Cycling Up The Highest Paved Road in North America-Mt Blue Sky (Evans)

- Covid has ruined a ton of events, concerts, and sports this year, but one of the good outcomes (if you're a cyclist) is the closure of the road to the summit of Mount Evans. Dana and I decided to take advantage of this unique opportunity and pedal the 14 car-free miles.
This is the bike that we're riding, The Priority Apollo

We HAD to take advantage of this unique opportunity and ride up this beautiful mountain without the stress of cars whizzing past us. It was the perfect day, has anyone else biked up this mountain?
Yep! In July on a fatbike!😜🤙🏻
@@ElevationEveryWeekend That's almost as dumb as on a unicycle! I guess the ultimate stupidity would be on a fat unicycle! Ha, ha!
j/k (mostly)
PS This is how I look at fatbikes on anything but snow and sand, "Hey, how can we make riding a bike harder, heavier and generally less enjoyable? THE FAT BIKE!!! Given I can ride a 15 pound marvel of carbon engineering, I'd much rather pick a squishy, slow, terribly-handling excuse for a bike." Conundrum. I see people riding them on pavement and dirt and wonder why on earth the bike industry has spent so much time, energy and money making bikes, and wheels specifically, nice and light. Makes absolutely no sense.
Sorry, but the fad is over and for damn good reason!
Would you like to know how I really feel about fat bikes now? :) :) :) :)
Yup! Idaho Springs to the top! 1980 when I had the legs...
No video of the downhill?
Super cool video Ryan! I went a month ago with some friends from Boulder. It was amazing! This year, without cars, makes it very unique.
Dana is so cool! Love her energy and how reflective she is, we need more people like her in the world!
I agree!
Amen. I just turned 52 yesterday AND BECAUSE OF THIS CHANNEL….. I ran a half marathon on a whim by myself and hit the pain cave but…. I prayed and acknowledged everyone I was running for, everyone I loved, and I wanted to quit but I knew Ryan Van Duzer wouldn’t so I didn’t. I have military drill today and I’m hurting so I do recommend training a bit 😅. Thanks Ryan and Dana and everyone else on your channel. You have inspired me beyond belief! Age is a blessing ❤
Yes.Live life to the fullest. Every day is a blessing. I’ll have what Dana’s drinking
I rode this in 2008 from Evergreen. The tingling in my fingers due to lack of oxygen is something I'll never forget. For those worried about traffic, its pretty light and, cars going up are going pretty slow and all gave me space. On the way down, you can easily outpace the cars on all but a few sections, in fact, figuring out how to best pass the cars is the toughest part.
No cycling videos more inspiring than Van Duzer's!
Awe, thanks! That means a lot to me
I agree with Dana about BDays. I have earned those years. I'm proud of my age. I'd like to be in better physical shape and look like I did at 25, but I'm very proud to have made it as far as I have.
So happy you guys had no wind. When I did that ride with 2 friends in 1998 we started at the bottom at the Ranger Station at I-70 and when we got above timberline the wind was ferocious! We pushed on though and to this day that was one of my life's greatest experiences! So cool to relive it watching your video! Thank you!
What a crazy day you had, but those tough elements make for memorable experiences
I ordered the priority Apollo gravel bike a few weeks ago,can not wait to hear your review.
Stay safe and be blessed!
I’m looking forward to it as i preordered one as well
What a beautiful ride, Ryan! And you always pick the best cycling buddies!
I'm very fortunate to have Dana in my life!
Beautiful scenery. Haven't been to CO since 2000. And I live next door! Thanks for the video, loved it! I'm 62 soon and still cycling the Flint Hills.
Im 63 and just reviving my cycling career. Last 19 months with a new knee and up to 200 miles a week, feeling awfully grateful and good.
@@bradsanders6954 Wow that's incredible! I have a double hip replacement, and I only do a little over a hundred a week. You rock dude!
Dana is going to live another 59 years. Colorado offers so many outdoor healthy possibilities I can see why the people are so fit. Doing it all at altitude and keeping the old CV system in working order. It’s just impressive and a great place to experience life. Thanks again for sharing with a flat lander like me.
