Some fun facts: if you’re read your rights you are 100% under arrest, and if you’re asked if you want a beverage, snack, cigarette, etc. its so that the police can collect a DNA sample to keep on file or compare with evidence! Interesting implementation into this game, very detailed!
I think the beverage offer is usually used to ingratiate themselves to the suspect. They certainly do use it for DNA on occasion, but they'll use it where that's not in play, too, to help build rapport. But if you're read your rights, it's 100% lawyer time.

Spoilers for video: Detective Yu is definitely a stand-in for the player, (you). You first "met" Lila on the menus, you're driven by the desire to learn more about her and understand "Who's Lila". We also learn events and things happening in the order Yu does. Also that first ending, I can't believe Manly didn't pick up on, "Dr Hades" but did on the river styx?
I've seen a ton of River Styx references in games and movies ,and books. The only Dr. Hades I can think of off the top is from Super Robot Wars. By the way, this is a very clever and deep game, refreshing even. But its based on a very specific set of beliefs that others like me in the Western World wouldn't really catch on to. Millenia old beliefs about God, Truth, Reality, Meaning. Its very old philosophy, and like all philosophy it comes down to interpretation. Lila is an actual thing, part of the eternal cycle where The Divine/God becomes The World, and the World returns to the Divine, and where Karma fuels The Lila, the Divine Play. You'll recall the bit about how Lila's father was "here" before ALL "reels". Because Lila is the creation of The Divine, and The World exists as The Divine sacrifices itself and then feeds. We're all shards of The Divine, but our own image of our "self" varies, the worth we put on who we are as individuals. Google "Lila". "Brahmin". ITs all pretty deep and not exactly set in stone.
lol, i started laughing when detective yu was talking about having to understand every little thing and feeling disappointed by misdirection because that's exactly how i feel when i play these games, that's when the irony of his character's name hit me, he's you!
I like how this game starts and the way everyone around the main character reacts to him, it kind of feels like he’s the bad guy, despite being the protagonist. Which is quite charming in a way and interesting.
A villainous protagonist. It's really not that far fetched, protagonist just means the main character, it doesn't assign any sort of morality to said character
i like that it's mainly the other characters' responses that clue you in, rather than the MC having ridiculous internal villain monologues. Obviously as time goes on and he accidentally smiles at the thought of murder, we get the idea, but the weird ambivalence near the beginning is great!
@@BooksandBuns Exactly, people often associate protagonist's as good and antagonists as evils..this isn't always how it is and it's nice to see once in a while a protagonist that's not good.

They did those since the beginning of the game is a tutorial now and a lot of folks complained they didn't understand the facial system on the feedback from what I saw.
As Manly said - I had to decide between the stronger impact of this scene for some players, while leaving others behind, or make it much less sudden, but make the mechanic clear for everybody. Chose the player's comfort at the end, which imo made the scene slightly less cool)

