Thanks for the review. The bonus CD should have included whatever versions that existed of I Want Some Action, Numb to the Touch, Out of the Ether, The Wish, You Never Know, Backdoor Shuffle and live versions Rock n' Roll, Superstition, Outside Woman Blues, Rockin' in the Free World, Won't Get Fooled Again.
The F.U.C.K. CD cuts off about 10 seconds at the start of Poundcake, where you originally could hear Eddie plugging in his guitar. Now it starts right at the drill.
First album I put in and the first thing I noticed too. Actually pissed me off.
Whoa! That sucks
"Studio Rarities 1989 - 2004" is a misnomer. A Apolitical Blues was on the CD version of OU812 released in 1988.
was on the cassette version too, i still have it
I mean, yeah! None of the stuff is “rare”
I think OU812 still could’ve been louder. The songs off the best of both worlds compilation from my memory may have sounded better.
Agree!
They must have spent more effort on those remasters.
I would love to see The Wild Life soundtrack Eddie did.
there is a import version with all of ed's music from the movie. I picked one up from ebay...but, it was like $30-40...
Loved balance I even like Cherones album
Agree, it’s a nice set, but they could’ve done more for the fans. I love Van Halen, been a fan for years, but they just don’t seem to care what the fans want and need from them. I agree, the band is over, and they should be a bit more generous to the fans who helped get them to where they are. I appreciate what bands like KISS are doing at least going into there vaults and releasing live material to the fans. Oh well…
Van Halen are masters of selling fans the same albums over and over, at least four or five times.
Agree, they should have added some other material like “Live Without a Net,” live cd/Blu-ray.
Listen to the 2004 BOBW remasters and then these 2023 ones…night and day difference. 2004 sound amazing..major improvement upon the original, while 2023 is a minor change at best.
Saw the 2004 tour and refuse to spend a penny on the coffee song or the garbage that followed Eruption.
But out of curiosity, I checked it out, and you are right.
That said, like listening to baseball on AM Radio, I have grown to love the OU812 mix. Wish ADKOT had a little more roomy feel.
Nailed it on the assessment!! I was definitely expecting more from the OU812 remaster. And, Balance, was indeed perfect as is.
It was a remaster not a remix. Big difference
@@RyanConnell5150 That was already established that it was a remaster. There have been several artists that have done remasters, and it was a huge difference. Doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the effort that was put in. It still sounds great.
2:30 it's on the rarities CD because they copy and pasted from the vinyl version of this collection. Vinyl hasn't gotten any longer. The reason they cut it from the vinyl in the first place back in 1988 was due to time constraints of vinyl.
Thanks for the review. The reason "A Apolitical Blues" wasn't included on OU812 is that it was never on the vinyl. It was only included on the CD and a B-side. Same with Balance - "Baluchitherium" wasn't on the vinyl either. It was originally only on the CD and as a B-side to the "Don't Tell Me" 45 RPM record. Since this box set is all about the vinyl, those tracks are considered "rarities", since they weren't on the albums.
I mean, yeah, we get it, but….they’re still not “rare”
I really need to get this!!
Agree i would love to hear anything from the sammy era. Demos.... anything!
Japan show was February 89.
It's on Alex.
Absolutely!
Love the honest review… maybe you can help me… what was Ed’s gear for balance? Loved that tone! 5150s?
I am a casual fan and was very happy with the sound of the remaster LP's. The price was great, and with outtakes it may have jacked up the price. I do understand your frustration though as a super fan. Sound great!!
I agree with your overall review. Van Halen is the band that treats their fans like absolute crap. There is not one single "rarity" in this set. No outtakes (again)...and Wolfgang's fan bitterness on Twitter and dishonest comments about "there's nothing in the vault" only makes more and more fans dislike the guy more and more.
Jeremy.... I could not agree more! I was talking along with you in total agreement as I watched this! Thanks for the detailed review.
Totally agree with your review!!
Maybe Spotify is not the place to hear improvements. I couldn't hear any when comparing the old "Poundcake" with the new "Poundcake". 🤷
I got the vinyl. I love them. nuff said.
