Lack of Indic institutions in the country is the reason why ancient texts can be so easily manipulated by some distorians. Thankyou mam for this case study.
Ms Jain is an outstanding historian . Please feature her in more videos. As an aspiring historian, i have got to know more about the practice of sati . She should be made the head of history council in India .
More and more scholars like you with Indic knowledge should come up.Time comes when young people will listen to you than old laggards.Heartfelt thanks to you.
Thank you madam for this informative talk. For our new generation and majority of the Hindus to know about their history, these talks will be helpful but they may not be enough. I India this subject of Indic religious studies should be taken up as university courses. Only then it will reach the masses.
Most of our scripts are rewritten by twisting it and purpose to only malign our scripts. Manusmriti is one among this, Zakhir Nayak uses all these and lead us to confusion and we feel ourselves as disgrace,,,
The Manusmriti was itself compiled by Sir William Jones from 50 different versions of the Manusmriti that existed at that time. What else did these different versions contain that the British left out. The Manusmriti is an inauthentic text which Dharmics bear no responsibility.
Now let’s look at Hinduism. Like Judaism and Christianity, Hinduism endorses the view that men should rule over women in all areas of life. Women, along with lower caste Hindus are prohibited from studying the Vedas, which are the core Hindu scriptures. Women and lower caste Hindus are also barred from performing fundamental Hindu rituals. This is emphasized in the central Hindu legal text Manusmirti. Manusmriti (9.18) reads: "For women no rite is performed with sacred texts, thus the law is settled; women, who are destitute of strength and destitute of the knowledge of vedic texts are as impure as falsehood itself that is a fixed rule" The notion that women cannot study the Vedas or perform Hindu religious rites based on the Vedas is affirmed in commentaries on Manusmirti, like that of Medhatithi. Medhatihi also emphasizes general female inferiority, commenting on the phrase: “destitute of organs and devoid of sacred texts, women are ‘false’.” Medhatithi explains this further: "Destitute of organs'__;organ' here stands for strength:---courage, patience, intelligence, energy, and so forth are absent in women: that is why they are prone to become over-powered by sinful propensities. Hence it is that they have to be carefully guarded" ' Women are false on account of the inconstancy of their character and affections, they are deprecated as being False'" The Hindu tradition emphasizes that women must always be completely dependent on men and subject to male authority. Like the Christian tradition, the Hindu tradition likens the authority of the husband to that of God. Hindu texts even demand that a wife worships her husband as a god. Thus, Manusmriti (5.147-156) states: 147. By a girl, by a young woman, or even by an aged one, nothing must be done independently, even in her own house. 148. In childhood a female must be subject to her father, in youth to her husband, when her lord is dead to her sons; a woman must never be independent. 151. Him to whom her father may give her, or her brother with the father's permission, she shall obey as long as he lives, and when he is dead, she must not insult(his memory). 154. Though destitute of virtue, or seeking pleasure (elsewhere) or devoid of good qualities, (yet) a husband must be constantly worshipped as a god by a faithful wife. 155. No sacrifice, no vow, no fast must be performed by women apart (from their husbands); if a wife obeys her husband, she will for that (reason alone) be exalted in heaven. 156. A faithful wife, who desires to dwell (after death) with her husband, must never do anything that might displease him who took her hand, whether he be alive or dead. Other Hindu scriptures, like the Puranas, also emphasize that the husband is to be worshipped as a god. The wife’s religious duties center on such worship. In this way, the wife should obey her husband, worship his feet, and drink the water in which his feet are washed. The Skanda Purana states: Book 3 section 2 ,chapter 7 verse 33-39: 33. She should never transgress the words of her husband. This is the vow of women: this is the highest virtue and the holiest of worships. 36. Desirous of taking holy dip in a sacred Tirtha, she should drink the water with which her husband's feet are washed. To a woman the husband is superior to lord Sankara and lord visnu.