I’m so stoked to see this game. I can’t play it myself due to laptop issues but this game introduced me to the concept of tulpas and that idea alone invokes in me such a personal and unique type of fear. This game pushes so many buttons for me in an incredibly appealing way. It gets my mind racing not only about the plot, but about tulpas, the discussion around them, and the source of my own visceral reaction to this game and this concept. As an autistic person I am typically troubled by tropes of sociopathy being evidenced by a lack of facial expression. But this game is just too beautiful to look at, the obscured details of the art style can be so menacing yet so nostalgically comforting. Will’s calculating apathy makes the moments of calm seem so mundane that I almost forget about the horrific implications of the story I’ve just seen. the game is so truly compelling I just don’t have it in me to get caught up on my initial perception of an often ableist story trope. especially when it provides for what seems to me, to be a such revolutionary gameplay choice in controlling the PC’s facial expression. I really could go on for a while listing the things I love about this game. I haven’t felt this much aching suspense for a video game in a very, very long time. You’ve shown here a masterful command of narrative tone and I really do commend you for your work. Fantastic stuff
Hello dev, slight spoilers but wondering is there a concrete interpretation? Cause I have me theories but some conclusive “theres no real answer” will stop me from going insane
Being on the spectrum myself, the part about "practicing" facial expressions in the mirror to fit in with society hits close to home... I've had to do this myself, as nonverbal communication, for the most part, doesn't come naturally to me like it does to most people. I'm definitely going to have to check this game out
Yeah, that part in the mirror matches my own experience as well. I got officially diagnosed pretty late, and figuring out more about autism has helped recontexualize a lot of my current and childhood experiences, practicing facial expressions being one of them.
same here. the inability to control my tone and facial expressions or not knowing what face i'm making without practicing is something i struggle with a lot.
It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that I could not smile on command (like I was trying to whenever someone told me to smile for photos- then I go to the mirror to see what it looks like and damn am I bad at smiling 😭😭😭)
As someone who's had to study facial expressions to help with descriptive writing, I keep getting so frustrated when a face *almost* right and then he moves something the opposite way it should naturally go. XD There will be tiny differences based on secondary emotions, but it's really amazing to see how hard we have to think about the individual pieces of expression. It all comes so naturally to us, to have to remember whether or not the nostrils flare when scared, or whether the upper teeth or lower teeth get exposed in disgust... it's interesting and shows just how hard it must be for someone who has to think through each expression!
It's the opposite for me. I mean, I can make expressions naturally, but I relate to Will in the fact that I _can't fake_ an emotion when I need to. Like laughing along with someone so they don't feel awkward for not being funny, or pretending to have fun with a kid so they won't feel bad, & especially smiling in photos. I can't smile at will for the life of me, unlike other teens who take lovely selfies by just whipping out a Colgate smile... My face is always deadpan. "Huh? Yeah I'm having fun." "Wow." "Hahaha." Like that. But bc I like to people-watch (and also bc I draw sometimes), I learned what each muscle does for each emotion, along with how your tone should go. Which lead me to realise a true smile comes from the eyes. You basically squint the lower eyelids only, and even a tiny tug at each corner of the mouth will seem genuine. I can't always control 'em though, but I'm getting better at it. Seriously, Manly must be more anti-social than me if he can't know basic emotions: *Joy-* As said, lower eyelids pulled up, lip corners pointing upwards or showing upper teeth, may or may not raise eyebrows evenly. *Anger-* Wide eyes, pouted lips or showing bottom teeth with clenched jaw, brows pointing inwards. *Fear-* Wide eyes, mouth agape or with opened jaw, sad brows. *Surprise-* Similar to Fear, but with eyebrows pulled upwards. *Disgust-* Clenched jaw showing bottom teeth, evenly raised or sad brows, eye width depends on how disgusted you are. Tbh I wanna buy this game just to see the emotions I could create. There's so many: the "silently judging you" face, the "WTF", the "shut up shut UP", the speechless happy "rebooting" face, the "You joked about something I'm insecure about that was kinda funny, but also pls stop" glare... They're all universal somehow. I love that.
@@damien678 SAME when he kept trying to do the sad face but didn’t move the eyebrows I got frustrated lol. Literally eyebrows do so much for the face and expressions
