CX500 Build - Making Dual Custom Throttle Cables for the VM34 Carbs - EP43

- Time to make the all important throttle cables on the CX500 build! In this video I walk you through making a set of custom length cables using a quality kit from Venhill that you can do at home. I chose this dual cable route from the get go instead of a splitter just to keep everything clean and to act as two fully independent cables for adjustability.
The kit I used was sourced through Revival Cycles who also have great video series on using these cables as well as all of the products they offer. All links below:

Venhill is generous with the stickers.
I received two cable kits and got ten stickers. 😅
Thats the best ratio!
that snap is so satisfying.
Yea its viscous!
100% helpful, thank you!
🤘🤘
Excellent - a neat and precise job as always - thank you for sharing!
Hey thank you Mike!
The cable ends that you soldered on are commonly called Knarps in the bicycle world. They are available with set screws that go into the end of the barrel. It eliminates the need for solder. It might be a good way to set things up ,leaving all of the cable adjusting barrel for later on. Nice clean work
I've used those in the past but prefer solder when I can.
Awesome build. It's great to see the attention to detail and the quality you put into it!
Thank you much! I'll be proud and very willing to have this photographed when done without the tank and seat on it as Ill have no fear it will be hiding any sub-par work.
Very helpful tips on making custom cables thanks
Happy you found the video helpful!
Carbs look great
Thank you!
I appreciate ur videos so much. Dude keep making them informational like this. I was looking to see how this is done and u showed it perfect way. More people needs to subscribe to you. :)
Well thank you for the input. Its tough as educational type stuff doesn't get seen as much so Ive been working to make them as short as possible and a bit more engaging. Thank you
Thank you for your videos bro I enjoy watching them you’re bad ass I need a friend like you...👌👌👌
Lookin good! I'll have to pick up one of those t-shirts!
Man that would be awesome! If you do send a pic and ill get it up on Instagram!
Nice work 👌👍👍
Thank you!
amazing video! That snap tho! So if my wire is a few centimeters off the cable can be adjusted?
This definitely has a firm snap! Few centimeters is too much room for error. You need to get to a smaller window of adjustment
Hi, bike's looking great. Any chance you have a link of the headlight you fitted ? like it a lot and Im working on a CX too, thanks a lot......Please put the grinder disc guard , I spent a night with a tiny steel chip in my eye many years ago and it's not nice at all, take care, Gus
The headlight is a basic 5 3/4" bates style. I know you can find them anywhere like dime city cycles or Amazon. Really cheap. If you havent seen already, I do have an earlier video of making the headlight mounts where I talk about it.
Also, I ALWAYS wear safety glasses but you couldn't see them behind my hat in that shot. Ive had a couple things in my eye and its the thing I try to avoid but....not putting a cover on the grinder lol.
@@BrickHouseBuilds Hi, i manage to see your glasses and i know that every job you do in the garage is in a safety and professional way that's why I love to watch you working. It's just that that disc spinning without the guard its a bit scary ....lol thanks for the headlight details. Gus
@@Gus-cg9yp You are right in that it is a risk but I am very diligent with how I handle that tool. If it gets dropped, wheel gets thrown away, blade rotation in relation to the work, lose clothing, spark direction, etc. I think about it all to help minimize my risk.
Is there no issue with the range of motion of the bars with both cables cut to the same length? I would think the cable for the left side carb would need to be slightly longer than the right as it’s further away from the throttle.
Im about to install a Domino double pull throttle assembly on an BMW R80 so I’m trying to see what other people have done.
Thanks!
Well you make the cables long enough to allow full range of motion with the bars. Cable length is a very minimal difference between left and right on this bike and any slack is simply adjusted out via the two adjustment points on each cable. Just mock up the cables how they fit best on your bike and if they are different lengths that will be fine. They just need to have the same slack and pull so the slides operate in unison.
5:05 I had to look away 😳
Work seculy held, firm hold on the tool, safety glasses on, very light pressure on the work piece. Was pretty safe
Where did you get the throttle tube from? I am running two vm34’s as well and can’t find a tube that will support two cables at once like that.
Its actually linked in the description. I always link what I use
@@BrickHouseBuilds thanks big dawg.
Excellent video just had one question ,if it was necessary to fray the end of the cable before soldering it?
No it is not. I've done it more on clutch cables when I weld them but it seems fraying on these did not help. A clean cable end will solder best. Definitely do some test runs though.
Fraying the end of the cable then soldering is the way to do it so the solder supports the wire strands. Cable left straight makes it easier to pull through the nipple . You do some really nice work. Thanks. I am enjoying the build. Richie. U.K.
