Even though Fab never shows off with big fills or overly complex rhythm patterns, his ability to hit the snare the same way every time, with the same tone, velocity, and timing, proves it all. Fab's one of the best drummers alive and of the last 25 years in my books
They keep releasing Phoenix albums. Wish they would release an album that has more punk and less supper club. Never cared that they were rich and bored as long as they rocked. Now they actually sound rich and bored.
I know man... I cant even imagine it. This song is so brilliant, it's hard to believe that at one point Julian was some teenager who had no idea how to even come up with a melody, instead of being one of the greatest songwriters of the 21st century who happens to have one of the keenest ears for composing catchy and passionate music. If there was one thing I could wish for, it would probably be his talent for writing amazingly melodic tunes.
Hell yea! First two albums! Then super gems like fear of sleep, ize of the world........3rd album cover and its ironic, shows a sliver as if the dream was dimming to a close, and i felt like that was there last album. but when you are in a group, and you all achieve making silver out of iron together. that has its own life span... Billy corgan talks about it poignantly on jre.... Lol! Also people talk so much shit about there wealthy upbringing, as if they were supposed to be some crust punk thrash band. “Love covers a multitude of sins” and if there sin was being rich kids, they all poured there hearts out without reserve, worked hard and gave valuable and powerful art to the world. Besides, they were glamorous, they grew up on grunge like we all did, but didn’t use it as a artistic crutch... America loves the ‘rags to riches’ story, it’s in our d.n.a. But that wasn’t there purpose as a band. They were the changing of the old guard. they brought a dark and tactile vintage dream with luxurious melodic decadence. Built from scratch.
in 2002 there was a blog called lastnite.org with lots of bootlegs and rare recordings. in the past decade its gone through a few different owners and domain names but now its toxic-radio.org. shesfixingherhair.co.uk is another great site for rare strokes stuff.
It's nice with the live drums. I understand the drum machine quantizing as a radio friendly unit shifter, but I always thought it would sound better with a proper drum sound. Sounds like a great show!
bauerklos music nah, i forget exactly how they did it, but they basically ran fab's playing through a few methods of recording and it ended up sounding like that.
yeah I read about the albums production a bit ago, it's dope what the producer could do to make the drums sound like that - when it started also sounds a lot like a loop / drum machine or something sequenced. definitely fooled me
And that last chorus he switched it up I missed the last bus, I’ll take the next train I try but you see, it’s hard to explain I did the right thing, but act the wrong the way I like it in here, but I cannot stay Forget the wrong thing, I go the wrong the way ‘Cause I am too young, and they are too old This place is a zoo, the joke is on you You’re right it’s true
@DavKatch i'm talking about the version in the Ruff Enuff Stuff session, it's a version that has only 1 guitar, a bass, a drum machine, it has different lyrics, no production value whatsoever and Pete is singing

It's weird. It's always puzzled me why fans always cheer at the 2 minute point (the false stop) as though the song is over. Even shows where the Strokes headline and everybody knows the song - they still cheer like noobs!
the libertines got a record deal literally only because they dressed and looked strung out on drugs like the strokes and made rock music ...pete has even admitted this lol
this is hard to explain, but its another band playing it their way. The vocalist doesnt have julian's traditional slur, he sounds to clean throghout the entire song. not bad though
Hard to Explain is a rare, perfect song. The false stops just add to it. And the video for it just put this song into the stratosphere.
Its Hard to Explain hehe xd lol kek lmao
2:01 imagine how blown away you must’ve been back in the year 2000 when you thought the song just ended there

Part of that is because the drums are way compressed, but it's still impressive
the great drummers are the ones you don't really notice ... not flashy, just there at the right time.
Drums please fab
He messed up a lot💀idk what you’re talking about
So many of us desperately listening to their old stuff hoping the will soon be something new !
our prayers have been answered

I love it when julian like growls
Yeahhhhhhh, ughhhhh I love him
Damn they had it cranked up on this version. Top shelf.
@Elijah Finch that is absolutely your song you're not fooling anyone, stop self promoting please
i love the quicker tempo to it
I already thought it was crazy fast and then I find this. How the hell did they manage to play this fast

its very tiring the first couple of times you play it but it gets easier.
no pun intended

+Pints of Guinness yeah but how did they get them?
Pints of Guinness aye
This is my favorite song. It's nice to hear n early version of it.
Pints of Guinness these sites are my high school years ❤️ 🎶memories🎶
it's so strange hearing the opening lines that late into the song
THis is just awesome man.
I love this version, right now it's my favorite hard to explain version :D.

Woo I’m from Carolina :) South Carolina anyway
I'm guessing you're not like that

best band of all time? i think so
I think so!
wow julian's voice sounds a lot different. i thought it was like a cover band but then it started to sound like him.
nice version
It's nice with the live drums. I understand the drum machine quantizing as a radio friendly unit shifter, but I always thought it would sound better with a proper drum sound. Sounds like a great show!
its not a drum machine in the studio version
in the beginning it has to be
bauerklos music nah, i forget exactly how they did it, but they basically ran fab's playing through a few methods of recording and it ended up sounding like that.
yeah I read about the albums production a bit ago, it's dope what the producer could do to make the drums sound like that - when it started also sounds a lot like a loop / drum machine or something sequenced. definitely fooled me
its not a drum machine it was just recorded highly compressed, on a early 2000s era computer instead of a high quality sound board

First verse:
Says he can’t decide
Take the kids inside, what does he desire?
Oh, I don’t see it that way; I don’t see it that way
We shared some ideas, all obsessed with fame
I liked it when it ringed
Oh, I just can’t remember; I just can’t remember
Raised in Carolina, I’m not like that
Put the past behind her, I don’t miss them
You take the moon and you take the sun
Hmm I wonder if there’s a band called lonely gimmick with similar vibes lmaoo
hahaahahah shhhhhhhhhh
You are 110% right!
jules singing in this demo totally reminds me of joy remone.

R.I.P
i love this :(
It is definitely The Strokes. It is Julian's voice, obviously.
Seems like this is a live version.
Good observation, I thought the yelling and screaming of multiple people was just Nikolai having fun
It's weird. It's always puzzled me why fans always cheer at the 2 minute point (the false stop) as though the song is over. Even shows where the Strokes headline and everybody knows the song - they still cheer like noobs!
It’s their chance to be the center of attention
@Elijah Finch Will do, my friend!
Because it’s a perfect placement of a false stop and people express their happiness of it? As a band you want people to cheer during the song.
''I should give the impressions that I'm amazingly talented, truth is, I record EVERYTHING'
- Julian Casablancas
@Elijah Finch lol what a loser, did you self promote on every comment of this video?
hahaha seems like a live version? yeahhh they just added a crowd of people cheering at the end for that live feel huh... you so funny dawg
Yet coolest
the "I dont see it that way" part, huh?
That's quite clearly Julian singing.
Same... Except in my case it was all of Is This It.
That would be pretty clever
@thekillers1stfan Wow, I never thought about it that way. Yeah I can see it. It definitely has a very similar attitude putting the actual sound aside.
@DeadPixel00 wtf r u talking about? this has the same clearness in voice as boombox. The traditional Julian sings rough bro.
we shared some ideas,
all obsessed with fame,
likes it when it rains...

this is hard to explain, but its another band playing it their way. The vocalist doesnt have julian's traditional slur, he sounds to clean throghout the entire song. not bad though
