      Absolutely. I visited numerous countries (incl China and Cuba) during Dubya's presidency and everyone was wonderfully nice to me on a personal level, but many shared their problems with US leaders. They explained, very clearly, the same notion you shared: there's a huge distinction between the people of a country and that country's leaders. People are friends, governments are not given the benefit of the doubt for obvious reasons.

    A little remark abot the bridge is that its called 'Troitsky' not 'Trotsky', and got its name because of the 'Troitsky Sqare' which is connected to. And the 'Troitsky Sqare' got its name from the "Troitsky Cathredral" which used to be there, but was demolished by the bolsheviks in 1932.
    And the world ''Troitsky' translates as 'Three' or 'in the name of the Three' and it comes from the christianity the Three Holy Hierarchs - Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom.

    I spent two months in Moscow last year, and let me tell you, I absolutely loved it. Sure, some people back home thought I was crazy and gave me a hard time about it, but honestly? Don't believe everything you hear in the media. Russia is this incredible mix of beautiful and flawed, just like anywhere else in the world.
    In fact, I'm back in Moscow right now! Couldn't resist coming back to hang out and explore more.
    Oh, and here's a heads up for any fellow Americans thinking of visiting:
    1. Customs might flag you for extra checks if you've got a U.S. passport. Don't freak out, it's normal, but be ready to wait 1-3 hours while they do their thing.
    2. Pro tip: Bring some U.S. dollars and exchange them at local banks once you're in Russia. You'll usually get a better deal that way.
    3. Or if you're tech-savvy, crypto can be a great option too!

A lot of russians suffer the diaspora because we have a bad reputation in the west that portraits russian people as bad and as communist as well. When I talk to a Haitian I don't ask him what his origins are, I don't tell him being Haitian is not an ethnicity, should he answer me my ancestors came from Africa 500 years ago.? Haiti like America has its own culture and history, its music etc. It's time to turn the page. I am Canadian and when people say to me "ok but where are you really from" it insults me. After 300 years I think I can say that I am just Canadian.

    • @huangwu2563
      @huangwu2563 Місяць тому +2

      @@balbutie As a Chinese who lived in the UK for more than 15 years, I fully understand what you said and I also understand why the OP says "New York"--for the same reason you have mentioned.
      As you said it, you, and probably the the OP as well, have been living in your continent for more than 300 years and 300 years is long enough to develop rich history and culture of your own. Your father lives there. Your father's father lived there. North America is your home and your ancestors home. You are ORIGINALLY from North America. When some people asks you "where are you really from" it may have an implied meaning that you are "settlers", which really offends to many white Americans. Also, in today's western world, racial equality is so much advocated. In this discourse, asking for a person's ethnicity can sometimes be offending. Example, a colleague of mine, who is black, use to teach English in China and he said he was often asked by his students which country he is from, and when he answered UK/London the Chinese students were sometimes dissatisfied and asked "where are you really from" or "where are you originally from". I guess in most of Europe and North America, people wouldn't ask him "where are you originally from" after he said he is from the UK.
      And besides, when that Russian auntie asked the OP what ethnicity he is, she is actually expecting an answer like "Anglo-Saxon", "Dutch" or "Irish", which is rather impossible for a white American to provide an answer, because the European ancestry of many (if not most) Americans are so "mixed" that it’s difficult to trace it back to just one country.
      I quoted -New York ethnicity- here just for fun, not meaning that I think there is anything wrong with OP's answer of "New York".

      No, you can’t :D because for whole rest world exist real Canadians and all rest - invaders :) I’m not trying to offend you, in my mind it is something natural. Exist natives and some _temporary_ invaders. I don’t know why I perceive this in such way, but as is. And when I discussed about this with other people, all also perceived you in such way. For us you are non real, just our emigrants (in most cases who made something awful at home and just ran away; as example most of criminals from WW2 who ran away from court to Canada).
