The background behind the genealogy in Genesis 5 is one of our most frequently asked questions.
Since the ten Hebrew names are proper names, they are not translated but only transliterated to approximate the way they were pronounced. The meaning of proper names can be a difficult pursuit since direct translations are not readily available. Many study aids, such as conventional lexicons, can prove superficial when dealing with proper names. Even a conventional Hebrew lexicon can prove disappointing. A study of the original roots, however, can yield some fascinating insights. (It should be recognized, however, that the views concerning the meaning and significance of the original roots are not free of controversy and are subject to variant readings. This is why we receive so many questions or comments on variations.)
Adam
The first name, Adam, comes from adomah, and means "man." As the first man, that seems straightforward enough.
Seth
Adam's son was named Seth, which means "appointed." When he was born Eve said, "For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew."
Enosh
Seth's son was called Enosh, which means "mortal," "frail," or "miserable." It is from the root anash: to be incurable; used of a wound, grief, woe, sickness, or wickedness. (It was in the days of Enosh that men began to defile the name of the Living God.1 )
Kenan
Enosh's son was named Kenan, from which can mean "sorrow," dirge," or "elegy." (The precise denotation is somewhat elusive; some study aids unfortunately presume an Aramaic root synonymous with "Cainan.") Balaam, looking down from the heights of Moab, employed a pun upon the name of the Kenites when he prophesied their destruction.2
Mahalalel
Kenan's son was Mahalalel, from mahalal, which means "blessed" or "praise"; and El, the name for God. Thus, Mahalalel means "the Blessed God." Often Hebrew names included El, the name of God, as Dani-el, "God is my Judge," Nathani-el, "Gift of God," etc.
Jared
Mahalalel's son was named Jared, from the verb yaradh, meaning "shall come down." Some authorities suggest that this might have been an allusion to the "Sons of God" who "came down" to corrupt the daughters of men, resulting in the Nephilim ("Fallen Ones") of Genesis 6.3
Enoch
Jared's son was named Enoch, which means "teaching," or "commencement." He was the first of four generations of preachers. In fact, the earliest recorded prophecy was by Enoch, which amazingly enough deals with the Second Coming of Christ.4
Methuselah
The Flood of Noah did not come as a surprise. It had been preached on for four generations. But something strange happened when Enoch was 65, from which time "he walked with God." Enoch was given a prophecy that as long as his son was alive, the judgment of the flood would be withheld; but as soon as he died, the flood would be sent forth.
Enoch named his son to reflect this prophecy. The name Methuselah comes from two roots: muth, a root that means "death"5 ; and from shalach, which means "to bring," or "to send forth." Thus, the name Methuselah signifies, "his death shall bring."6
And, indeed, in the year that Methuselah died, the flood came. Methuselah was 187 when he had Lamech, and lived 782 years more. Lamech had Noah when he was 182.7 The Flood came in Noah's 600th year.8 187 + 182 + 600 = 969, Methuselah's age when he died.9
It is interesting that Methuselah's life was, in effect, a symbol of God's mercy in forestalling the coming judgment of the flood. It is therefore fitting that his lifetime is the oldest in the Bible, symbolizing the extreme extensiveness of God's mercy.
Lamech
Methuselah's son was named Lamech, a root still evident today in our own English word, "lament" or "lamentation." Lamech suggests "despairing." (This name is also linked to the Lamech in Cain's line who inadvertently killed his son Tubal-Cain in a hunting incident. 10 )
Noah
Lamech, of course, is the father of Noah, which is derived from nacham , "to bring relief" or "comfort," as Lamech himself explains. 11

I decided to look up the names mentioned in Genesis 5 by myself, find the meanings, and to the best of my ability put together the hidden sentence. Here's what I got:
Adam - Mankind
Seth - set, established
Enosh - sick and weak
Kenan - Acquire
Mahalalel - praise of God
Jared - he who descended
Enoch - dedicated
Methuselah - man sent to die on a mission
Lamech - the depressed
Noah - rest/comfort
Hidden sentence: "Mankind has been established to be sick and weak, and to acquire the praise of God. But he who descended will be a dedicated man capable of combat, but sent to die on a mission to bring the depressed and humiliated ones rest and comfort."

Absolutely blew my mind. I checked it, and there is some error in translation but it does not change a thing, really. Truly amazing when you think about how this works in English, considering that there is often a problem with the translation of Hebrew to English in the way that the language works, and that the Bible was written in Hebrew for the Israelites, yet we have preserved the meanings of these words to be able to see this today. Truly God has not let this corrupt a bit! God is glorious.
I did the same thing with the genealogy in Matthew 1 and it is very interesting.

What amazes me is that the Lord reveals this message and many others greater things, to whoever He chooses to.
One day I was reading the bible and I was very interested on the meanings of names in Hebrew since I wanted to learn the language and came around the genealogies and saw this hidden message as well. Of course I was amaze and very humbled; I started crying and giving thanks to God. Then I wanted to know if this has been already known and sure enough it was...Looked it up in google and there is, explained in many ways. But then I thought and questioned myself why would the Lord show me this, too? I am not a religious person, I only read and study the bible, pray and love the Lord with all my heart.
And I came to the conclusion that the Lord just wanted to grow my Faith in Him and let me know that if we have the right heart and a relationship with Him, He can to show us His awesome power and love through the Holy Spirit, angels and all His creation.
All it takes is believing and not doubting who the Lord is!