We could all use friends like Dana or Ryan in our lives. What a amazing way to spend a day! Much better views than my ride a couple days ago. Must say I’m a little jealous of Colorado’s landscape
Funny, for me as a "lowlands" guy from The Netherlands, I've actually been up Mt Evans (by car to be honest ...), a once in a lifetime experience. Must have been around the year 2000, a multi-day mobile devices congress in Denver. The last day (Friday), an English guy I met several times during the conference suggested we'd rent a car and spend the left-over Friday afternoon exploring the surroundings. So we did, visited Boulder (wat an awesome bike-friendly town), some authentic looking ''Cowboy town', ate Bison steak there and moved on to Mt Evans, what a treat! In Denver downtown it was 30 Celsius at that time, getting out of the car on a frozen lake near the top in the mist in my shorts was quite a contrast. But what an afternoon! although it was not on the bike,,, We even saw humming birds at a coffee stop halfway, I'd now love to relive that on bike 20 years later 😀
That sounds like a great way to spend a free day in Denver, glad you got to experience Mt Evans!

What an AWESOME day! I'm 60 and had prostate cancer surgery in June. For August, I finally reached 200 miles of road and mountain biking even though we had some 20 days over 110°, and am getting stronger and trying to do more each week. Love & Respect coming to you all from Phoenix, Arizona USA!
WOW! You're a monster, and your story is inspiring. Wishing you all the best. Happy trails
When we can travel again I'm coming to CO just to try and catch Dana to give her a huge hug. I'm glad you two have each other and that the world has the two of you.
It’ll be a hug fest!
WOW!!!! I mean WWWWOOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!
I'm sorry, but that's all I can muster at the moment.
And Dana, you rock girl!!!! Awesomeness is your middle name, I'm sure of it!!!
It sure is!! Dana Awesome!
Much love to you both! Seemed like a great day!
Putting this on my cycling list
What a gorgeous view!!!!!!! Low key jealous
Awesome thumbnail and drone shots! I really need to get one at some point! Good times!! Glad you got it in between firestorms!
Thanks! The drone made this video WAY more interesting
Ahhhh. Great video. I once drove from chico ca,to pikes peak, just to ride down it at 55mph in spots on mt bike, bikes werent allowed but I HAD to do it........then we went to Crested Butte for 2 days, and stayed for 5 . So Amazing..............then we went to Mammoth Mt and I raced the downhill and cross country............A duzer of a 2 week jaunt! Thanks Ryan!
Great video! Back in 2003 at age 55, on the Bike Tour of Colorado, I rode up Mt. Evans on my recumbent and loved it. Just me and the marmots. It was 32 degrees at the summit! The best memory is blazing down the mountain as a lightning storm approached. I hit 52 mph on my cyclometer on a smooth stretch, fastest ever...and then it happened...a stone flew in my mouth(passing car??) and it really hurt. Wait, that's no stone, it's a bee! It stung the inside of my cheek as my mouth was too dry to spit it out immediately. When I got back to 6000' feet and joined friends, they asked what happened as my right cheek was all puffed up, but I had the biggest crooked grin from the thrill of the ride! Your drone shots really add a lot. Got a DJI mini 2 earlier this year but haven't tried shooting while riding...yet! Look forward to it, though, as your videos inspire me to become a drone biker. Thanks do much!
Wow!! A bee in my mouth is my worst nightmare. Glad you have fun memories of that climb
Thanks for the professional and uplifting video! I rode up in September 1980 with a friend (ran it too in the early '70s) , but our experience was more typical for Mt. Evans weather. The summit was socked in. I had no gloves! Fingers froze. We had rain on the way down and my friend skidded off the road. I heard him yelling as I approached. Fortunately he was fine.
We totally lucked out with the weather!
The year, 1969, the summer of love. My vehicle, 1964 Chevy Impala, bright red hardtop. My reward, a bag of Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies enjoyed on those big stones on the brink at the highest point. A little cooler, though, and windy!
Loved this video Ryan!
Very cool, thanks for a trip back in time
I don't know if you watch much tv Ryan, seems like you might be a person that doesn't do that much tv with how much fun you have outside, but the music in this video was beautiful, it made me think of the show This is Us, which is a show about a family and it follows the family as they deal with realistic things that all families deal with in one way or another, it's a very emotional show, I've cried watching multiple episodes and scenes, some happy and some sad cries, it's all good.
This video made me just as emotional as the show, those views and the whole idea of being on top of that mountain with everything else being below you, is just incredible and makes you think about life. I can totally understand where Dana's head was at that moment because I had some of the same thoughts, though I imagine that it's nowhere near as much as actually being there.