37. If a woman transgresses the injunction of her husband and performs holy rites, fasts and other observances she takes away the longevity of her husband. After her death she falls into hell. 39. This is said to be the greatest and only sacred observance of women that they should resolve to take their food only after worshipping the feet of their husbands. Imagine drinking the backwash of your Hindu husband's feet! For Hinduism, the husband’s authority gives him the right to physically discipline his wife. Manusmriti prescribes the beating of wives with various objects. Manusmriti (8.299) It states:" The wife the son, the slave, the servant and the uterine brother shall be beaten with a rope or a split bamboo when they have committed a fault. In prescribing physical discipline for wives, Manusmirti affirms views which are common in other texts of Hindu scripture including the Vedas and the Puranas. Garuda Purana (1.109.31) states that women in general should be beaten with harshness. Indeed, women are compared to drums. A woman is like a drum in that it is in her nature to be beaten. Garuda Purana(1.109.31) states: "Wicked persons, artisans, slaves, defiled ones, drums and women are softned by being beaten; they do not deserve gentle handling" Now, what if a Hindu wife refuses to have sex? The Vedas (Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 6.4.7) teach the following: "If she is not willing, he should buy her over; and if she is still unyielding, he should strike her with a stick or with the hand and proceed {i.e to have sex with her despite her resistance}, repeating the following mantra " with power and glory, I take away your glory'" The Skanda Purana generally warns a wife against resisting beatings from her husband. If she does resist, she will suffer divine punishment by being reborn in another life as an animal such as a cat. Skanda Purana Book 3 section 2 ,chapter 7 verse 43 says:"On being struck, if she were to strike him back, she is reborn as a tigress or a cat" Just like in Christianity, in Hinduism women are prohibited from seeking divorce from their husbands. They’re also banned from remarrying after their husbands die .According to traditional Hinduism, the ideal wife burns herself to death in the sati ritual after her husband dies.

To put weight on position over dadaji position on justifying caste based discrimination based on dharma I used to say "sorry to your understanding of dharma who was practicing Sati" In the last fews years I could understand how much I was wrong in understanding Sati.. and I was doing what people desprate for demeaning Indic rituals and text wanted me to do. Mam, you said (at 7:50 min)in the Ramayana, Madri wife of Pandu....which is wrong as everyone knows that it is not in Ramayana, it is in Mahabharat....please correct it
Hindu way of life was equally popular in south also, and between North and south there was lot of movement of religious leaders and common men for pilgrimage etc. Then why the custom of sati DID NOT SPREAD TO ANY HINDU COMMUNITY in the south? Another thing is there are a lot of references to widows in the sashtras, even aboput their re-marriage to some other men.If SATI was prevalent then, how come there were widows living at all? Hindu religion has many DEVAS and DEVIES in certain pockets of India who have no reference in any of the scripts. May be those GODS, and many customs ;like SATI were just local practices later own made as part of religion. Some practices are totally contradictory between North and south, b though both are connected to Hinduism!
सती was first noted in Greek accounts in North West provinsh during their attacks , and at the same time no one was commiting this practice in rest India As the foreign invasion came to inner India this practice started , Invasion never reached the far south , But सती is present in Tamil literature ,
Actually sahamarana is there in our culture but it was not forceful or mandatory even for childless or sonless widows but evil people started murdering child widows in that way some used to force their widow daughter in laws to commit sati to not their responsibility etc etc. Ram mohan's own sister in law was forced to commit sati and in Lahore one child widow was murdered in that way.
Sati was just a weapon of widow hindu women to protect their chastity from islamic invaders christian missionaries spread propaganda using pimps like rammohan roy !
@@Seoyeaji921 Rammohan was a pimp who wanted india to be a christian country, opposed sanskrit and murti puja dont give references of such dalals he settled in england after getting hefty sum for his dalali he didnt even had brother from where his sister in law came? dont propagate false narratives spread by christian missionaries and their pimps communists (who themselves slaughtered 10000 dalits in marichjhapi west bengal)
In Ramayana there is also example of Tara, after vali was killed she didn't commit sati, I think she became queen of Sugreeva, and in Mahabharata did any pushed Uttara in the fire
Ma'am this is an honest and unbiased question. I just wanted to know whether our texts mention something of similar sort for widowers whose wives pass away before him?
it prevailed in Europe too..... they call it religion of pagans ...... their also lady will accompany in pyre wid king or great warrior as direct entry to Valhalla....... wish mam wd research more..... but by choice not forced
Hmm that’s an interesting study to look for. I don’t know how the story will turn out because as far as I know that pagans were witch hunted and the civilisation was destroyed by the onset of Christianity.
Yes this is right. Vikings and some Germanic tribes performed widow killings too. This ist so barbaric. Romans and Greeks criticized these traditions centuries ago.
