That was part of his deal when he left NBC. Since they broke the contract with him with the Tonight Show. They had to let him go on his terms. And part of that was keeping all of his content.

It’s weird to not hear as many laughs. But you can tell he was a lot more insecure. I think his confidence and not caring what anyone’s thinking attitude is what makes everything 10 times funnier today.

yeah even his own audience seems lost at his humor... barely any laughs at his subtle genius comedy, was was ahead of his time for sure.
Why is Conan older in 1997 than in 2019?
He looks way younger here. In the current show you can see he has a lot more wrinkles and spots.
I think what you are looking at is the development of makeup and cinematography techniques