You have a great day Ryan and Dana and to all your friends and family, you guys add so much happiness in this world and make the world a better place.
I haven't seen that show, but my mom tells me that it's amazing, and yes, pulls on the heartstrings. Maybe I'll find time to watch it this winter. Sending you big hugs from Boulder!
Dana is just radiant, beautiful, and charming at 29!
She sure is!
I really needed this today.
Thank you! 🙏
Glad I could provide!
I'm 63 and love my Texas bike rides!
Right on!
Can't wait for the bike review!
That Makes two of us!
What a great ride, impressive landscape, few people, no cars, just nature. Two weeks ago I rode the 2nd highest pass in Europe with my racing bike (Stelvio) 1000 motorcyclists, 1000 cars, that's the difference between Europe and America.
I climbed this in 2008 when I had Prostate Cancer. You should have carried you bike to the tippy top. Zman on top of the world on youtube.
Spectacular scenery and video production.
Thanks!!
I see that Dutch couple "Wheels to Wander" cycled the Ak-Baital Pass on the border of the Republic of Tajikistan (GBAO region) and Kyrgyzstan at an elevation of 4.655m (15,270ft) above the sea level. They were fully loaded too.
RYAN THAT WAS BREATHTAKING ! GLAD YOU BOTH HAD AN AMAZING TIME DOING THE 14 THOUSAND FOOTER & NO WIND TRYING TO WHISK YOU BOTH OFF THE MOUNTAIN . GORGEOUS WEATHER BEAUTY COLORS VIEWS SCENERY ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! THANK YOU ! ENJOYED !
You are AMAZING!!!.. I love your videos.. i love your way to share the LOVE FOR THIS WOONDERFUL LIFE.. I just finished a 60km hike, definitely le longest hike of my life.. my legs are sore.. but my heart and my mind are celebrating one of the best days of my life!!! YEAH RYAN! Keep on doing this!! 💪💪💪💪
Wow.. Impressive... Dana Great advice.. I'm 59.. Turn 60 in January.. I try to appreciate every day.. Cause you never know.. Thanks Ryan for all you do.. Your family...
Love to hear this my friend!
What great weather! I hope to do this ride when I visit Denver to see my first grandbaby, who is arriving tomorrow morning...
Congratulations!!!! So exciting. Enjoy Denver whenever you get here
By far, by faaar my absolute favorite video Ryan! WoW! Thanks for the great views man! Definitely putting this mountain on my list
Thanks!! This ride is so fun
Dana D is right! Thank you!
Got my Apollo on order and can't wait to get it.
Happy belated birthday, Dana!!!! 🎂🌟
True old age is a privilege that many do not get to experience. Never take your age for granted.
Well said
I was just looking at that bike. Can't wait for the full review. Enjoy the snow!!
It's getting cold already!
I preorderd the Apollo , I to am looking forward to Ryan’s review of it.
You two ROCK! Happy Birthday Dana!
Mt Evans was the first mountain I had ever been up, period. Had never before had that sort of view and seeing it again brings back some great memories. Thanks for making this video and spreading the positivity.
What a great day. Can't beat your riding partner for sure. What a beautiful climb. Take care and stay safe, Al
Even after cycling for 8 years all over Colorado and all over America, Mt Evans still is in my top 5 most beautiful rides I've ever done. It truly is a miracle that you had zero wind at the top, lucky!
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised at the top, such a beautiful day!
Too funny that I was going to ask how old Dana is...you ROCK 59 girl! You two are awesome!
Congratulations 👏 on cycling the highest paved road in North America!
It’s so fun up there
When I was a teeanager I remember driving up this road with my parents. Good times. It would be fun to bike it... or run it...
I’d love to run it sometime!
Amazing that you could breathe. Great video.
Absolutely stunning mountainscape .... would have like to seen the downward road too ... You and Dana are two awesome individuals
I drove that road twice when I lived in Idaho Springs about 20 years ago (1998-1999). I can't imagine biking up there, but least you did it with no cars. I also saw the mountain goats and bighorn sheep.
It was a dream without the cars
@@duzer And both times I drove up, it was chilly and really windy. I don't know if I ever experienced such a clear, warm & calm day, so high in the mountains, as you were able to enjoy.
Rode this last Sunday (9/6) and what a ride and so nice without cars. The views cannot be beat. I try to do this ride every year from Idaho Springs. Another great one is Pikes Peak, shorter but I think it’s a little harder. Thanks for posting this video!