My request to everyone there is evidence of sati in my Sitapur district (U.P) In the village name chamkhar Where the sati jaidevi whose younger brother is still alive and he is a doctor . Sati Jaidevi in the presence of police without any inflammable material just by looking towards the sun incarnate the fire But leftist historian and other book writer also the government never told about it But anyone have doubt please come and check what I m saying . Before come to any conclusion please visit this place Because in hindu culture it is always a belief that couple have to be together for 7 birth But for attaining sati there should be true love between husband and wife and also it was not mandatory

huh?? I never cared if Sati was a mandate in the Hindu religious scriptures. What I know that it was Very much prevalent even in the early 1900s in India, in my state of West Bengal. I don't need History books for that. There were living witnesses who could tell you that the Brahmins never made it look like the window had a choice. It was done very much against her will.
It was prevalent in Bengal but primarily among zamindar class. Also it was like 2-3 cases in a million, making it a rare event. Not all but most of this were voluntary.(In reference to a report in 1826, in Bengal presidency) The reason for discussing sati is that the literature referring it give the impression that it was widespread and was religiously sanctioned. The reality differs.

Not all widows were forced to commit or selfchoicely committed it but yes child widows were some times murdered and young windows were forced to commit it only in cases if there were no son but niyoga option was there for child widows or leading chaste life and sati was not compulsory but many cruel people didn't let them live.
@@manishadash2584 actually didi it was not mandatory for widows but people in Bengal used to force them to commit sati and some child widows were murdered but widows with sons were not forced nor did they commit nor they were murdered.idk why they had a problem with childless widows living in this world. Alas!
You are wrong. Brahmans were not bound the sati tradition. This was the tradition of ancient warrior families of India (sati found in Karnataka, Goa, Kerala and other south states (part)also. There are hundreds of Mahasati statues and worshipped by a community called halepaiks (ancient warriors =sanatana warriors )and others.
Sorry but it was not second marriage but through niyoga which was a option of having son for young or little childless widows but humans are cruel so they started murdering child widows and forcing young childless widows to commit sati.

TRUTH is your own experience.... believing blindly anyone elses opinion, interpretation or their own experience is not your own experience, yours is yours and theirs is theirs. They may be similar, but just as twins in the same womb still they do not occupy the same space, so it is with every individual Soul. The Adharmic Abrahamic religious traditions teach that the Soul is mortal has one life then dies and needs blind Belief in their version in of god, of which there are thousands of different versions all claiming to be the one true cult....cult is whatever one cult-ivates, one's first cult is their own family, and family cult-ure religious or not Traditions. In the DHARMIC TRADITION of SANATANA DHARMA the Soul called the ATMA is Immortal Eternal Deathless Undying never born, can not be harmed by fire or water, cut by sword or harmed in any way.....THOU ART THAT....we have had the wool pulled over our eyes to belive blindly that we are not the Soul, that we have a Soul and that the Soul dies....but is this really so? Pause and reflect a while....the life is in the sperm/seed of the father, is propelled by the life-force to meet with the ovum in the mother's womb, penetrates it , joins, and the single cell with seed planted in the body of the cell begins to split in two and multiply forming the foetus in the womb, every foetus in every womb practices all 84 yoga postures in the womb, before birth, then after birth the first breath and life outside the womb begins for the new born body of the child, this body rapidly grows, as the years go by, the body made up of cells gets bigger to the point the original baby body is no more, the baby has become a child many times bigger than the baby body....how is that? The old cells that have died are replaced by new cells created from the food eaten, so we can observe the body constantly dying and being replaced cell by cell, every 7 years every single cell has been replaced, eventually the complete body dies as the cells can no longer be replaced......so in the body everything changes.....one is born without a developed thinking mind, this too constantly changes as information is increased and the thoughts of the thinking process constantly change come and go entering and exiting the mind, the emotions in the body too constantly changing coming and going.....YET SOMETHING OR RATHER SOMEONE DOES NOT CHANGE AT ALL.....THE CONSCIOUSNESS WHICH IS WHAT WE CALL SOUL OR ATMA, it is simply the unbroken constantly observing witnessing awareness, pure and simple just That as it is, THOU ART THAT.....you have an intellectual mind and you have a body, but you are not the mind.... because it wasn't there when your body was born, and you are not the body.... Otherwise you would already