  • Not just any Bach Stradivarius, a replica of 1962-1, the Strad used for President Kennedy's Funeral. I was commissioned to build it by MSgt Jari Villanueva. This video shows him playing it and how I built it.

Beautiful sound! Of course Yari could make a garden hose and funnel bugle sound good too...

With my eyes closed, I couldn't tell the difference.
The construction section was fascinating. That kind of precision would drive me crazy. I salute you.

It blows my mind that you can do this without a wire EDM, which would mean making everything out of some sort of metal. Amazing artisan work! Do you know Barry Baugess? He makes baroque trumpets. You really do amazing work!!!

This was one of my first "pitch perfect" instruments. The trumpet was an earlier attempt to build one where I learned a lot about sound production. It's not really worth having a professional play it. Someday I will get back into making instruments and will do a pitch perfect trumpet and get a professional to play it.

This is fantastic, I loved getting to see a detailed walkthrough of your process!
Have you worked out a good method for constructing air-tight valves yet, or are they simply too complex to be feasible?
Have you worked in or considered working in any medium other than wood?

So you could get a professional to play this one, but not the wooden trumpet?

Did you ever think about getting a solid piece of wood for the bell, and shaping it on the lathe. You could use a template of the outside profile and the inside profile to check the shape

I have now seen several instruments made and played by you. I am both in awe and jealous as hell! I think I need to learn some wood working techniques from you! So, got any interest in building a Bb Coronet? Did I miss it? Just out of curiosity, what was the cost of this beautiful instrument (I'm a Prior Marine and would love one as well).

The saxophone also needs octave keys that are not totally automatic. This would enable a few harmonics that are not possible with automatic octave keys. This would help make those harmonics to be even softer and probably give an even more French sound. Wishful thinking.