Maybe it’s Lila who makes Will’s face suddenly change into different expressions. William himself says that he can’t make his own expressions without thinking about it in the beginning of the game. So the sudden expression changes don’t make sense if you leave out the fact that Lila takes control over him intermittently throughout the game. Perhaps fighting against the sudden expression is an example of William fighting against Lila. Just some thoughts
Probably the reverse though. William clearly is gone of his own body, the one in control is Lila, this even is confirmed by Detective Yu calling the protag Lila and the protag refering William as an different person than herself.
Manly's theory about how one of the endings has you rowing down the river Styx also carries some weight because one of the doctors that said you were very lucky for having survived the fall was called doctor Hades.
That one NPC dialogue was really on the nose about the themes of this game lol. The plot feels like "what if the Koomer tulpa possession blog went even more horribly wrong and "Oguigi" started murdering people?" Honestly I love it.
@@DarkRelm22 it was an old tumblr blog some person made to record their experiences with making a my little pony themed 'tulpa' (aka an imaginary friend). Oguigi is what they named their tulpa. 1:19:12 Lila getting angry at Yu telling her she envies humans. Lila literally at the beginning of the game (0:40) "I envy other people. They make faces naturally"
Honestly I took a little look at tulpamancy after checking out this game and it seems like r/tulpas is just tulpas spending pretty much all their time insisting theyre just as real as actual humans and not saying much else so this tracks 😬
One of my favorite horror games. The whole vibe is just so eerie and captivating. I love the soundtrack/background music and how the facial system isn’t just a useless gimmick, but actually affects the outcomes based off what you do and the order you do it. One of the only games I bought and keep playing through for each secret, this game has really stuck with me and I think about it a lot.
Holy shit. This went from somewhat Lynchian in the demo to a straight up homage in the full version. Literally hiding in the closet while commenting on the blue velvet poster on the wall, lmao. I love it, honestly. I've been looking forward to the full release so this is pretty hype.
I feel lucky to have experienced this with everyone here. The world must have so many other unique experiences like the one here, that we'll never even know exist. A little plus to getting old I suppose.
i think there's something to be said about how facial expressions can evoke such strong, visceral bodily reactions from others. it's such an innately human trait, and its utilized perfectly in this game, whether Will's reactions are affecting his environment or the players themselves. the mechanism really strikes at my core and disturbs me on such a primal level... which imo exceeds all expectations for the horror genre.
I think about this game pretty routinely. This is a series I come back to re-watch regularly at this point. I can't explain why but I love it so much. The way you play it coupled with what this game does and how it does it just really sticks with me. Love this.
_Jeez that smile tho_ It's the face moving too much. Funny how we mostly see subtle movements, the only time we exaggerate is with extraordinary emotions irl. I'm looking forward to seeing this whole game & what I'm sure is a pretty twisted story. And you're the best at getting endings! Addition: I'm laughing not at the game itself - the game is very psychologically cool looking at what is the self & how do we know. It's the commentary from MBH - like talking with the police and using that _smile._ "This'll throw 'em off, they'll never see this coming". A little troll humor suits this game perfectly.
Here we go 😁 Also, I love how when Will was falling from a building, he doesn't react 🤣 now I am just picturing him falling to his death while he looks bored. "Oh no. I'm going to die. Meh."
I think the interrogation contains actual police tactics and stuff, I recognise some patterns between recorded police interrogations I've seen and and how the police officers acted.
@@thenextgeneration9030 They call me Detective "Lazyboy" Malone. Some here at the precinct wear expensive suits. Me? Nothing but the most comfortable recliners will do.
I think that us, the players, are portrayed by Detective Yu (or perhaps even "You"), who wants to understand every ending and the story behind the character, meanwhile Lila just tells us that none of the endings are the "true" ending, and she (or he) asks us if it even matters in the first place. So yea, this is pretty obvious but I just wanted to point it out. I think the instance with Yu *may or may not be* a place where you can learn more about Lila and the endings, to satisfy your curiosity.
I love how much work was put in it and how polished it eventually became. It seemed really hard to get the right expression then, now it's not a big deal.
Going off all the Dharmic references, I'd say the name "Lila" is a reference, too: "Within non-dualism, lila is a way of describing all reality, including the cosmos, as the outcome of creative play by the divine absolute (Brahman). In the dualistic schools of Vaishnavism, lila refers to the activities of God and his devotee, as well as the macrocosmic actions of the manifest universe"
