The Remotest Off Grid House in England | Tibbett's Lookout - Lundy Island
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 чер 2024
- Join me as I spend a challenging winter week living in England's most remote off-grid cabin/house.
This converted pre-World War One built British Admiralty Lookout and Signalling Station is located on Tibbetts Hill on the uninhabited North End of Lundy Island.
Lundy is semi-wild island and a Nature Reserve, located 20 minutes by helicopter or 3 hours by ship from the English mainland west coast.
The island is situated strategically between the Bristol Channel shipping lane and the Atlantic Ocean, making it of interest to the British Royal Navy during the 17th - early 20th Centuries, including during World War 1.
Tibbett's Admiralty Lookout on Lundy is a UK Grade Two Listed Building, and has been fully restored to its 1906 former self by The Landmark Trust, it is now a self contained tiny house, completely off grid and over 30km from the nearest mainland facilities.
In my House Tour I show that Tibbetts has no electricity, it is lit by victorian era gas lamps, and has a coal fire for heating. Despite this it is remarkably homely and comfortable and perfect for Off Grid Living
Today Lundy has just 25 permanent residents, all of whom live in the village on the south end of the island.
In this video I show how to live in comfort in this isolated off grid house, and during the week I explore some of the island's remote 19th century structures, and abandoned places such as the unmanned North Lighthouse built in 1898. I then have to shelter in place when the island is hit by a ferocious Atlantic storm for 24 hours, which delays my helicopter off the island.

This is why I surrendered my TV licence to watch great content like this on UA-cam. You’re a credit to UA-cam Andy
Here here 👍
I too binned the box I wasnt going to pay tv licensing money on rubbish
Precisely!
Same here 👍👍👍
Same here…yet still getting a lot of junk mail from them which my dog enjoy shredding.
Bulls are not enraged by the colour red, despite the old saying: 'Like a red rag to a bull' - they are in fact colour-blind. What may get them excited is rapid movement. So you can wear any colour jacket you like, provided you don't bob and weave about.
They were Highlands anyway, they are quite docile, especially if left alone.
@@philiprufus4427You could say the same about a tiger or an elephant! 🤣
👍
As the Lundy website notes. "Most of the buildings are constructed from the island’s beautiful light-coloured granite. All properties have hot and cold running water, electricity (except Tibbetts), fully-equipped kitchens, some have open fires or stoves and all have the essentials for immediate occupancy including bed linen and towels."
👏
I have stayed every year for the last 25 years in Woolacombe and looked at Lundy Island with the intention of going there but never done it . Next year I think I will do it thanks to your vlog .
That's what you need for 3 or four months s year no TV. internet and most of all no phone. Unless its salty I cant understand why you cant drink the water. When I'm up the mountains on a hike there's nothing nicer than water from a fast flowing stream or river, beats what comes out of your tap in towns and cities. A winters night wind howling rain lashing of the windows and the fire on and your snuggled up in your bed, i think i just described heaven. Been stuck there Christmas day would make my Christmas.
I can’t believe this video hasn’t had move views than this?
Well done, very interesting, I think we visited this island whilst on holiday in Devon as a child….
It would have been really interesting to hear from a local what living there is like and maybe a little general history of how they came to be there in the first place. Very interesting video.
I would love to live somewhere like here - Maybe not permanently, but certainly as a getaway !
I would love to go there but limited mobilty would make that impossible so watching a video like this is always a great watch!
This is so true. I'm in the same boat and my wife has to holiday with Friends if she wants to walk about. So watching videos like this is great!
Same! I may be confined to a wheelchair outdoors but I can travel the world on UA-cam
There was a time for me also,62 years of it,miss it all !
Love these videos Andy! Laughed out loud at the Greta Thunberg bit haha
Greta Thunderberg ! Is it true she lives under a bridge and scares tourists.
Having stayed in Tibbetts twice I can confirm that it is a wonderful location and very peaceful when the day trippers leave. The only more remote off-grid place I have personally stayed at is in Scotland on the island of Gometra, also highly recommended
Managed to catch a channel I have never seen before just 7 minutes after the video upload. YT algorithm works in strange ways.
My husband and I agree - we would thoroughly enjoy a stay there!
I would absolutely crap my pants with that walk home from the pub 😳
Great video though!
Please don't I think the washing facilities would be basic at best!
With so much secluded open space I'm sure you could find a quiet spot to off-load! 💩
Fortunately you can have a crap AND a shower simultaneously.. they really did think of that.
Lundy is one of my favourite places to be, utter peace and tranquility plus it has a great pub.
Lovely film of your trip. I've stayed on Lundy quite a few times, mostly camping. One of the camps was brought to an end at 2am when a force 8 blew the tent down and I slept in the pub.
I'm envious of you staying in Tibbets, it looks snug and comfortable!
Thanks. Tibbetts is a must do for any Lundy veteran.
