+artbargra Exactly. Especially if you think that Winter Soldier is part machine and is fighting his artificially created character with his soul. Music describres the fight of man vs machine
It always baffles me when people say Bucky was the 'villain'. That implies personal motivation, choice, autonomy. Bucky Barnes has none. He's a prisoner of war, brainwashed into total obedience by HYDRA. The level of psychological and physical abuse that he goes through is absolutely heartbreaking. There are several instances in the movie were he's almost childlike, confused and vulnerable. He's a threat yes, but a villain? Hardly. HYDRA is the villain. Pierce is the villain. Bucky Barnes is a victim of torture, brainwashing, and intense abuse. He has been broken down into a tool, and is no more a villain than the guns HYDRA uses. Terms like "anti-hero" and "villain" don't fit because that implies choice. The first choice Bucky made since he fell off that train was to save Steve's life when they fell into the Potomac. Whenever I hear this song, it breaks my heart. People interpret the screams that continue throughout the song as the screams of the Winter Soldier's victims. Frankly, I think it's Bucky himself. The Winter Soldier is an incredibly sad, tortured character. Calling him a villain does him and Sebastian Stan a grave disservice, since it dramatically over-simplifies an incredibly complex character.
Well spoken. Bucky is an amazingly developed character. And when he becomes the soldier. You are forced to see that all die. And nothing is left but his shell, and the metal arm that pulls the trigger.
TrollfestMaghee Early on in the song, that repetitive sound? I guess it can be interpreted in a lot of ways; some hear sirens, others hear screams. I hear a child screaming and interpret it as Bucky screaming, because Bucky's been just whittled down to this very sad, child-like state of vulnerability even while he's this terrifying threat to Steve and Nat. There are a lot of little moments in Sebastian Stan's performance that make Bucky seem childlike as the Winter Soldier, even as he was extremely deadly, and the scene with Pierce...
wee-chlo Sounds like a child whistling/whooing. Like a ghost trapped in a capsule. I had to raise the volume up xD. Yeah it definitely sounds like a child struggling.
Yeah, to me it sounds like a child screaming. And they play that sound EVERY TIME THEY MENTION THE WINTER SOLDIER, so with my interpretation, it makes everything that much more painful...
0:15 is confirmed by the russo brothers to be a distorted bucky scream from when he died, they made it sound more mechanical because he's "basically a cyborg"
Just cause it's a nine movie contract doesn't mean he's in 9 movies confirmed; it's mean he's just legally contracted to nine. It means they can put him in up to 9 movies.
yeah this movie soundtrack wise was amazing (except for guardians of the galaxy) but I'm more existed about civil war in an actual movie but really every marvel movie is amazing
The screeching noises in the beginning are Bucky his screams from when he fell off the train in the first movie, but edited so it sounds like a robot, to "mention" the fact that he is now partly robotic
lemme break it down •0:20 is bucky screaming when he falls from the train •0:25 is steve calling out to bucky •1:20 is "im with you till the end of the line •2:23 is him on the motercycle on december 16 1991 (edit: a lot of y’all are saying this could also be the machine thats used on him which could also be true!) •the beats around 4:07 could be him fighting steve and then steve triggering a flashback •6:23 is him jumping into the river to save steve
You know you're a terrifying badass when Black Widow, one of the deadliest and most effective assassins in the world, is terrified of you. This theme helps immensely too.
This is awesome because it really represents how utterly TERRIFYING the Winter Soldier is. Like that bit when he's pursuing Natasha was chilling to the core. This music as he stalks after her, was thrilling but horrifying at once; I have never been so intimidated by a character before until then.
I am prone to anxiety attacks. When I saw this movie for the first time, which was premiere night, I had an acute anxiety attack. He is so intimidating and terrifying. If the Soldier was ever after me, I would just kill myself. I don't think I could ever go through what Steve and Natasha went through.
Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that! Although that's bad and I am sorry that you went through that, it shows just how good the character's portrayal was. He is a very horrifying character. You see, I have a morbid fascination with villains, and I have become obsessed with all kinds of them (from The Joker to Loki, from females to males) and NONE of them have scared me like Bucky did. And for me to also be attracted to Bucky (and of course Sebastian Stan), it was a wild experience to say the least!
Definitely. The crying moaning that sounds like a siren at the beginning is really haunting, and is also an accurate reflection of the Winter Soldier and his oppression as a result of Hydra's involvement with him. For me, the word would be: Haunting.
I know, I love Bucky and the Winter Soldier. The scene where he's having his memory temporally wiped was awesome. You could feel his pain, god what an awesome actor. The costume was perfect as well. So frickin intimidating :)
The Winter Soldier was so goddamn amazing. He was terrifying in his ferocity. He had no sense of self-preservation. He was like a juggernaut, a freight train--he came after you with intensity, with complete focus, with manic energy. He had no magic hammer, no flying suit, no alternate forms----he was just like, a silent menace. Everything about him said menace, even though he had hardly any lines. And yet, when he's not being directed, he was docile, childlike vulnerable. It all came down to that moment when Pierce had no fear in striking him across the face. The Winter Soldier could kill Pierce in fifteen different ways--just with his hands. But he was so broken, so controlled, so much a tool--that Pierce didn't fear him. That is the real tragedy of the Winter Soldier. He was no villain--he was a tool. He was broken down until hardly anything remained. Nothing mattered until given a directive. No choices. No emotions. Numb. Imagining the terrors, horrors, miseries, he must have endured at the hands of Hydra is sickening. Until one day, on a broken highway, a man he used to know said a name he used to be. And that name held so much meaning that it couldn't be completely wiped away but buried deep to protect it. His one last remaining lighthouse, hidden in the fog. Until his best friend managed to light the lamp. And even when they wiped him again and started over---and we see his terror of the chair but his helplessness to obey and allow them to scramble him again--all it took was that name. Uttered by that guy. And it widened the crack. And in the end, he may not even have understood the compulsion--but he dove after Cap into the river and pulled him out. And then, in his confusion, left him there. It's almost just as heartwrenching when he goes to the museum and reads about his own life long after it happened. Not to mention that "man on the bridge" who said the one thing that could pull him out of the Winter Soldier's shell. And he will eventually have to come to terms with the things he's done. Like Bruce is in constant conflict about the Hulk---Bucky will be in constant conflict about the Winter Soldier. How the Winter Soldier and Bucky Barnes were handled in this movie was masterful. I literally, can't wait for Cap 3. I was so hoping there would be a cameo or reference or something in Ultron--but besides the one comment Sam Wilson makes--there's nothing. Sebastian Stan showed everything and told almost nothing. He was truly amazing in this role.
The sounds in this track sound like the screams of souls being tortured in Hell....suitable for Bucky/The Winter Soldier after all he's been through, don't you think?
If they made a winter soldier movie: Screentime: 90% of the film Number of lines spoken: 10 and it would still be an amazing movie, if they don't screw up the story.
