They spent three weeks teaching this to us at school when I did my GCSE in art. You did it in under five minutes. And made it ten times more enjoyable than those eight hours I spent in a classroom.
Lol same the amount of times we had tutorial sessions about it and no one got it
becki groves I honestly think the future of education is in short interactive internet videos!!!!
becki groves This is a very very short introduction to color psychology, color is a huge topic. Internet tutorials are a complementary study, not a formal and professional study.
Of course internet tutorials are not formal and professional study, but my point is that I learnt more in five minutes than I learnt in eight hours of class time because of Rachel and Daniel's efficient teaching style and the inefficiency of the teaching style of the school I went to. To see whether what we were taught at school was any more in depth than this and I had just forgotten (which would also emphasise my point), I actually dug out my old books and went through them. School went just slightly deeper, and explained which colours to use for which emotions, but I did not remember any of it because not only did they spend a lot longer explaining the basics which did not need so long explaining, but they did not do it in such an active and memorable way. Rachel and Daniel went out and photographed two colours to show how they affected the mood of an image, whereas in school we were just told what each colour did and told to experiment without being given any demonstration.
So yes, I am not going to get a qualification from watching a Mango Street Tutorial, but just because I have a GCSE in art, it does not mean I have the ability to paint a perfect replica of the Mona Lisa, either.
Maybe you guys simply just can't get the material...
If you two ever write a book I promise I will buy a copy, do you realise just how talented you both are? We all know there are photographers on UA-cam that don’t know one end of the camera from the other, but I can only think of a couple that are as good as you for working with models and still life. You two are unique, from choosing your models, to what they wear, to your poses right through to your post editing has me blown away. It’s that extra thing beyond pressing a shutter and getting the right exposure that’s very special indeed. Every video I think it can’t be as good as the previous one and every video you produce something better.
I use the colour themes in Photoshop and then create a gradient layer using the the palette I’m given and whichever ever rules I’m following, I then go through all the different layer options such as normal, soft light, overlay etc. It’s amazing the difference it can make to a landscape.
Thank you for giving me that photographers name last week, an amazing photographer.
Thanks, as always, for the support, Mark! We always get excited to see your kind words in the mix.
Glad you enjoyed Hideaki Hamada's work! We're huge fans of his.
Where can we find your landscape photography? We'd love to check it out!
Mango Street Long story but basically I’m very aware of my expiry date due to a very unusual condition. This condition means I cannot commit myself to anything as I never know how I will be from one day to the next so I don’t have a website. It also means I spend an awful lot of time in bed watching UA-cam. I sell prints in the old fashioned way of putting them in certain outlets and people buy them when they see them. The money then goes to a disability charity I’m passionate about, I met my wife there and I’m an advisor for them. I've tried 500px and Instagram but never really took to either, so because of all that I don’t have any work to speak of online. I did recently post one on twitter, of some God rays my twitter name is @llb_mark but I think that’s the only one still online.
Mark Harris PREACH SAMEE
Mark Harris omg I would buy it too!!! They should definitely put something together
if they did write a book i would get it and i'm not even into photography i just want it for the artistic enrichment
So for those of you that see this and get overwhelmed at the thought of picking a location, outfit, and accessories that obey color theory, or if you don't shoot people, just keep in mind that this is a tool to help you recognize why a particular photo is very pleasing, and also a tool to help you in your post shoot editing process. Remember, if you're a Lightroom user you have color sliders that you can use to adjust hue and saturation of everything in your photo. So if you photo is close to having a triadic color palette but there's is a non-trivial amount of color that is distracting, you can possibly turn the saturation down on that one.
Also, what are the most abundant colors outside? Green usually, yellow in the fall depending where you are, muted white/gray in the winter. Find a model who's willing to wear a solid color jacket and head outside! Easy peasy.
Derek Alvarado Really thoughtful and interesting tip! Appreciate it!
thank you!
Hey! So I want to go to photography school IN Jan on month away and It is not going to be possible unless I use social media to my benefit! Help me by donating or sharing it on your Facebook!

If Mango Street was a school, i'd graduate in less than a year
You guys are awesome! Honestly it’s hard to find content like this with regards to photography! It’s all encompassing not just how to use a camera but how to compose and make a more engaging photo! Keep it up!
You guys are just awesome!
Bruhh you came here also🤪
Great work once again, guys! I've learned about colour theory relating to graphic design but never really thought about how it applies to photography as well.
Ricky Martin!
Mango Street!
Thanks, man. I've quite a bit of photography now and I always thought about the colour theory when picking a shot/editing, but I didn't think so much about it when doing little bit of graphic design. Which do you usually pick when selecting of the complementary, split complementary, triadic and analogous?
Ricky Martin yeah it’s an important aspect which I’ve never gave much thoughtb
i thought it would be easy peasy lemon squeezy but instead it's next level difficult difficult lemon difficult
This channel's got AESTHETICS AF
This is one of the coolest photo sets i've seen. So creative and inspiring. Thanks!!
Why pay for photography classes when Mango Street teaches you everything (for free). More power to the two of you. ♡ Bless you ♡
You two are just great, then there's Carlton, and the trinity of greatness is complete
I go to art school in New York studying photography and I learn more from your videos than I have this entire year in classes. Maybe I should drop out and move to LA to become friends with you guys lol

Dude is good... composition is spot on... but holy, Rachel (Rachelle?) is a genius with the models. LOVE how her mind works. Every shot has something unique in it, even if we've seen the overall idea before. So well done.

This is so new to me. Thanks. You're the best!
This Adobe color is money! Thanks for the quick and concise version of Color Theory. I carefully selected the like button since I'm smashed the subscribe button a few weeks back 😎
Great info! I've only heard of using colors opposite of each other on the color wheel.
I AM LIVING FOR THIS SHOOT
Love it how keegan's picture suddenly pops up once you mentioned key color
thank you for your amazing work!! i'm beyond grateful for having found you :)
i have a couple things that i'd love to see videos about from you two (three if you count carlton b/c i want him in every video???):
1. styling photographs (outfits and locations)
2. finding models
3. getting models comfortable in front of the camera (maybe an extension of the "shooting non-models" video, but more about fine-art/editorial posing since that can get sort of awkward and then you can see it in the facial expression)
4. breaking your photography habits
those are the things i struggle with the most!
ahh love you guys, im currently learning about this now, even better seeing it put to use by my two favourite togs and couple :) !!
