'll also need to replace the power tubes & rebias the amp like any other amp. The V2 & V3 preamp tubes are related to ch.2 & 3 and will go micorphonic when the 12AX7 preamp tubes become worn. You will need to carry a spare 12AX7 preamp to swap out, if this happens. I would also recommend carrying an extra EL-34 power tube & fuses as a back up as well. If you have original factory 3 button footswitch, save it from wear & tear, and use a MIDI controller instead to switch your amp channels & effects.

Compared to the tsl 100, it is way higher gain. I like to layer them both. I use the 6100 with both switches pushed in on the crunch channel and I use the tsl on the 3rd high gain channel.

Hey Leon! First off, thanks for giving this amp a chance. I feel it's one of the most underrated and misunderstood amps in the Marshall catalog. I think you really did it justice.
Similarly to your clips, I find this amps just LOVES greenbacks which is such a shame it shipped with the 75-watt celestials of the day. There is just so much more to this thing!
While I’ve owned and loved a few 6100’s over the years, I’ve had a 6101 combo the longest. It's my favorite “grab and go” amp of all time. With the open back cap (loaded with a Celestion Greenback of course!) it can cover fender blackface cleans, Plexi tones, stock and modded JCM 800 tones and then take things into SLO territory with channel 3…..all with a 1x12 combo.
The low power section really helps you unlock the magic and I tend to leave mine in 25-watt mode (because greenbacks) and that really lets you push the power section more to really fatten things up at lower volumes. The dampening switch lets you control the feel and make it more saggy or more tight depending on how you like it. The auto settings is tight on clean and saggy on overdrive. Personally, I like it the other way around. Also, the “low volume compensation” mode is meant for the bedroom player…..it hypes the treble and bass that comes back when you have the master up to a healthy amount!
Another awesome feature is the fact that you can switch between a series or a parallel effects loop. It's really cool to be able to run your delays 100% wet and then just the effects knob on the amp to blend in the right mix without pushing the entire signal through the effects. A super sleeper feature in my opinion!
I did a review of this amp back in 2011. I’ve learned way more about it since then but thought it might be cool to check out nonetheless!

Ive had one of the combos for over fifteen years. I put 2 el84s in using yellow jackets for half power mode and 2 6L6s in the outer half of the power stage for when full power. The clean is great. The two higher gain options in the second channel are best with this one. The third channel is usable if you put in a 12at7 or 12au7 in the extra dedicated spot. -its an 11 tube amp, for most the extra tube in ch3 preamp circuit is in the way. I run the line output into a 73 ampegv4 and musicman 115rh 75 cab, in addition to the stock g12k-100, and a separate 112 closed cab with an eminence manowar.

I’ve toured with two of these heads for the last 15 years plus. They have served me well but are delicate and spent time getting repaired due to all the jumpers between the PC boards. The effects loop is the best due to a parallel option and levels for each channel. Usually sound guys never have to use any eq. Kind of like a JCM 900 on steroids. Thanks for putting up this demo on my most favorite head, best demo out there.

@@georgebarry3153 I have a guy locally that has worked on mine a million times without too many issues. Most of the problems are in the jumper cables going between the boards. After you fix the connection usually by a direct solder, that problem never happens again. They have actually been really reliable I just have them gone through every year before the summer. I worn out the master volumes a couple times and had a switch on the back go bad once. I haven't replaced pre-amp tubes in forever (3 or 4 years) and just do the power section once a year. Low volume compensation is designed to give you a bigger and fuller sound at low volumes only.
You can run this amp with master volume at zero connected to a cab or load and take the xlr out on the back. Perfect for keeping your stage volume low. There's also a pentode /triode switch which get even more vintage type sound in triode mode.

The low compensation is essentially the original "Deep" switch like on a DSL. It adds bottom or resonance for low volume playing. I had one of the "LE" versions back in the late 90's. The "LE" had blue tolex as well but had polished brass on everything that you could see that was metal, including the logo, transformers and tube covers/retainers, very shiny. There were only about 800 of them made. That was one of my favorite Marshalls. It has the best clean on any Marshall. The key to a really good tone for that head is to put a BBE in the serial loop and leave on all the time. Satriani used one of these for quite a while as well. I ended up selling mine because these amps suffered from very expensive repair bills if they had to go to the shop. Next, you need to find an original Jubilee head. Two of the best Marshall tones ever, the 6100LE on Ch 2 B and the Jubilee with the master cranked and the gain around noon.

Sounds great with combo speakers but nice and warm with vintage 25s and a bit crispier and punchy with 1960a cab. Midi control and effects loop was great to pair up with outboard rack effects. I've had my 6101LE, the combo version which I purchased new about 23 years ago. It's the limited edition version with the brass chassis. It's an amazing amp and seriously loud. Only problem I've had is the noise level when you turn up the gain on ch2 or ch3 is over the top. I've had it checked and told it's just a noisy amp. I've found ways to work around this issue though. Thanks for the demo, nice to see there is still interest in these babies.