I think that is what makes the winter soldier so terrifying. He doesn't talk or ambles while the hero sits and tries to get out of handcuffs. He executes his mission with efficiency as fast as possible. And he will use any means necessary to accomplish his end-goal. He truly is a master assassin.....
Love music like this. Henry Jackman really understood what kind of guy The Winter Soldier is. His theme is nightmarish and manic, it works like a charm.
I get chills hearing this. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is by far the best and darkest film in the MCU. There was no comedy, little humor, fast-paced action scenes, and characters dying in gruesome ways.
TWS must be the darkest MCU movie indeed. One factor might be that it deals with real stuff, like corruption inside an organization, a political thriller as they called it. While there's humor like any Marvel movie, it is mostly overshadowed by the serious plot. And of course, I can't forget about Bucky, from the disturbing things Hydra did to him to this theme.
You know, when hearing this song, it starts out eerily calm before suddenly becoming intense. In a way, it really reflects the Winter Soldier's appearances as a whole. He comes from nowhere, makes a show of his assassinations, and then vanishes again, as suddenly as he appeared. It really scares me, to be honest.
This is probably one of the best character themes used in a Movie since the 90's it actually captures everything that is Bucky and The Winter Soldier. The Scrambled Memories, the Screams of the Buried Horrors trying to surface, the Soviet-like Technological theme and the longer the song goes on the Clearer the Screams become to show how the brainwashing degrades the longer he is out of cold storage. Perfect.
This theme represents the Winter Soldier's character perfectly. It starts out almost silent, with a single note in the background that sounds almost like a man screaming in the distance, representing Bucky being broken by Hydra's experiments as they aim to weaponize him and make him into a Super-Soldier and assassin of their own. Then as the techno/dubstep sounds kick in, it represents Bucky's transformation. As the music becomes louder, it represents him as he is now: The Winter Soldier. Now he's the ultimate assassin. A nearly unstoppable killing machine who will complete his mission by any means necessary.
Imagine you're a random soldier out on a early morning patrol, there's a thick fog making things hard to see, as you and your squad move on with the patrol it gets thicker and thicker, then there's several gunshots and explosions, you get separated from the squad and you hear them being killed off one by one, then you turn and see HIM the Winter soldier, it's the last thing you ever see.....
+Canadian bajur red hood was trained by batman, however most of batmans methods revolve around not killing and more on causing injury. As well Jason Todd was often described as reckless and a hothead. The winter soldier on the other hand is ruthless and unrelenting and was trained for years to be one of the worlds greatest assassins. As well he has a bionic arm which would make winning a fistfight with him difficult for a normal guy like Jason and if we're going by movie version is also a super soldier. A more even matchup might be death stroke vs winter soldier.
I love you can hear every little details the wind of the mountains/while Bucky was falling, Steve's scream getting further and further, the mechanic sounds, the motorcycle, and over all the scream and the pain Bucky has gone through. This piece is so well produced even if it creeps me out I can't help but listen to it
Not terribly memorable in any case, at least not like this. Iron Man and GOTG benefited from having licensed songs, and the former was also allowed to have - god forbid - a rock-based soundtrack. But literally all the the rest has just descended into fairly standard orchestral mush. Does it make the films cohesive? Sure. Does anything beyond this stick out as much as say, the instantly recognisable Danny Elfman Batman soundtrack, or the main Batman theme for the Nolan trilogy?
Yeah Marvel chooses pretty Terrible composers. They should get people like Hans Zimmer,John Ottman,Trent Reznor,Marco Beltrami,Harry Gregson Williams,Junkie XL,and personally IMO Steve Jablonsky. The only good composers that they chose were Alan Silvestri,Ramin Djwadi, and Michael Giacchino.
I first watched this 7 years ago when I was 10 years old. My appreciation for this film was through the roof and still is. Probably my favorite marvel film.
The fact that this is made from Bucky's scream just chills me... but at the same time it's comforting. Even though the Winter Soldier had tried to kill and bury Bucky, he's still there. But he's in pain.
@@TheAdvertisement you did in your first comment Sherlock. You said it was Sebastian's voice when the literal composer of the theme confirmed it wasn't. Maybe try to not be so snarky next time
*The scarier thing about this theme is that Henry Jackman actually made those Screech noises by using the screams of Bucky when he was falling to his death in the first film.*
This is, to this day, one of the only few (less than seven) Marvel villains I truly feared. This theme, the fact that he’s a ruthlessly efficient killing machine, the fact that pain doesn’t even do anything outside of annoying him, everything.
can NOT get over this song. i loved the effect it had in the movie as well. it added to the absolute terror that was the winter soldier. he was fucking brutal compared to all the other villains so far and it was great. so great.
Bucky isn't a villain but rather a victim of abuse. Still, I have to agree about the music! This Winter Soldier theme definitely added to how frighteningly strong he was during his fight scenes, it gives you chills!
This truly captures the essence of the Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier is an infamous legend. A myth. A ghost. The Winter Soldier is part machine, part supernatural beast. He's a monster appearing from the smoke, with no remorse or mercy, only an objective. And this perfectly captures his character. The first part is an eerie symphony, representing the ghost, the supernatural myth of The Winter Soldier. The beast appearing in the fog. A thing that is only spoken of in whispers. The halfway point represents the machine. The cold, mechanical, efficient killer. The part that approaches a target, unfeeling and focused on nothing but assassination. Henry Jackman did this film justice with the soundtrack.
Unfortunately we even saw that the winter soldier in the hydra base wasn’t like a killer at all. He was docile, and the scariest part was that this is someone that was broken down in tourture, a machine that can kill you with his hands, and has no care for preserving himself he didn’t even try anything when Pierce decided to strike him
i....found out.....just now......that the winter soldier theme is actually bucky's scream from when he fell from the train.... distorted to resemble a mechanical sound..... but.... a human scream..... his voic-
It portrays the fear that is felt by his enemies when he manifests before them. Especially that point when he just appears in front of Fury on the road and just blows up his car. He just appears and claims his lives and slips away unseen
I just love that the theme sounds kinda like screams, it gives you chills down your spine when it comes on each time the Winter Soldier comes on screen, and you almost feel like he's just some kind of unstoppable mythical entity... Also, each time I hear it, it's like the "sreams" represented every single of the Winter Solider's victims, which comes back to Civil War's plot, in which that takes a whole other dimension. Man I love this movie.
I kinda always saw the screams as representing Bucky, helplessly screaming inside his own head, while his body is used and abused by Hydra. But, then again, I guess Bucky Barnes is the Winter Soldier's first victim.
Except that the person this theme is directed to DOESN'T have intebtion, but rather the "intentions" he have were more of the Nefarious Corporation's demands