be dead....for the original baby body no longer exists it has died cell by cell and been replaced with the body you have now... You don't have to believe any of this BLINDLY.....just contemplate that thou art the witnessing Consciousness that has not changed at all and has simply observed internally the thoughts and emotions changing and aware externally the body and phenomenal material world changing.....yet you have remained the same unchanging observer..THOU ART THAT....To grasp this concept mentally is not so difficult...for it is your own actual experience....for you to comprehend in your heart this Reality that you are a SOUL and that you have a body and mind.....is not yet your own direct perception of your own experience of yourself as pure Soul......this awakening of Consciousness is called self realization....to know through direct Personal Experience that Thou art Immortal ATMA....the Teaching of the Dharmic Tradition of SANATANA DHARMA specially in the SONG OF GOD called the BHAGAVAD-GITA explains how one can experience themselves as SOUL ATMA this YOGA called self realization is achieved through Transcendental sound vibration frequency.... Just as you put a stringed instrument on a piano and press a key the strings on the instrument will vibrate in resonance.....so it is when one vibrates with their tongue and mouth and Voice the Transcendental sound vibration frequency of HARE KṚṢṆA HARE KṚṢṆA KṚṢṆA KṚṢṆA HARE HARE HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE one Experiences themselves as SOUL ATMA CONSCIOUSNESS as SAT CHIT ANANDA TRUTH KNOWLEDGE BLISS...No blind Belief required, no religion required....just to experiment with the science of self realization and experience it directly for yourself. At least read the BHAGAVAD-GITA for yourself at least once and see if there are any answers to your questions in there.....no forced conversion, no Bible bashing..... you do it, you get it....don't take my word for it...and please don't believe me blindly....you choose in your own free will...find out for yourself..that you can actually Experience your own Soul Self and the Om-presence. of the OM-nipotent OM-neiscience 🙏🏽💜

Knowledge is power so i am in to watch, n it's really horrible to even think of this, yet maam deliberately says it was ONLY 40. N maam is there any season where you talk about marriage of a widow in books N practice
Sati was a social evil started by people. It is not a religious thing but what religious things that are there in Quran against women, you should focus on that. Beating up your wives is ok according to Quran. Man can marry multiple times and have more than 1 wife. Your Mohamed married a 6 year old girl lol and had x with her when she was 8. Halala of women. A wife may remarry her ex-husband if and only if she marries another man, they have sex, and then this second man divorces her. Slave girls- Islam allows deep immorality with women who are in their most helpless condition. This crime is reprehensible, but Allah wills it nonetheless Mature men are allowed to marry prepubescent girls.
Women get beheaded by their husbands according to sharia law which is mentioned in your religious scriptures. If they are accused of being unfaithful or anything else they have prove their innocence or else they get beheaded. If they accuse their husbands of the same, in this case too the women have to prove their innocence. This what how your Islam treats women. Triple talaq and many other evils I can give you..On the other hand, Sati was started by people which was a social evil not a religious thing. Yet
our hindu women committed jauhar sati coz of ur rapist islamic leaders otherwise they used to rape them wont even spare their dead body (necrophilia) u have no room to talk !
Sati is not mandated or advised for a woman when her husband dies. Some great women who had great yogic accumen could voluntarily leave the body whenever they so desired and sometimes, both husband and wife go to the forest and through their yogic power leave the body and proceed to their next abode either another world(loka) or take birth again in this world or attain mukthi or birthless permanence in Paramathma. Sometimes when husband dies a wife could proceed with him provided she has this kind of yogic accumen and she also knows that she could do this act without any adverse consequences to her or persons around her.
And Do you know one thing No one offers Agni to Sati's pyre if Pyre is not ablazed itself , woman is not qualified to become Sati.... This truth is not told us by these Scholars😦🤨🤨🤨🤨
What is written in religious book(fake), is neither important nor interesting .what was explained by Purohit ,Brahmins of that time, was in practice. Inhumanly!
Blaming it all on the Brahmins, not knowing the truth is a sign of laziness of not doing a due diligence on what really happened. In fact, Brahmins have been the biggest target of the colonizers, mainly the portuguese & british. They did not have any protection at all once the whole society was brainwashed gradually by means of english education & regurgitated social science theories and made scapegoats out of them.
How can u confirm that the religious books are fake? Ofcourse it contain many myths. But certain things are needed to be taken seriously , because it shows how was the society at that time. And again how do you know what the purohit and Brahmins preached at that time?