I bought a 30th anniversary shortly after they came out from musicians friend. After I got it it started blowing fuses so sent it back and they sent another and again it was blowing fuses. I sent it back but now I'm wondering if the electricity in my apartment may have had something to do with it as it was an older house. I never had a problem with my fender twin. I would try to crank it up but seemingly for a 100 watt amp it didn't seem to crank out the volume you would have expected. It was my 1rst marshal and unfortunately my last. Watching this video though, you were able to get some nice tones. Would have liked to listen to this amp cranked up volume wise just to hear the power. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the one I got but with the fuses blowing, obviously something was not jiveing right after the 2nd amp did the same thing. I had bought a half stack marshal cabinet to connect to. I do love the marshal sound but have settled for Marshall profiles on a kemper profiling amp profiled by Micheal Britt and I have to say those profiles are bad ass though it's not the real thing with the amp, but in a recording it's next to impossible to distinguish between real and Kemper. I did have a 50th and. Anniversary Vox H2L 30 watt. Handwired amp which sounded very sweet but extremely loud. I bought vox profiles from Micheal Britt and instantly felt as if I was playing out of the Vox. Im not a Kemper advocate as I still really like the real thing, it just I could never afford the many amps I've downloaded from very skilled profiles.. technology has come a very long ways. I never had youtube as a tool to learn songs as that just didn't exist. Today's young players, many take that for granted and don't realize how good they have it....

Two weeks ago a fellow YT'r covered mastering/audio analysis w/ software plugins. Blew my F'n mind when I sat down behind some analyzers. Here I thought I knew sound but nope, I'm deaf. I am still learning. I thought Mesa was scooped, but the analysis shows Marshall with some hard scoops and the Mesa with a sweet full frequency range. WTF? I next honed in on different speakers, because each different one has its own mic/pre/channel in, I have tweaked them with different EQs, I wanted to know what makes me like... ie; why do I appreciate the sound of the V30/Mesa or what's so special about these Alnico speakers I use.
I went back to old recordings, some of which I hated, with renewed enthusiasm. I also reinterpret these different modes on my amps. There's a reason the engineers built the amps with these, and I seem to not fully understand.
That is my goal. Learn. Learn to exploit the gear for optimal results. We often see A/B testing with identical settings, because it seems scientific to do it that way, but a proper comparison is optimal settings, this is the best I can get out of both, again trying to interpret the engineers concepts, exploiting them to their fullest.
    You rock Leon!

Or why Marshalls still stand out better in a live mix than a Recto all being equal? I understand its simply the timbre of a given amp however timbre qualities (i.e. freq, spectral envelope, transients, etc) do not identify the harmonic overtones and clipping dynamics of gain specifically. I think benchmarking gain structures will help us all create and mix better music in the new age of DSP.

The Lead channel reminds me of a current day DSL. Much more saturated and fizzier, for lack of a better word, but I don't mean fizzy in a bad way like some amps can be. I have owned many Marshall heads over the years , but the 6100 is the one i kept over them all . IMO it blows away most other Marshall amps .
These heads are full of features that many Marshall heads do not have etc . Just an all around killer amp !
    Some confusion clarified : Channel 2 Mode A = Super lead / JTM45 Channel 2 Mode B = JCM800 Channel 2 Mode C = JCM900
Channel 3 was to be even more gain than most Marshall amps of the time etc.
These amps are super sensitive to what kind and condition of tubes , more so than any other Marshall head i've owned !
If you're a Marshall Amp fan you owe it to your self to google these heads and do a read of what they can do , this demo was too short to cover all the key features , don't get me wrong Leon does great demo's , but its hard to cover all this amp does in that short of time .

@@@mcdriveit1098 The 6100 is a killer amp from Marshall , underrated i think because it came out around the JCM900 eara . I have a 1996 6100LM and love it ! The only real negatives of this amp are this . You can't foot switch the modes on channel 2 , this should have been made available imo . The other is channel 3 , it's an acquired taste , its not my fav high gain distortion , a reworked modification of this channel would be great . If these issues were to be done to this head , it would have the makings of a incredible / legendary tube amp !!

I have a 6100LM w/ 6L6GCs through a 1960A loaded with G12T-75s. I use the MIDI capability with my pedalboard and its loop switcher. Interesting thing about this amp: the standby switch, when off, cuts bias to both the power tubes and the board taking care of the compensated/uncompensated line outs as well as the FX loop. So for silent recording without plugging into a load box instead of your cab, you have to take it off standby and use the "mute power amp" switch.

I'm rather chuffed to see that you also crank the bass on the lead channel. I thought I was a bit alone in that, most of the fanatics on the Marshall forums like to turn it back a bit as I recall. Personal favorites are channel 3 with the gain boost in (doesn't actually seem to do much to me, but I feel like it does slightly tighten some things up a bit) channel 2-B, and then the clean channel with bright/mid shift out. I usually leave the high compensation switch in. Your mileage may vary because I play a 7-string electric violin rather than a guitar. :P

I think this app has a lot of innovative features that have never been featured on any other Marshal before or since and winning creating new music it is very helpful to have three channels that you can switch to very quickly I have several other amps but this one has always been one of my favorites for plugging straight in and just going for different sounds on the Fly the damping switch on the back works extremely well with the fuzz box in the green Channel it gives more movement to the speaker somehow which give the fuzz even more gain Tully Channel I think when it's set right sounds better than any of the modern Marshals that I've heard coming out since like 2000 all of these newer models have a lot of modes but the sounds kind of stink nothing on this app ever sounds bad the note to note articulation and singing nature of the amp really is like a tonal orgasm I absolutely love this app I don't think it gets nowhere near as much love as it should on UA-cam it's one of the best Marshalls ever made in my opinion the only bad thing about it is when it comes time to retube it cost a lot of money because it has 11 total tubes so normally tubing up almost any other Marshall is considerably cheaper but good Lord when you've got the thing going it is all inspiring

A very versatile amp; Leon obviously didn't have the instruction manual to explain the features but did a great job reviewing the amp nonetheless. If you've never seen the LE version, I hope these links work. Marshall only made 800 of the brass plated 6100LE. I recently serviced the tuners so I included a picture of the naked chassis. It would be referred to as a boutique amp today. Note the multiple boards and connections discussed by others in this thread.