To be specific, Lila is the Divine Play. The Play is fueled by Karma, aka human actions and decision. The Divine sacrificed itself to make The World. And The World returns to the Divine, and the many manifestations of The Divine and Lila are pretty much impossible for us to discern. That is why so much focuses on who and what we all are, what is and isn't real, ect. In the end, you become a willing part of Lila with your sense of "self" and knowledge of Lila intact. Or, you get completely gobbled up by The Divine, just to re-entered The World in one of many near endless forms The Divine ends up taking. EDIT: For instance, a steam engine or boiler monster! lol
this game is amazing and as someone that reads tarot, the cards are definitely an accurate representation to the endings 😭 like wow they really did their big one with this!!!
Ok, that second assbeating you got by Mike was on Martha. Will calmed the situation down, more or less, Mike wouldn't have gotten physical. But then Martha commented "He's just trying to provoke you", which is a line no stereotypical jock can hear without getting violent :P
I hate how he keeps throwing, basically it's just "Hey, your best friend fucking died" * The most disturbing and vile grin you've ever seen, reminiscent of the Grinch* Omg that's so sad
Manly making the "wrong" facial expressions gives me so much anxiety (i say wrong in quotations because there is no right or wrong way to play the game but i wouldn't personally play it this way)
Will Clarke’s face and behavior kinds reminds me of Will Bettelheim from You. Both seem normal and charming at first, but gradually reveal themselves to be psychopathic murderers as the story progresses. Their faces are also eerily similar.
I was confused on why this kept getting recommended to me since I had already watched him play the demo, assuming that this was the same video, so excited the full version is here! One of the most creative horror game ideas ive seen
This game is exceptional thus far; truly multi-faceted in its presentation, gameplay, and narrative. If I were to venture a premature assessment of the title and its concomitant query, I would say that the question of “who’s Lila” is more metaphysical than literal, which delves into the subject of personal identity and the malleability of self. Thematically, the inability to perceive oneself fully and the transience or adaptability of the ego is represented through Will, a man whose conscious personality changes depending on the situation and who he interacts with. To Will, his tulpa, or independent, sentient identity, is just as conscious and real as Will himself, since the “self” is merely a construct that exists within the mind, incapable of perceiving itself objectively. His tulpa is Lila, who apparently has a predilection for murder, and whose ego is just as capricious, as Lila, too, emotionally manipulates those around them by altering their personality and reactions in accordance with societal norms and expectations. I believe through the course of this game and its endings, we should come to some sort of better understanding as to the distinctive memories and deeper, subconscious personality traits which define Will and Lila. I loved the incorporation of the user interface within the game itself, allowing Yu to essentially represent “You” the player, aware of the branching timelines, and desiring to understand every facet of this narrative and, through this uncovering, also find out more about Will/Lila. It’s an exceptionally creative and unique manner of discussing the endings and meditating on their contribution to the overarching query of what happened to Tanya and who, really, is Lila. I really can’t wait to see the rest of this game and discuss it with everyone! It’s an incredibly fecund story for interpretation, speculation, and even philosophizing, so I truly feel it was made for people like me haha
Nicely written, in my case I am fascinated by how the people around the protagonist don't seem to recognize clear signs of mental illness coming from the protag They speak to him as if he was a normal person and get angry, confused or frustrated at the protag when his mental illness does not allow him to react in a normal way, they even lash out at him sometimes Something that is a real issue for many actual mental illness patients, the lack of education among many people causes them a lot of problems in life, and it is a major cause of why many actual murderers are mentally ill patients Many times no one ever tries to educate them on their own conditions, or the people around them, leaving them to fend for their own, lost and confused in their own minds never knowing why
If we keep going off Buddhist or Hindu analogies, if Lila is anything, it's probably Mara or one of his daughters, representing unsatiable, destructive desire (Lila does say s/he is hungry and wants to feed) that takes over a person until they're not themselves anymore. Will's name is definitely symbolic, though, considering all this talk about destruction of self. Self. The I. Ego. Will. Geddit?
I like Yu's part in this, and I also like that, at the end of the day, we're not the true ones puppeteering him, it's Lila, a Tulpa. *of the woman he truely loved*
