- Its resto-mod / rebuild time with this old GT Karakoram. My brother got inspired by my Timberline and asked if I could build him one smiliar, so I did.. I managed to find this sweet GT Karakoram that suited perfectly! Its from around 1995/96 and I converted it into a rigid 1x9 set up with mostly modern parts. He was really stoked how it turned out, let me know what you guys think!

THIS WAS MY BIKE!!!! So wow cool!!!
I used to use it as a commuter in Auckland and so stuck on those mudguards, pack rack and upsidedown light. Ended up moving overseas in 2020 and sold it. Since then I've really gotten into bike restoration (done a few Hard Rocks, GTs and Giants) and always wondered what ended up happening to this beauty. The paint job was so clean and the frame size was unusually large for a 90s MTB.
So glad to see what you've done! A really nice job, pretty much exactly how I'd have done it. Those Van grips are sexy!
wow crazy!! that’s so awesome, the story of the red karakoram continues! thank you for the comment, it means a lot! the bikes gone to a good home, so no need to worry anymore haha! my brother loves it.🙏
What a great way to pass some time watching this awesome build while I'm smoking some BBQ on my grill on this Easter Sunday. The paint on that bike is looks so good, it probably didn't get much riding. Great job!
I can personally attest to throwing this baby around Woodhill, it just lived most of it's live inside so that's why it's in such good condition.
For the rear brake cable routing I'd use a spare v-brake noodle coupler, installing it backwards between your cable housing and the existing canti routing on the frame so it's not just wobbling there
You mean that cylinder piece that comes off the v brake noodle. I just tried it should work I think. Thanks now I can restomod my gt.
yet another stunning build! keep 'em comming!
So sick!
Love the content and the sensible component choices.
glad I found the channel 👌🏼
Great project and beautiful ride..
Hi, this movie is great. I renew similar one few year ago. If you want to guide rear brake cable not through metal ring at the and of frame, then use 1-2 cm of teflon insert from v-brake elbow guide. It should fit. Also you can stick it in to grommet. Maybe it not going to look amazing but still will cover the cabel.
After spending 45 minutes cleaning my own road bike. It was really nice and just sit down for 20 minutes and watch a master at work. I especially liked the red and silver chrome accents which really make the bike pop. I'm hoping one day I could get enough skill, time, and money to build up my own single-speed bike similar to yours like this. It looks so bloody cool props to you man. Awesome work!
Great vid as always, it's like therapy watching. Need to get me an 90's MTB, looks way to fun to ride!
Masterful build as ever! I´ve always admired these old GT Karakorams. There are flexible V-brake pipes with which you maybe could just get away with the original cable routing. Or you could use cable grips (f.e. Jagwire guide cable grips) that make for a much cleaner look than zip ties and run a full housing. Might not work with the shape of the cable stops on that frame though ...
Love a 1x9 setup.
Super simple, super cheap, easy to build, durable.
If you remove your ego and get a smaller chainring you'll find the range and the jumps between cogs to be plenty
Beautiful build as always
Young Man, Your rebuild is spot on. I love the new bit of kit to revive your brothers Olde bicycle.
Top drawer.
Cheers Mate.
Troy 😎
Rocking a modern GT Karakoram... my first not 26er. Thanks for the vid!
You did a beautiful work here !!!
On the rear brake cable try using a ferrule like on the brake noodle. Cable end will fit and the noodle end might fit over cable guide on the frame.
Very nice build!
Beautiful build!
Really great video ! Super clean bike ❤
Sick build homie! Plus 💚 woodall
sick build! love the riding clips at the end too!! looks fun. :D cheers
Awesome rebuild!!!!
Sick build! Nice one mate
This is a reallyhnice rebuild. I like the choices you made for the new parts.
Really nice build dude and super sick wheelies lol, crazy.
Great video, love seeing old GT's being brought back to life!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed ✌️
Gotta definitely get back my 95 team scream GT from the friend and start some project like this. Looks neat, good job.
What a build. as always…. Cheers bro
Great job 🤩🤩
Sweet rebuild 👌🏼
Love those old GTs
Beautiful GT
Good work!
Nice. My first bike coming out of BMX. Now gavel bikes and road bikes. My gt was polished aluminum
So relaxing
Wow, such a beauty!
Also wanted to add that I think the Karakoram logo’s on your bro’s bike look like the sickest font I’ve seen on a vintage/retro GT so far🤘
Loved watching the build. I just picked up a green Timberline.
1992 or later? I have owned quite a few GT's in the 90's and I own 3 GT's now, still love them as much as I did then!
Slick and sick brother!
Thanks bro!!
the Build looks amazing i have a ferrari red Karakoram frame from 93 that i am building up at the moment.
Great video
I found a clamp on cable housing stop from Origin8 and have been using it for this same purpose, works great and looks better than zip ties
Dud nice restomod !!!
straight banger!
Maybe someone already mentioned it: maybe a Problemsolver Cablestop or something similar could be a solution for the rear V-brake. Anyway: nice built! Greeting from Germany
El mejor video que hasta ahorita eh visto 👹
Nice job bro. Credit where credit's due!