Blaming on brahmins should not be done because ram mohan roy and ishwar chandra vidyasagar who were brahmins were also against widow killing and forceful sati and stopped people from doing it because being brahmins and studying scriptures they knew that it was not mandatory and if you are talking about caste then many kayasthas and vaidyas also supported widow murder and sahamara and many opposed it like vivekananda.
sati may or may not been mentioned in books but the fact is no one ever care much about rule books in day to day life....people may have practised it in society blindly.. our constitution and law books say dowry in marriage and corruption by govt employees are crime but we all know what is the social reality...if someone finds these law books after 10000 years they will think this country was such a pious place... so I don't buy what books say about the social situations of that time....we will never know the absolute truth....we do many wrong things in daily life which are clearly mentioned as crime in law books...these so called ancient books are also written by few people and u can't trust humans completely..and according to all these books man and women were never treated equally in ancient times ...she didn't mention a single line where it says that man would self immolate to live in heavens for long time after wife died ...laws were always for women..that's what patriarchy means
Yours is a very superficial colonial gaze based on reading years of distorted literature written by the chrisitan theologians whose foremost goal was to creat faultlines in our societies. They did this all over the world for the past 500 years....starting from dictionaries to translations of various texts, from Shastras to Smritis. Your idea of patriarchy comes from a very maligned system of marxism, something we have never had in our Samskriti. As a Brahmin I can confirm Sati has Vedic recognition, don't fool people. Just go and see Rajasthan and U.P there are so many Sati temple and devotees if today government permit Sat practice there will be many supporter. What is wrong will be wrong don't justify.
Today many Hindus practice karwa chauth but it is no where is vedas. Sati is wife Shiva that's why there are temples. And I am not saying there was sati pratha practiced, but what we are taught is all widowed women were killed. That is the problem. And Brahmin is not by birth so don't say as a Brahmin.
How interesting. The life of asceticism was always open to widows, but no mention of remarriage. The new generation of pandits should read the book of Ruth to draw inspiration when writing new Smrithis.
@@lifethruvideos some rules are in the books never to be enforced in real life. Is there any story of any woman who got widowed and remarried in any of the puranas?
Abhilash Nambiar In Mahabharata, when Arjun married Uloop , she was a widow. Sugriva married wife of his slain brother, Bali. In Gupta Dynasty, some Kings married wives of their brothers. Moving further, Mandodari married Vibhushan after death of Ravana. Similarly a lot of examples are there. Do some good amount of research before writing anything on Hinduism.
@@lifethruvideos you did a lot of research before answering it. Sugriva did not marry his slain brother's wife, he appropriated her after having him killed. Same with Vibhushan. Such things were common in those days. That gave one of the incentives for Sati. These women did not want to be forced on to their brothers-in-law and lose their chastity. Kings marrying the wives of their brothers are not the best example, especially when the brothers are rivals for the same throne. Widows are not married, they are appropriated. Ideally your brother's wife was to be thought of as your mother if she is older to you or sister if she is younger to you. Lakshmana always called Site as Sita Miya. Now about Uloopi, she was not a widow when she married Arjuna. There was a point in Mahabharata were Arjuna was killed and then revived by Uloopi. So maybe she was Arjuna's widow for a little while. Your case is weak.
Abhilash Nambiar my case is not weak. Ur mind is closed enough to seek the truth. U r not open to any fact at all and is satisfied with Macaulayan system of education. Read K M ganguli’s translated Mahababharat. Uloopi was already widowed when her first husband was killed by Garud. So, bro don’t try to find reasons to always demean ur culture wherever good things are happening. Good bye, narrow minded victim of Macaulayan education system. 👍

@@tuhingomes6520 agnipariksha is not sati. These are 2 different things. Also, agnipariksha incident is not mentioned in Valmiki Ramayan. It is a story from folklore and the authenticity of the same is questionable.
She does not know basic history. She does not know why Rammohan Roy got the title Raja. She said Rammohan Roy was a Christian. She said Sati was not there in Bengal. It was widespread until the British banned it because of the campaign of Raja Rammohan Roy, who argued that Sati Pratha is not a part of Hinduism.
Dear Lady please stop making apologies for this atrocious, murderous ritual, stemming from the 6th book of Ramayana, whereby Sita burns herself to compound for Ram's suspicions! Evidently the story is fabricated because pious Prophets do not behave that way!
