Many scientific studies show beaver ponds are rich in insects and invertebrates for food, and fish in ponds are larger and more abundant. Beaver ponds provide important refuges for young fish from predators and from strong currents or spring run-off in larger streams and rivers.
You would be better off if you let the current carry the beaver dam wood down stream so the beavers would have a harder time finding new wood when they started rebuilding the dam that "very night".

The beavers live in a lodge in the lake formed by the dam....and now that lake's drained, the lodge is vulnerable to predators. So not torturing, but probably killing.
beavers never live in the dam itself. Most of them build a separate lodge usually in an island further up in the pond or river. They build the dam to raise the water level around their lodge, so that often times the entrances are under water and difficult for predetar animals to enter but the caves and tunnels in which they live are higher up above the water level again, of course.