So incredibly excited to see this released in full!! I was immediately enthralled by the demo alone, it's just such a unique concept. The blend of photorealism and the horrifying way the expressions are manipulated is so unsettling but really fascinating- I feel like this would've fit right in on a touchscreen console like the Nintendo DS. I can't wait to see how deep it goes!
It helps that the face mechanics are both really good and *really* janky at times. Him getting his ass beat by Mike that second time was bc the game misread his frown as a smile.
Such a cool idea! Controlling the character's facial expressions as the character tries to express their true emotions. This was implemented so well. Seeing Manly struggle to conceal the true facial expression shows this delightfully Using a map directions app as the map overview UI is clever! The unnerving dialog the MC lets out sometimes is so cake. The effect of always having the MC face onscreen while killing is ridiculously distressing. It reminded me of a horror movie I once heard about, where the entire film was a splitscreen which one side was the killer's POV. Detective Yu portion is just great. So intriguing! I think remember the dev mentioning neural network when commenting about this game. Although it is something I know little about, I wonder if there interesting pathways beyond the base facial expressions and the routes represented in the tarot tree.
Wasn't that a game? The one where it was a split screen with one side being the killers POV? I could be wrong, maybe there was a movie and a game that used the same thing but idk.
@@ranimeRAT Yeah, that looks like the game I was talking about. I remember there being side-by-side screens at some point, one with your POV and the other with the monsters POV, but the last time I watched anything about this game was like a decade ago so I'm probably just misremembering.
I am a 30 year old man and this was the first time in almost 20 years years that I had to EXIT the game for being terrified like a child. The way this game plays with our psyche is borderline sadistic. Probably one of the best horror games out there. Brilliant.
This is such a weird but interesting game, not my type of game to play but something I really enjoyed watching! Never seen much games like this, and while the facial expressions are a bit unnerving, they also most of the time made me laugh so hard. But listening to you read it all while watching this interesting gameplay, made me feel so relaxed!
@@tanujak98 it's also difficult for me to understand, but it's something at the intersection of mysticism and spirituality...its like using your willpower and focus to create something, I guess like an imaginary friend that you invest in over time and it becomes as real as you and I. I don't believe it personally that's why it's difficult for me to grasp the concept.
@@pelliorosh You got it pretty close! Tulpa is just another person you share your brain with, that you also made yourself. They can control the body (only if you let them), or you can also hallucinate (?) them, just like in the game Will did when talking to Lila in in the fool ending. They can be pretty nice company, if you know what you are doing, but I also know a lot of stories, when it went really wrong, so you need to be EXTREMELY careful.
One of the best horror premises I've ever seen and a rock-solid social damage control mechanic, the only complaint is the "casual" Eastern philosophy lecture was a bit heavy-handed even by Lynchean standards. Be confident in the audience's ability to figure stuff out on their own, especially with highly specific stuff like tulpas being mentioned
Holy shit, they actually went into the perceiver question of existence... that's some high-level philosophical shit that hardly ever comes up in Horror, even though it belongs in there, and they did a GREAT job of it!
Played for a few hours. There’s a lot of lore and secrets. I’m excited to see what more I can find and I can’t wait to see your completed experience :) Sometimes it gets a little repetitive when you have to play the same scenarios to get different outcomes but the faster dialogue is helpful. I think I need to make more of my own customs saves maybe? I’m still figuring it out. As always thanks for sharing!!!
I feel like detective Yu is kind of stand-in for what player perceive and what is expected of us to think, based on the Justice card exchange Yeah, and the Judgement card does really imply that Yu got the power to look at all the endings, and the comment about willing to see everything really hits close to home
Idk if anyone’s said this yet, but as an autistic person, I’m glad the game now tells you what expression you’re showing. This game would’ve been very difficult for me otherwise, since many expressions depicting “negative” (sad, scared, surprised) emotions are quite similar irl (at least the way I do them)
Same here!! My face is usually very neutral or sometimes "angry" to other people so i would genuinely be confused in this game when making expressions.
intresting gameplay, i like when the face muscle move without player controlling it, could have been better if there is not a warning ...it would add so much creepines
Just gonna say right now i've been really looking forwards to this game since i've seen you play the demo. It's crazy how rare of a concept this is with games and i can't wait to see where this'll go! (at least the "simulate an emotion" through molding the face, not messing with one's face in general).

