  • Both of these players showed up earlier in the event and won their matches respectively. We come into the third and final game with each player having strong knowledge of the is board in the match and each player having a lot of confidence in their feel for the speed of the table. This is a must win for both players.

I don’t understand the meta of the first guy taking such a short first shot.. I mean if you slide a short lag in the right side of the board.. Why can’t I just push a shot down the left side and make the short shot totally irrelevant??

Dwayne is setting him up while also not giving his opponent a chance to feel the speed of the board and find the end. He’s doing this because he’s confidant that he can lag more consistent than his opponent, especially if his opponent doesn’t get very many opportunities to do lag checks because they have to bang short weights constantly.
The first guy is throwing weights short and to the right rail because he’s a dominate left handed shooter. If you try to throw a deeper weight anywhere passed Dwayne’s short weight, he’s going to respond with his left hand and most likely stick it and now you’re going to be in more trouble.
That’s why the commentators were saying most guys at the top level will try to bump that short weight up to give themselves something deeper to go around.

@@mylesfredson5670 I appreciate the explaination but it just doesn’t make much sense to me still. I guess until I play someone that is good at the strategy I won’t fully appreciate it. I would just throw from other side of board and feel the lag on that side instead and possibly put a 2 or 3 on the board which now that other player has to answer in some sort of way with either a stick or a bump off. I feel it would challenge him more to have to make a long shot rather than bump him off for him to just throw another short weight. If he is throwing short weights then he most likely is throwing first. He throws a short one.. I throw from other side and stick a 2. Now that makes his first throw a total waste and his third throw has to be defensive.. Now I can stick his stick IF he sticks it.. See where I’m going with this?

@@gravityracergt I hear what you’re saying and it’s not a bad strategy to pass the short weight, especially if your opponent is lagging well, it’s just a very risky strategy, especially if you’re planning to lag your weight into the 2-3 zone like you said. Players at this level don’t miss weights very often. They often won’t miss a weight the whole game and they’re also very good at sticking weights. So if you go past the short weight and lag a 2, there’s a decent chance that your opponent is going to stick your 2. Now you’re shooting your second shot with two of your opponent’s weights on the board. The combo would be a very hard shot as the weights are so far apart. So let’s just say you decide to shoot back at your opponents deep weight, and let’s just say the best case scenario is you and your opponent go stick for stick on the deep weight for the rest of the frame until now it’s your hammer shot. You’ll be shooting your hammer with two of your opponent’s weights working against you. A short weight blocking the cross shots and a potential 2 or deep 1 working and possibly blocking your lag lanes. This is a very scary position to be in because a lot can go wrong. This position also might be about the best defense for a player shooting against the hammer. Depending on where the deep weight is, maybe you stick it for 2 and you’re happy. Maybe you stick it for 1 and you’re unhappy. Maybe you hit and run and let your opponent steal 1 and you’re unhappy. Maybe your opponent’s deep weight is a light 2 or even touching the line for only 1 and you decide to lag. If you out lag the deep weight for a deeper 2, 3, or even a 4, you’re very relieved and very happy. If you lag off at that point and let your opponent steal 2 or 3 points from you, you’re very unhappy. At any rate, you’re potentially and likely putting a lot of pressure on your hammer shot if you choose to pass the short weight and lag deep into the horse-collar.
Most players will try to play straight up and go weight for weight to beat their opponent with good lags on a clean board. That appears to be the strategy that Keaton was using here. It’s kind of like shuffleboard 101 as to not get yourself into trouble. With this strategy you’re saying, “I can hit every weight anywhere on the table and I can lag better than my opponent”. It’s similar to returning every shot in tennis or ping pong and waiting for your opponent to make a mistake and then capitalizing on that mistake. In shuffleboard you take advantage of situations if and when you’re opponent misses a weight, or you try to create action situations if you find yourself behind by 4 or more points.
Maxwell controlled this game with short weights and was lagging very well the entire match. If you were to ask Keathahn after the match if he wishes he would have done anything differently my guess is he’d say he wishes he would have called an audible and switched up his strategy earlier and either tried to bump up that short weight to create action on the board for go arounds, or tried to do a little baby wrap just barely going around the short weight to force his opponent to try to shoot a combo or try to pick out your weight. By doing one of these two things he might have been able to steal a few points and/or force Maxwell to change his strategy. Maybe Keaton felt he had hammer on the lagging end and didn’t want to get aggressive yet because he was still in the game. Maybe he thought Maxwell would get complacent with his lead and start lagging 1s. Maybe a hundred different things. One thing is certain, Maxwell’s lag was dialed in this game based on how many deep weights he lagged and how he closed out the game. He ended the game with a solid 3. If Maxwell lags a 1 or a 2 in that spot to put himself on 13 or 14 points, I bet you see Keaton switch his strategy and pull out all the stops on the next frame and start playing aggressively to create action. I think Maxwell knew that too which is why he pushed for the end of the table on that final hammer shot to close out the game.
Shuffleboard is a very fun and very addictive game because of all the layers of strategy. I once heard someone say that shuffleboard is like chess with hand eye coordination. I hope I didn’t lose you with my long winded explanation of the strategy here. Keep playing shuffleboard and I’ll hope to see you at a tournament one of these days! :)