P.s I subscribed after watching your content on Roku. 👍
Again Troy 😎
I've got a similar aged karakoram I'm doing has a blue to black flame paint job from factory I actually got it for free but has a lot more missing parts had incorrect wheels have some stx hubbed ones to replace with, a broken seatpost which I need to figure out the size to replace with I belive it's 26.8. I love the 90s gt bicycles I have a few others too a 95ish palmor and 98 performer bmx all projects.
Great video
One of the best places to acquire a 1990's MTB frame is to venture near homeless camps as they often have a habit of stripping parts off of bikes and leaving the frames behind . I've found 3 over the past few months . Also keep a $10 bill on you if they want money as they're clueless about what an old bike is as they'd rather have $10 . One of the frames I found was just lying in a pile of homeless trash was a Barracuda A2E Hardtail Ultimate Superlight that I think is a 1995 , a little scuffed up but in overall VG condition .
Saya suka video2 kamu beneran, ❤❤❤
Bikin sepeda lama jadi bagus, soalnya frame sepeda dari besi saya suka
Salaam dari 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Adelante Ceci preciosa🎉🎉
cool bike dude
Thanks man!
rear brake cable flow, I used a cable tie to hold in place. I converted my frame from 26 wheel to a 29er.
Love it, I think it looks amazing. Only thing I'd do differently is the cranks, as I think they look too chunky compared to the rest, but that's just personal preference. Regarding the rear brake thing, do you reckon a ferrule would fit backwards over the little bit of angled routing?
For the rear cable routing you could use a cable stop that is usually found at vintage brake levers. Idk if you see what im talking about...
Nice🙌
Saludos desde Perú. Buen video
I'm a simple man. I see a new Wavey video and I click.
Good bike
Beautiful color!! And large size, too..
What the song in the assembly pawm pawm I'm feeling haha
16:24 that silver v brake hose end does come in a larger size that will sit over the frame cable housing here 16:18
If you have access to a 3D printer I would print a piece for the brake line. A piece that slots in the bike frame and then has a slot for the line, that way not only looks more clean but you avoid scratching the frame or snapping the cable.
how did you clean the rust from the bottom bracket hole? great build btw
Owesome video mate!! where about NZ are you, I lived in Auckland for 3 years and loved it!! now I work for a Specialized dealer here in Argentina, let me know if you are keen for a colab, I will love it!! Cheers!!
dope~
Sick bikes man. Id would be helpful if you had a list of components, final weight and a price as well. I'm looking to build one myself and never done this before. Is this a better frame then the more common Specialized Rockhopper?
I was instantly thinking of heatshrink tubing for the rear brake routing. Can get it at Bunnings in Australia. It’s in the electrical section near the zip ties. Seems like you are in Australia? I’m in Kiama, NSW. Take care and siiiiiick build!!
1:50 I snapped up a few of these for $66aud from CR last month. Can't beat them
an item you may have in your household that can remove sticker residue in Acetone aka Nail Polish Remover 6:45 Or Rubber Cement Thinner and plain ole Rubbing Alcohol.
Nice bike, I would love to own one,gt is one of my favorite brands, did you consider building it a twoxnine. Lots of cross country trails around here with steep hill climbs.
daaammn!!! 🔥🔥🔥
❤️
🔥🔥🔥
For the brake cable issue under the seat how about a cable "feral" like used to be used on old three speeds where the cable entered the brake lever.
very cool! encountered any issues with a non clutch derailleur?
nice
I’d use a heatshrink to tighten the break wire against that metal pin on the frame, if that makes sense
Awesome. Looks sensational
Is it true If you replace the 7-sp freehub with a 10-sp freehub, you can use a 10sp cassette without further changes?
Your bro didn’t find the cockpit a bit small with the short stem? The front centres on those bikes is so short. Just wondered out of interest.
Frame size question:
In these 90's mountain bikes, I ride 18~19" frame size. In local classified ad, I see a XL 21" frame 90's bike. Clearly too big for me and I want to swap stem/handlebar like you have in the video. Does this mean I should be able to ride a larger 21" frame bike? or no due to handlebar being wider?
Hey very nice bike !! What is your chainring/ cassette set up?
Have you ever ran into any trouble when combining shimano and sram components?
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I hope you'll keep that Deore LX groupset together, they can still be of some use to someone.
26" dj build next for the pump track?
dope build, looks like a fun ride!
what's the white grease you put on the threads/seatpost? some kind of anti-seize?
thanks man! It’s just general bike grease, anti-seize is perfect for those scenarios though!
10/10
Is it a 20-inch frame?! Really beautiful!
when swaping out a susspention fork for a ridgid does it need to be a compensated length or is that only for road bikes
Hey mate, how do you find the gear ratio with that crank? I bought the same crank and just realised there's really no options to increase the chainring size. The only after market rings I can find are Wolf Tooth, which cost more than the crank itself.
Old school never sleep)
Nice job/////Shame V Brakes never look the part quite like Canti's
Just curious if those tires are the dark bronze version or the regular tan wall? Great build as always!
Thanks! They are the darker ones I believe
Love the build... but why do you think the seat rails are titanium instead of aluminum?? Was that common??
hey there, how do you source old shimano rear derailleurs?
I want to do this with a zaskar!
did you have a 1x7 drivetrain on the previous GT? if so how did you like it?
How have you installed deore system on this bike, if it needs 49mm chainline?
You used the right lever for the front brake? Things really are upside down on that side of the earth...