Great review Jeremy! You need to get Sammy on the show soon… cheers - R
Was it $100 in Canada? Cuz it's less than $50 in the US
is there a reason why they didn’t make a CD version of Collection 1 (which just came out with a similar artwork in a LP boxset)?
OU812 always sounded like trash. IMO it is so much better now. It was always so thin. I never understood all the Sammy hate; these are great record to varying degrees. We are never going to see rare stuff, I think. Not disappointed - I didn't expect much.
These remastered cds sound half as quiet as all my other cds. Like, what on earth? The VH collection cds of the DLR remasters in 2015 are way louder.
Why do remasters in 2023 of songs from the 90s sound half as loud as 2015 remasters of songs from the 70s?
I agree. I was expecting better sound, at least louder sound. I have to crank the volume on my stereo when I play these, compared to all of my other CD's.
EXCELLENT.
It's only van Hagar and the Bandhistory finished with *The Real VAN HALEN* (A different kind of Truth, 2012)!
I think this could be the start of something more. Start with the remasters. If they sell well, release more stuff.
lol what more do you think is coming? it took how long for these to get remastered but they re released the roth era albums three different times
Remasters have more guitar at the expense of instrument separation and headroom. 2004 bobw remasters and the 2005 japan forever young sound better.
I’ve only heard on Apple Music so far. I think 5150 and O812 sound better (agree should still remaster 0U812 though!). Carnal knowledge sounds about the same (it was perfect already) and Balance actually sounds slightly worse to me, definitely at least a volume drop compared to original.
OU812 and 5150 need a remixed! Remastered wasn’t good enough…just my .02 cents 🤷🏽
A Apolitical Blues was only on the cd not on the original cassette or vinyl
Totally agree Jeremy. Calling that one disc ‘rarities’ is a stretch at best. I love the Hagar era and love those songs but this release was lazy, especially with the library of content we know is out there
I agree man, you had the music already, you got it again with a little more “Hummfff” but you had it… Where’s the stuff you didn’t have??? Oh well!!
The fact they actually moved tracks from OU812 and Balance to the "Rarities" disc is complete bullshit. Lazy, rushed, money-grab.
I watched this for a 5150 remaster review lol
You ever hear the Japan remasters? I think they sounds better actually.
Yuuppp me too!
Lets be honest they half-assed it. The LP packaging was weak. I pulled the records out and they were actually dusty. Most of the remastering is better but I was expecting a rebirth for 812. Oh well. Like you said, “take my money.” Not like I’m not gonna get it.
All your comments about Sammy...and the band getting Sammy to go in the studio and find stuff... They did have another singer before Sam, y'now... And fan polls show consistently that fans are dying for Dave stuff that hasn't been released MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE. And the 3 1/2 hours of perfect quality Dave outtakes and 2004 remixed original demos that leaked last week prove that there is a LOT of great stuff that still hasn't been released.
OU812 was horrible recording no bass. 5150 was almost as bad. I think the remasters have little more bass but they are not louder. I have expensive headphone setup and I went back and forth between originals and remasters. The originals were louder.
New CD versions are slightly louder on 5150 and OU812. I used a decibel meter to test them. Literally around 1 or 2 db lounder. Other two albums are quieter on cd.
@@brickwilliamsguitar6307 ok I believe you I didn’t go back and forth on all but I can tell you for certain Balance original was louder.
The vinyl set much better value
Yesterday I listened this new remastered 5150 cd, and inmediately I listened my old 5150 cd. The same quality sound 😢😡. Why do my remastered Van Halen DLR CDs sound better than this new rematered albums?
And Who can read the lyrics in the Balance CD????😂
its funny to read that your dlr era remasters “sound better” because ive seen a lot of people nit pick how those sound especially the 2015 dlr remasters
Can you take the CDs out of the box and show them at least....W--O--W.
Never seen CD’s before?
Everything Van Halen has done since 1996 has been a missed opportunity. As a VH lifer, it’s disappointing.
4:06 “why they’re holding it from us…” because all this fan base does is whine and bitch about stupid shit no matter what the band does
I wouldn't buy any 6/10 product. This is just a cash grab from band and label. Spotify tracks are all remastered for streaming, good enough for most people.
FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE is your favorite Van Halen album?? ...uh... To each their own...I guess. Ugh...
Eddie Van Halen no