A widow burned alive on the funeral pyre of her dead husband is called a "suttee"; in Sanskrit and Hindi texts, she is a "sati" or "good woman." All over India are sati stones that commemorate these deaths, the earliest dated definitively to the year 510. Those women who refused sati were forced to become temple prostitutes. Temple prostitution was widespread in Hinduism. "These women were not a homogenous group of mindless victims or soulless fanatics," writes Wendy Doniger, "but individuals who made various choices for various reasons and had many voices and cannot be sorted into two tidy groups of those who jumped and those who were pushed. "Some were murdered for land or money or family honor; some sacrificed themselves for religious reasons; some committed suicide out of guilt, despair, or terror. Some resisted, and ran away, and lived to tell the tale; some tried to resist and failed." Wendy Doniger. De Nobli like many Christians wanted to go soft on Hinduism and hoped Brahmins would reform themselves. Gandhi on the other hand wanted shock therapy as most Hindu temples in India, Goa and Cambodia were totally morally degraded. "I say that in this sense God does not dwell in some of the temples. Or if He does, it is only as much as in a brothel. If this statement of mine has hurt any Hindus I am sorry for it. But for the sake of truth and Hinduism I cannot either take away from or add to my statement.” (Gandhi Research Foundation)
It was not prevalent all over India. No evidence has emerged for that, except for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh Bengal, Assam and a few other N Eastern states. A handful of instances perhaps in one S Indian State Tamil Nadu. Even in these regions it was very localised . So Doni ger clearly lied there. It never occurred with the ferocity with which tens of thousands of "witches" were burnt in Europe.
Wives could be legally auctioned in England and apparently the last occurrence was in the Twentieth Century! Slavery was abolished in the US only in the Eighteen Sixties , and the native genocide continued even thereafter.
I think Wendy Dongier referred to Devadasi custom, which has been wrongly associated with prostitution. Devadasi is similar to a Christian nun. They were highly revered members of society. It was never a punishment for refusing sati. When some temples lost royal patronage, many Devadasis resorted to prostitution for livelihood. But in places like Puri dham, the practice never went in that direction.
William Carey, the author of the Dictionary of the Bengali Language and a member of the Serampore Mission in Calcutta conducted a 'Sati census' and recorded at least 438 cases in the year within just a thirty-mile radius of the city. Stop this bull crap.

Sati has many Vedic support. It us following Parasara Smriti 4.32 If a woman follows her departed lord, by burning herself on the same funeral pyre, she will dwell in heaven for as many years as there are hairs on the human frame, - which reach the number of three crores and a half. Vishnu Dharma Sutra 25.14 After the death of her husband, to preserve her chastity, or to ascend the pile after him. Agni Purana 222.223 The widow who practices self-control and austerities after the death of her husband, goes to heaven…the widow who burns herself on the same funeral pire wth her husband also goes to heaven. In Mahabharata madri the wife of king pandu became sati. So sati has definite Vedic root but it was not mandatory. 🙏🙏
Those aren’t Vedic texts. Those are smrtis. If you want to look at smriti look at The grihya sutras, which deal from matters ranging from birth to death. They don’t mention Sati. Neither do we have Buddhists criticizing it at the time the way they did with animal sacrifices
@@AbhiN_1289 According to manusmriti smriti and veda are two prime source of dharma. The 3 Vedas talk about 3 prime gods : fire, air and sun. Rest are told by smriti. exactly, people are under the impression that women in Hinduism were forced to do Sati. They weren’t from the start. But it begs the question why don’t Buddhist texts in the end of the Vedic period don’t criticize the practice like they did with animal sacrifices?
All the Brahmans should be ashamed of themselves, their Vedas need to be translated by foreigners and Brahmans considered themselves at the top of human hierarchy. What is she talking King pandu was in Mahabharata, King pandu of Hastinapur. She is saying king pandu in Ramayana I seriously doubt her research, she's made many errors in this speech itself.
You have Incorrect understanding of Varnas. Brahmins are just regular people. They were always poor because acquiring wealth is VERY ABrahmin. They are not any better or worse than other Varnas = be it Shurdras, Vaishyas or Kshatriyas. In fact these Varnas are based on one's own Guna (aptitude, discipline, interests & work ethics). It is like holding a degree. Anyone from one Varna can be anyone else. Vedas & other Sanatani texts were translated by christian jesuit missionaries, who either had not much knowledge of Samskrit or did it with a malicious intent to malign the texts & fed the same garbage to the Hindus by outlawing Gurukul/Pathshalas & introducing social science by english education. People like yourself & the last 7-8 generations have grown up by internalizing this garbage written on all of us. Instead of doing a thorough research on the truth, we are fighting among ourselves based on colonial narratives.