Lol made me watch the Winter Soldier again. I dig the military snare and the Bebop style overtones.
I was so pumped when I heard this theme! Buck is a badass!! 🦾
HOW DO YOU KNOWWWWW
They did???
I dont' get it. Critics didn't like this OST, because of "overuse of electronic sounds". What the hell are they talking about? It's perfect for a character like the Winter Soldier.
+artbargra I don't get it either. This sound track was so intense, the electronic sounds are what made this movies brutal abrasive atmosphere which is something the MCU was sorely lacking. I just hope Civil War follows by example.
+Austin David My expectations about Civil War are sky high, because it's directed by the same guys. So, I hope it will follow the same line.
+artbargra it will
they would listen to electros theme then😂
+artbargra Exactly.
Screams? I didn't notice any screams =o
There's no 'basically' about it. If you have any sort of prosthetic, you are a cyborg by definition.
It reminds me of Quake's theme shouting part (the classic FPS from the 90's, not the comic book character).
Makes it even scarier when u think of it that way
It was confirmed by the composer that it was his own voice not Bucky's
Hearing this theme again in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was a pleasing sound to my ears.

It's fucking awesome, i love this theme
NO SHIT! I MUST WATCH THAT SERIES!
You know you're a terrifying badass when Black Widow, one of the deadliest and most effective assassins in the world, is terrified of you. This theme helps immensely too.
This song illustrates just how tortured he really is...
The scream is quite symbolic,
Because underneath all that programming, it's still Bucky.
“I won’t let you hurt anyone”
“You are free...”
DeducingLoki Describe this soundtrack in one word? For me: Loneliness.
He was truly amazing in this role.
sailtheplains Amazing comment, and by the way, The Winter Soldier is in Ant-Man.