Nice!! I need to make this an annual ride
Epic!! Marybeth and I put that on our list of must do rides.
It’s a beaut!!
I totally forgot about this video. Hey Ryan Great ride! I just got my Apollo Ground Control late November? I put it together but the snow kept me from riding. I finally took it to my local bike shop to get a quick safety check. I'm excited to get out there! I hope 2021 is a great year for you and your bikes!
Oh fun!!! I hope you get to ride that baby soon, I love mine!
Yeeaaaah Dana is back , beautiful nature, big blue sky , sunshine and great human beings, what more do you want !? Big dose of happyness right there , thank you ! 🌞🌞🌞🚵♂️💜
SO AWESOME! I think this is next on my list! I just did Mt. Lemmon, so this seems perfect for the next epic climb! 🙌
It’s worth it, so beautiful up there
@@duzer Hey! Do you have any recommendations for road bike rentals in Boulder? I guess the easiest way for a fellow non-driver to get to Mt. Blue Sky from there is to Uber it?
Great to see Dana, love her 11 pine shorts....awesome ride
Yeah, those blue ones are awesome!
@@duzer I agree I have a pair ...rode in them for a week in Montana
Ryan the unicycle commentary and the shot at 8:30 of the mountains are everything. Keep it going
Ryan, we have to talk about your, awesome, mantra, "No crashes, no flatties, no whammies!". You switch the order that you say them, randomly. We all want to chant the mantra with you when you say it, but we can't, because you aren't consistent in the order. Can we stick to the classic, alphabetically ordered one? Thanks, Ryan! Now, all together... "NO CRASHIES!, NO FLATTIES!, NO WHAMMIES!!!".
... That unicyclist up there was crazy, hilariously, awesomely random😂!
Ha!! Ok ok, I’ll try to get it right ;)
Wow I want to do this! Awesome video
Duzer you are and inspiration!
You are sooo tempting me to do this ride some day. It may very well kill me! Between the relentless climb and altitude... The one and only time I visited Mount Evans, by car, my altitude sickness was so bad that I literally felt like my head was going to explode. I was so weak and febrile that I couldn't even walk to the summit from the parking lot.
It's a very doable mountain ride because of the gentle grade, but the altitude can be an issue. Hope you make it happen someday!
Happy happy happy late birthday Dana. You guys are so tough pedaling up a 14er. I came up there from Texas (around 800' elevation) and at 11,500 I thought I would pass out. Hahahahaha I'm 5 years older than Dana. You both are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful state. Atb, Tony
Yeah, it's tough to go from sea level to THIS!
washingsoda turns any soap into a proper laundry detergent and if added to soap and shower water you can use less soap and rince with less water. vasilene smooshed onto cotton balls is the best firestarter.
Thanks for taking us on your adventures! You truly inspire us your viewers to “Get out There” and start having adventures and living life to the fullest! I cannot say thank you enough!
I appreciate that!! I love sharing these stories and pumping you up
You live in a beautiful country, Ryan.
What a great video and impressive scenery. I know you are both in top physical condition but surprised by how well you both did on the climb. By that, I mean not getting winded from the high altitude with lower oxygen levels.
Happy birthday Dana you're a legend. I live in Melbourne Australia and unfortunately are in stage four lockdowns and can only travel 5kms from home. Hopefully by summer we will be able to get out and about again and I might even start putting up some videos of my rides. Keep pedaling guys love your work, oh also love the priority bikes
Oh wow, I didn't realize that you are still on lockdown, hope you get to ride soon!
Car-less roads and plane-less skies was an amazing bonus of this spring. People turning into selfish assholes was not.
Rubber side down!
Amazing, figures you would manage to find these great silver linings with the pandemic going. Couldn't have picked a better riding partner for that mountain than Dana. Such positive energy. Can't wait to hear your thoughts and Dana's thoughts on the Apollo. Hoping the Apollo's Alfine 11 has the gear range needed for regularly getting up to see such fantastic views. Looks like a great option for us belt drive fans who can't afford Rohloff or Pinion.
I also enjoyed this great car less opportunity in 2020 up mt Evan's on a bike, great work to both of you and it reminded my of the fun adventure I also had 👍
Great mountain to climb. I'd love to ride it one day. Dana you ROCK!
YAY! The great Dana joins the adventure.
I ran up there via the single track on the 7th (with my pooch 🐕🦺). It was super windy. Glad your weather was more agreeable!