I do need some advice from you, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.
a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord(Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?
i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

The New Testament was written 60 plus years after the character Jesus was supposed to have lived, but he didn't come from nazareth, no one lived there, there are no archealogical remains, and Joseph and Mary (who wasnt a virgin) did not go to Bethlehem for a Roman census, records show there was no census in the year claimed for JCs birth and anyway it was not a requirement to go to the town of your forebears. its all man made myth.

Chuck Missler has done a great job throughout his career of finding many of these nuggets of inspiration within chapters, hidden in plain sight.
It is for God to provide a mystery within the pages of the Bible and up to us to find and enjoy these mysteries.
Chuck has found plenty of them, and one of his favorite sayings is...everything that is written in the Bible is there for a reason. Go and find the reason.
He found the CROSS OF CHRIST in the way the children of Israel set up and broke down the camp each time they moved.
Check out Numbers the 2nd chapter, and notice the names of the 12 tribes split up in groups of three, each forming EAST, SOUTH, WEST, and NORTH.
If you were on a mountain top looking down on the camp. it was in the shape of a cross, with the Tabernacle in the middle exactly where the heart of Jesus would have been. Just awesome !!!
You can check out his video on it and have him explain it, it is remarkable, just like this video.
He also shows how on the very first Passover, the children of Israel placing of the Lambs blood on the top lentil and the two side posts, would that next morning look like the sign of the cross to the death Angel striking down the firstborn in each household in all of Egypt that did not have the sign of the cross in lamb's blood on their doors.
So similar to how this world will fare for all those living on it with the blood of the lamb of God on the door of their heart. They WILL BE SAVED AND RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE IN THE PRESENCE OF ALMIGHTY GOD.
Unfortunately, for those who mock and ridicule it is all-together sad and pathetic, because the folks they are mocking, look up and see them as desperately in need of a savior, but have no concern at all.
They will live their lives, assuming they do not become believers in Christ, living seventy to a hundred years old, die and by their own words have nothing to show for the life they lived, nothing. Now, that is pathetic!! Except that the sad reality is they will rue each and every time they heard the gospel, and rejected it.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is true, as it is presented in the Bible, it is the absolute truth and your eternal life depends on wether you believe it.
Jesus took your sins, all of the world's sin on Himself on that cross, and every drop of His blood saves to the uttermost.
God the Father could not bare to look upon the Son of God He loved so much, while all of the dark, sick, twisted, perverted, wicked, disgusting,
evil SIN OF THE WORLD WAS BEING POURED INTO THE SON HE LOVES. Your sin, my sin, everybody who ever lived, their sin also.
The absolute loneliness that struck the Godhead that day was immeasurable.

Father God, Why hast thou forsaken me. Read the 22 Psalm for a full on description of what the Son of God endured for us human beings.
The cross is the Gospel of God, and God by Grace says to all who will believe by faith
(John 3:16) that His Son took your sin to that cross and died in your place, and then again believe fully in your heart that God raised up Jesus from the dead three days later...YOU WILL BE SAVED.
Eternal life with Jesus, wherever He is, that's where you will be.
It will be incredible and indescribable !!!

Now this is amazing. And i will tell you why. Many people who critizice Christians and say the "rules", which by the way to any un-believers reading this is Old Testament, are not of a becoming Christian. Yet God being the wise, magnificent God he is, gave us a message IN the message that seems "silly". If the Holy Bible was something made up, why would there be messages inside it.And note, these aren't JUST messages. They are real. Real people naming their sons real names. Real people doing God's plan. Amen. God is great.

So I got I got one of Chuck missler's books years ago and read that there was also a section where it shows how the tribes of Israel we're supposed to camp and from a bird's-eye view it forms a shape of the cross, Jesus is in the Bible from the beginning because he is the beginning amen and amen!
This has been known for centuries. 20 years ago we published bookmarks with this on it, except we printed the word "rest" instead of "comfort." Nice to see Missler catching up. How about everybody doing the same with the last word of each book of Torah? Egypt - journeys - Sinai - Jerico - Israel. ...and the beat goes on. It's better to have THE Teacher reveal these things through love of and study of His Word than get second hand nourishment. Yeah, I know; we're given teachers for edification. Just work to not be ashamed, especially on Judgement Day while explaining where you learned what you believe.

Ateo forever I used to think the way you did. I was an Atheist but then I took time to pray... It changed me and it happened 2 days ago. I will not force you to believe but If you really want answers, just pray (without any skeptical thoughts). No I haven't read the whole bible (only fragments) but I spoke to God directly and I felt feelings I've never felt before. There's quite a line between Spirituality and Religion, we all are skeptical of both. If you've been praying and received no answer then you're no putting your faith in God during your prayer. I fell ill and prayed for health and when I was about to pray again for the same thing I noticed Psalm 22 in front of me. Read Psalm 22. Chuck cannot take credit for this. The name meanings from Adam to Noah and what they spell out have been known for 200 years. There is no such thing as hidden messages in God's word. He ahs NOT studied the HEBREW LANGUAGE at all! I've been a linguist for over 30 years, this guy has never studied any foreign language, he apparently can't even use a Hebrew dictionary properly because he got his definitions so wrong.