4:56 my fav part. That horn is so badass
If they made a winter soldier movie:
Screentime: 90% of the film
Number of lines spoken: 10
and it would still be an amazing movie, if they don't screw up the story.
That would basically be an adaptation of the comic “Winter Soldier: The Bitter March.”
You're just describing John Wick
I think that is what makes the winter soldier so terrifying. He doesn't talk or ambles while the hero sits and tries to get out of handcuffs. He executes his mission with efficiency as fast as possible. And he will use any means necessary to accomplish his end-goal. He truly is a master assassin.....
Love music like this. Henry Jackman really understood what kind of guy The Winter Soldier is. His theme is nightmarish and manic, it works like a charm.

Bucky's theme is actually him screaming himself to death.
I get chills hearing this. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is by far the best and darkest film in the MCU.
There was no comedy, little humor, fast-paced action scenes, and characters dying in gruesome ways.
I would say Infinity War is the darkest now but it's just an opinion
There was still humour

@@yourmama3515 endgame was a good movie to watch once to bring back the memories of the old movies

I was so glad they used this theme again for Bucky/WS in Civil War. It's literally the perfect theme for him, plus it sounds badass asf.
Grace K indeed
You know, when hearing this song, it starts out eerily calm before suddenly becoming intense. In a way, it really reflects the Winter Soldier's appearances as a whole. He comes from nowhere, makes a show of his assassinations, and then vanishes again, as suddenly as he appeared.
It really scares me, to be honest.
Tony Stark: "Do you ever remember them?"
Bucky Barnes: "I remember all of them."
This is one of the best unsettling themes ever
This theme will probably have an heroic remake for when Bucky return in Infinity War and fight along side Steve.
I hope so!
That will be amazing!
Jesus christ i hope not its bad ass alone
Wow! That would be absolutely amazing
I think Cap's theme with a halo 2 theme esque electric guitar would be sick for that.
Perfect.
It's... disturbingly... _beautiful._
Jesus, those moments when the prolonged note melts into this screaming noise... creepy af

The winter soldier on the other hand is ruthless and unrelenting and was trained for years to be one of the worlds greatest assassins. As well he has a bionic arm which would make winning a fistfight with him difficult for a normal guy like Jason and if we're going by movie version is also a super soldier. This is like, the only piece of music I remember from any Marvel movie.
Yeah, marvel needs to seriously step up their game with the music.