Now that looked fun! How was the downhill? You two have such an amazing friendship, the mutual admiration and respect is priceless! As were the smiles on your faces ;) Dana, 55 years young here and enjoying every day like it is a gift! I don't wait around for fun to find me, I get out there and make my own fun! And if one waits for the perfect time to get out there, don't wait because there is no perfect time and time passes too quickly. Thanks Ryan for your videos, the places I get to see from your videos is a constant reminder of the beautiful country we live in.
Well said!! Gotta get after it everyday
Thank you Ryan........thank you...! You are truly an exceptional , inspirational life inspiring , enjoyable person . Keep smiling , it looks great on you... Oh yeah... Dana is great and have enjoyed you both and your rides and you really appear to love each other's company... Ride on! My friend! T
Big shout out to you guys from BC.
My favorite ride is... in Colorado. I have to navigate through a jeep roads with lots of river crossing to get where I wanna go. The highest mountain peak crossed was 13 thousand feet. Colorado is a great place for long distance cycling
Good to see Dana again. Good morning to you guys. Beautiful views from the mountain journey. Is the air really thinner up there? Looks like you should be carrying oxygen bottles..... he he .....you guys look well and happy!!!! You know you’re getting up there when you pass mountain goats!!!! At that altitude you could consider it tundra....what was the temperature up there? Beautiful drone capture of the lake.... WOW what a windy road. Beautiful scenery from the top! Happy Birthday Dana, you’re still a young beautiful inspiring woman. Thanks you guys. Beautiful
Living in IL this had been a goal of mine for 25 years. After moving to AZ and getting good at climbing I finally was able to give it a go. I stayed nearby in Georgetown, but do to weather and time constraint I wound up deciding to drive to Colorado Springs to do Pikes Peak. I made it to 13,000ft riding in sleet which eventually forced me to to head back down :(
Yikes! Riding in freezing sleet is tough, but sounds like you made it pretty far up. Come back again sometime!
All your videos always inspire me to do my own shi-... little challenges! Thanks!
Go for it!
I can hardly wait for your evaluation of the new Priority Apollo Gravel Bike. It is what you think of the Shimano hub that I am interested in.
A unicycle?! Wow amazing!
I was shocked!
Check out Ed Pratt's ride around the world on a unicycle (if you haven't already :-)
@@slackerjo lol, I totally expected Ed to be the person on the unicycle!
@@duzer I know that unicyclist! She is, in fact, amazing. She unipacked the Alps a few years ago.
Dana is so incredibly cool, and a kickass cyclist!!!
Wow, so nice to have no cars and great weather! The first time I did it, we experienced it all. Rain, sleet, snow, clouds, poor visibility, Cold, cold, cold. Said I'd never do it again and then did it the following year! Have you ever tried Pikes Peak? I'm thinking if all the normal rides are cancelled again, I will pedal to Colorado Springs and ride it. Thanks for the video Ryan!!
I haven't ridden Pikes Peak, someday!!
Keep on being awesome!
I know this was a couple of years ago, but I would totally do this ride if I could. Looks like an awesome day!
It’s really beautiful! Come try it sometime!!
1968 & 1969 I worked at the Crest House / Curio Shoppe on top of Mt Evans. Do not think the Crest House is still in existence?? Anyway we had to live at the Crest House because of the altitude change and acclamation issues. It was a blast. Some beautiful weather and great times. Met lots of people.. Mt Evans used to be 14,267’ satellites and technology upped the elevation. Much has changed…. 😐😐 Hiked all over those rocks. Big Horn Sheep galore.
Oh wow!! That must have been an incredible place to work
Your content is getting better and better!
Thanks my friend! Trying to improve everyday
Feliz cumpleaños Dana 🎂. It’s super cool that you could enjoy the ride with no traffic at all. Take care Ryan, can’t wait for the next video. 👍🏼
There was a time in my life when there was no cars aircraft or people it was just me and my bike I always remember you got the climbing bikes nice!
Nice ride! Always great to see Dana, she's an inspiration.
I think so too!
That’s a great ride . I love the wildlife and not so much commercialized like Pikes Peak . I just road Pikes Peak you should try that one much steeper grade because the distance is not as much. I will be racing Mount Evans July 24
This is such a beautiful place. Added to the bucket list.
What an awesome ride. Well done to both of you. Way to go Dana!
WOW!!! Amazing!