I've stayed here 4 times now..stayed 8 weeks over 18years.. try to go ever year.. don't need anywhere else to holiday and I live about 20 miles from lundy as the crow flys.. just the most amazing place in the world in my view... love you Lundy!
Another amazing video! Gas lamps actually carried on in the uk for quite a while. The last gaslit house I saw was in 1969 and I saw propane powered gas lighting being installed in a pub in 1976.
I am a gen-xer and I love An American Werewolf in London I still watch it every now and then. I would love to go there but I most definitely would not be walking at night LOL
It's brought it all back to me Andy 😀. I normally fly in with my Foxbat aeroplane and had a cottage booked for a couple of days in May. On this occasion, we couldn't fly ourselves because the weather forecast was awful and would have made for a dangerous flight. A phone call to the Lundy office was really helpful and they offered us a helicopter transit at a reduced rate because the ferry was out of commission. It was a four hour drive to Hartland from The New Forest but our stay was quite memorable. Our cottage overlooked the harbour. One of our goals was to photograph the Puffins and we succeeded. We walked around the island both ways and look forward to our next return, by aeroplane. Lundy is a healing place, thanks for your great film. If you're interested I have a few films on my channel chasing the sheep off the runway before landing.
I would LOVE to spend time there in that gorgeous cottage with an Atlantic storm raging outdoors!
Being a Brit with a German passport, I had to smile at the mention of the MS Oldenburg, a ship that used to supply the German North sea islands, saved from being scrapped by a British company.
I am an armchair traveller from South Africa. First time watching your UA-cam. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Very reminiscent of the smaller islands in Bass Strait between Tasmania and Victoria. Cold, wet, windy and remote.
You put a lot of effort into everything here for your viewers, well done Andy and thank you for the detail.
Highland cattle are absolute sweethearts. 😅
That's about the extent of 'roughin' it' that I could handle. Brave man, lol!!
Reminds me of The Eye of the Needle.
I remember having to run out to the coal bunker on Winter nights, haha. What a fantastic video, loved every minute of it. There's beauty in the storm when you're warm and snug inside, or even outside but warm and dry with protective clothing. Every season has it's wonder!
That looks like an absolute blast !!! Thanks for posting!
Tibbets and Lundy is a place I could live full time, I listen to gale force storms on YT to get to sleep. Great video awesome place.
I'm glad the algorithm referred you to me. I'm thoroughly enjoying your channel.
This js far better than anything from the BBC for good factual content. And what an enthralling place. The older I get, the less I like people and the ridiculousness of all our modern tech so this absolutely appeals to me
Hmmm. OK well I was born in 1953 in a smallish cottage, in a medium sized village in the midlands (UK). We had gas lighting until I was about 3 or 4...ie about 66 years ago..not 150 years ago! We also had an OUTSIDE toilet until 1983! Hot running water came in '83 too. So...with a couple of solar panels I'd love to live here on Lundy...I'm a radio ham so surounded by only water and a few sheep it'd suit me fine. Great video.
Brilliant video so thank you very much. I heard about Lundy about 60 years ago as a teenager and always wanted to go there. I have left it too late now but your video plays as though I am your companion. Really great filming.
You're crazy, but I love it. Me thinks I would stay in spring or summer to start with and then progress to a winter stay later. I have been to Lundy on the ship. Ahem I was rather violently sick, but not until we nearly reached our destination. I remember going into the church and hearing the wind whistle around the rafters. Magical place, love it...
Perfect Zombie Apocalypse hide out! I’m in!
Oh goodness you were brave to risk it right on Christmas!! I used to live in Somerset, and often used to wonder what it was like on Lundy, that big lonely rock in the sea hunkered down on the horizon. I didn't know there was much there beyond puffins, have to watch your other film as I'm curious now how folk survive out there! Cheers!
What lovely scenery.interesting place to be .Hi from Canada 🇨🇦
This is my kind of holiday.
Good movie choice 😂…
Oh and the island, the little cottage is quite interesting to see…
Thank you for the efforts… 👍
Greetings from Germany everybody 👋
You know you're on a remote island when you call Great Britain the "mainland".
Well it would be!
That brings back memories! We stayed there when I was a kid. Dang, that's about 45 years ago. We had to pump the water pressure to flush the toilet (and I believe we had to dig a hole to empty the tank). We went by ferry and had to transfer to a smaller boat with the day-trippers as it couldn't go in any further. Thanks for making me feel old 😁
Nothing wrong with old 🧓 😉
Know the feeling mate, no more summer trips up the West Highland Railway for me,with other kids from America,Canada The Antipodes and Europe. Great memories though !
@@georgegard.aka.currymonste1498 Whatever gave you that impresssion ? I am old and old age does not always come alone, irrespective of how fit you once were, and I was fit. Medics told me so !
Great adventure! Very well made so thanks for posting! I'm going 22 June for 2 nights camping so this was brilliant! Way better than anything on tv!