I know a Dr Hell from Super Robot Wars, but no Dr Hades.
lol, i started laughing when detective yu was talking about having to understand every little thing and feeling disappointed by misdirection because that's exactly how i feel when i play these games, that's when the irony of his character's name hit me, he's you!

They're referring to the additional dialogue that warns you you're about to do so.

Just finished watching it. Great experience, will (no pun intended) buy it when i get the chance.
Amazing :) I caught that while playing :) Loving the details! Great game!!!!

I got officially diagnosed pretty late, and figuring out more about autism has helped recontexualize a lot of my current and childhood experiences, practicing facial expressions being one of them.
same here. the inability to control my tone and facial expressions or not knowing what face i'm making without practicing is something i struggle with a lot.

that was my first thought too lmao, like "wait is this autism simulator" or something
It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that I could not smile on command (like I was trying to whenever someone told me to smile for photos- then I go to the mirror to see what it looks like and damn am I bad at smiling 😭😭😭)

This man has such great control over his facial expressions to create such horrifying normal facial expressions
Lila and Tanya could be sisters twin but got separated at birth now it make sence here😮(just a theory😅)
The pole at 32:11 sometimes plays morse code
Edit: it translates to "Lila is the mystery of not knowing who Lila is"
As someone who's had to study facial expressions to help with descriptive writing, I keep getting so frustrated when a face *almost* right and then he moves something the opposite way it should naturally go.
I love Manly but it annoyed the Hell outta me. Like ffs Manly don’t make those damn eyebrows go DOWN grrrrrr 🤦🏻♀️
as a visual artist, I cannot tell you how frustrating him not touching the eyebrows as much was!! like pls they're so important to expressions!!!
Yes the eyebrows make so many of the expressions and he wasnt touching them 😭 he probably got it down in the other episodes
Seriously, Manly must be more anti-social than me if he can't know basic emotions:
*Joy-* As said, lower eyelids pulled up, lip corners pointing upwards or showing upper teeth, may or may not raise eyebrows evenly.
@@damien678
SAME when he kept trying to do the sad face but didn’t move the eyebrows I got frustrated lol.
I noticed that too
I love how Manly makes almost all his first chances as antagonistic as possible.

One of my favorite horror games. The whole vibe is just so eerie and captivating. I love the soundtrack/background music and how the facial system isn’t just a useless gimmick, but actually affects the outcomes based off what you do and the order you do it. i think there's something to be said about how facial expressions can evoke such strong, visceral bodily reactions from others. it's such an innately human trait, and its utilized perfectly in this game, whether Will's reactions are affecting his environment or the players themselves. the mechanism really strikes at my core and disturbs me on such a primal level... which imo exceeds all expectations for the horror genre.
I love that half pf the game is like "Hey Lila babe please chill for a hot second"

It's the face moving too much.

I love how much work was put in it and how polished it eventually became. It seemed really hard to get the right expression then, now it's not a big deal.
Going off all the Dharmic references, I'd say the name "Lila" is a reference, too:
"Within non-dualism, lila is a way of describing all reality, including the cosmos, as the outcome of creative play by the divine absolute (Brahman).
EDIT: For instance, a steam engine or boiler monster! lol

this is so well done omg that murder scene was so shocking, just amazing
Verbose comments indeed.
Nicely written, in my case I am fascinated by how the people around the protagonist don't seem to recognize clear signs of mental illness coming from the protag
They speak to him as if he was a normal person and get angry, confused or frustrated at the protag when his mental illness does not allow him to react in a normal way, they even lash out at him sometimes
Something that is a real issue for many actual mental illness patients, the lack of education among many people causes them a lot of problems in life, and it is a major cause of why many actual murderers are mentally ill patients
Many times no one ever tries to educate them on their own conditions, or the people around them, leaving them to fend for their own, lost and confused in their own minds never knowing why
Self. The I. Ego. Will. Geddit?
Dang, I just commented the same thing and I scrolled down and saw this comment lmao, but you explained it so well!!!

This was implemented so well. Seeing Manly struggle to conceal the true facial expression shows this delightfully
Using a map directions app as the map overview UI is clever!
The unnerving dialog the MC lets out sometimes is so cake.
The effect of always having the MC face onscreen while killing is ridiculously distressing. It reminded me of a horror movie I once heard about, where the entire film was a splitscreen which one side was the killer's POV.

finally the game is out! super excited to watch you play it :)
Yeah the demo didn't have a warning (to my knowledge at least), I remember audibly getting creeped out about it
I think the devs adjusted it because a lot of players didn't fully understand the expression system.
Manly explained above that many were confused by it.
It literally only happens once and people act like it ruins the game.
@@smtandearthboundsuck8400 I think it's neat
I'm gonna be honest, i clicked originally because I thought this was a jerma edit. Sick video though, dude!
Just gonna say right now i've been really looking forwards to this game since i've seen you play the demo. It's crazy how rare of a concept this is with games and i can't wait to see where this'll go! (at least the "simulate an emotion" through molding the face, not messing with one's face in general).
