Many people consider Texas bluesman Mance Lipscomb to be the greatest blues guitarist and songster of all time. This glowing portrait of the legendary musician (also life-long husband and sharecropper) is among Blank’s special masterworks. Instead of growing bitter, tough times made Lipscomb sweet. This is reportedly the favorite film of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
I love Mance Lipscomb and this film. I wish everyone could see it.
Mance was a sage. And one of the very best of the blues artists. How could one man possess such talent and wisdom too?
Mance's blues and songs changed my life. He was one of the last true songsters, and an extraordinary man.
I saw this short as part of a midnight theater showing in early 1972. I distinctly remember that I thought several guitarists were playing, but it was only Mance. He was not only brilliant, he was genuine.....and he changed my life.
Some people are just too good for this world. RIP Mance.
I saw this film in 1983 in ICANA, Buenos Aires, and get inducted in the BLUES!!! The personality of Lipscomb, the look of Les Blank made a deep impression, since 35 years ago. I´m from Argentina
Love his spirit. What a wonderful soul. RIP
The world we live in today is not the vision that Mance wanted. There is no peace. There's the opposite. We need to restore it back to the way Mance envisioned it. The world today could use Mance's wisdom. We need to be 1 nation of people. I miss Mance so much as his music speaks to me. God bless you and may Mance Lipscomb and Les Blank R.I.P. Love and prayers.
When I'm down I watch this and I can carry on. Thank you so much.
Nance and his wife were brought to a BBQ I had for my 25th birthday in Austin. He then went somewhere to perform! I was elated!
What a legend. If I'm 10% as wise at his age.ill rest happy!

When I was 13 or 14 I found Mance's version of Evil Heart Blues on Conversations With The Blues in the school music room when I was stuck in there on detention. Sent chills down my spine then and still does, probably changed my life in more ways than I realise.
I love this movie... it's from my home town of Navasota, Tx.

"The first thing you gon' do is like a person. Then you dwell with 'em, then you come to love 'em. Then you can share wit' 'em. But man, you don't, you don't have no fine relation, there ain't no love there."