Well done Andy, I echo the sentiments below. Looks very cosy with the little stove - and it needs to be!
brilliant video .. that storm in early hours of the last day .. quite eerie
Really enjoyed watching this. Went as a day visit back in 2006. Think I may do it again next year. Don't think I will do it Christmas week like you!! It was great to see how you coped.
Enjoyed the video. Sitting here on a stormy evening in Ireland, I live in the middle of nowhere, so this video was very apt.
Hilarious. Loved the centreparks line
Thank you for sharing this beautiful island with us.
Thanks Andy. An excellent glimpse of Life. Many Thanks.
One of the places that is high on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing your venture!
This is superb . Brixmis is a great read too.
Love the spectacular views and the idea of being an hours walk away from the nearest person - I suppose its not exactly silence with constant wind and regular storms, but it beats the noise of civilization any day of the week! 😌
. . . . . went straight to Google-Maps about 10-seconds after this great video ended !
Thank You
Hello from Queens, NY! Thank you for sharing! I really enjoyed the ride!
what an awesome place.
I absolutely loved all of the American Werewolf in London references. That movie blew my mind when I was little. 🐺 🌙🩸Love your content and Hello from California 👋😊
Greetings from Scoland. What a brilliant video. Really enjoyed that. We have bnearly 800 islands with c. 100 inhabited. Hope to see you soon 😊
One of UA-cam’s finest you are Andy, the content you supply is outstanding, Thankyou!
Loved watching this, great content, thanks.
I want to visit Lundy now! Thank you!
This was great!
oooh, this looks cool. Big Woolacombe fan and Lundy always struck me with wonderment as a kid...'what's out there?!' . Gonna enjoy this, thanks mate.
Thoroughly enjoyed your film! Stay on the path....
Great story and something I would never have otherwise learnt about. Thank you Andy
Andy; just watched your vid on the cottage on Lundy. Very interesting! Well produced! Your an interesting person.
One thing about gas lamps! Had them in my off grid cottage here in Ontario. Algonquin Park. Went through many a lamp burning device. Years ago they were cheap. Not so much today! Came in a small box. You extracted it and fitted the ceramic end into the gas lamp. You lit the gauze mantle with a match. After it had become a solid fixture, you turned the gas on and lit it.
We destroyed many mantles by lighting them the way you did! Took us years but, you put the lighter ABOVE the fixture! You light it from the top!!!
Best
Mike C.
Great video, thank you very much! ❤
I once had the audacity to receive a text message in the Marisco Tavern - I rewarded the look of utter contempt and disdain I received from the staff by leaving immediately and vowing never to give them any of my custom ever again!
I'll get me coat...
My kind of place...looks fabulous.
Fascinating, many thanks!
I loved staying in Tibbits back in 1998. Had no shower back then 😊
....and here people travel all over the place, I could stay a fortnight at Tibbets! 😉
Excellent video, again! 👍🏻👌🏼👏🏻
This island is fasinating and terrifying at the same time.
The Slaughtered Lamb in TAWIL was The Black Swan Ockham nr Cobham, Surrey.
Very useful as I’m heading there for a week in sept 2024
What a fantastic wee place, loved the upload.Cheers mate.
Brilliant! Great vid, well done. I’m surprised it’s not colder there, you’re not even wearing a hat !
Had a great stay one January a few years back, emptied the Tavern Bar of Pussers Rum that week!…..
Wow thanks for this. It reminds me of Tasmania which is also very beautiful.
I’d love to spend some winter nights here. Amazing place
very interesting content my man
Reminds me of Tory Island in Donegal...the lighthouse reminds me of Arranmore lighthouse in Donegal also....brightest lighthouse in the world at one time...
super-stuff..God Bless-from Ireland 🙂.
Excellent video - loved the wildness of outside and the cosiness of the cottage. Linda Australia
You've a spectacular channel and archive sir, glad to have found your content. Cheers !!
Thanks, Andy. I really enjoyed that. 😊 Subbed.
I just found your channel. Amazing. Greetings from Tunisia. In the North we have a coat that looks similar lol.
What a great adventure , love the isolation! I could live there for a few days or maybe decades! From not so isolated Vancouver Island. 😎👍
Loved watching your adventure to Lundy Island. Thanks for sharing this.
An excellent video - thoroughly enjoyable and I've added Lundy to my visit list. Thank you!
Showering in Tibbuts ... Love it
That was a most enjoyable few days. Thank you.😁
Love to stay there with a couple of family members a few good books cook a few casseroles and other things 🔥 fire on nice 😊
Another super video, I must check this out as a few days disconnected is good for us all.
Great watch, this video will get popular
Excellent vlog. Very interesting, thank you!
I’ve stayed on Lundy several times scuba diving, I remember some of the rib crossings in “ calm “ weather
What a place! Loved seeing lundy Island. Brave going alone. Thanks for the tour 👍
Thanks for the adventure but my idea of roughing it is a hotel without room service!! LOL