Sati was an obligatory religious duty in ancient Bharat and there was no relaxation from this practice. It was considered highest honour otherwise widows were treated in an extremely humiliating manner so for them sati was the only option. The learned Lady is unsuccessfully project Hindus as very liberal minded persons. The cruel and inhuman rite of Sati was legally forcefully abolished by Lord Clive.Distortion of history is an integral part of Hindu Psyche.A Hindu by nature can not be liberal and broad minded.Sati was and will remain a black spot on the history of Bharat.

So it seems her conclusion can be summarized as: "Sati was not religiously obligatory according to various Hindu texts BECAUSE a widow could ALSO choose the option of living in austerity." So it was either immolation or austere poverty. Hmmm... with such modern-day attempts to explain away the past as being "not so bad", it is little wonder why so many widows in India's Hindu society today continue to be treated with contempt!

1. You say, “The number of instances of Sati post-independence do not match the amount of work done on the subject”. So according to you there should be 100 articles on 100 petty thefts and 1 article on 1 act of Sati. Heinousness of the crime is not important. 2. You say that in Rigveda 10.18.7, the last word ‘agre’ was replaced by the word Agne’. While the word ‘Agne’ fits the context better, even otherwise, with the word ‘Agre’ also the Hymn was understood to mean widow burning as the same was read out before the widow climbed the pyre as prescribed in the procedure for Sati as stated in Shuddhitattva. (Kane.2.1.633). Even Rigveda 10.18.8 speaks about Sati. Here perhaps her husband's brother persuades her to not commit Sati. Though these Hymns are not witness to the commission of Sati, they are certainly witness to the practice of Sati in the Vedic times. Several texts even say that Brahmin widows should not commit Sati. (Kane. 2.1.627) While you say Megasthenes does not mention Sati, Kane mentions many foreign historians-travelers like Diodorus, Siculus, Strabo and Arab writer Al Beruni etc., who referred to Sati. Kane says that there is epigraphic evidence for Sati from 510 AD. 4. Though texts avoid referring to Sati, some texts ‘encourage’ it by offering rewards. Parashara Smriti says ‘a woman who follows her husband in death shall dwell in heaven for 3.5 Crore years’ just like Koran says that if a Muslim dies for Allah, he will get rewards in heaven. 5. Thanks to British Evangelists like William Carrey who said that there were 438 instances of Sati in 1803 around Calcutta, that they rose from 378 to 839 between 1815 and 1818 and to Social reformers like Raja Rammohan Roy and the Governor General William Bentinck who made it a punishable offence by his Bengal Sati Regulation, 1829. But the practice survived, and the independent India had to enact The Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987. 6. Lastly please don’t present V.P.Kane’s picture as that of ‘H.T.Colebrooke’, and please try to pronounce Sanskrit words and names properly and read your history properly before preaching to others and don't insert Pandu in Ramayan.
I can recall only two instances of brides immolating themselves in the entire Mahabharata. Madri and Karna's wife. Although some of the Dharmashastra texts provide anugamana / sahagamana as an option for widows, the rarity and sporadic localisation of the occurrences and Sayana's interpretation of the cited verse , are strong arguments against yours on the Vedic sanction.

Sati was not mandated. Those who flunked out were drugged and thrown into the fire(the 'typographical error' in Hindu texts). The Portuguese immediately banned sati on arrival but brahmins converted them to sacred prostitutes ( devadasis), say scholars. In a village in rajasthan I recently saw sati worship. Shame.
Reynold D'Souza wrong. Sati was the woman’s choice. No one was “drugged” or thrown into the fire. Hindu people always had respect for their women if they were true holy people. The Brahmins didn’t convert anyone to “sacred prostitutes”. When the Portuguese came. They wanted to take over India and convert people to Christians. The only way to take over was to slowly make the people ashamed of their culture so they start despising themselves. Many things like Sati Ritual were adulterated with horrible things that never happened. The Portuguese were the ones who took widows as prostitutes for their own benefit. History is always written by those who r in power. In this case it was the Portuguese and a few years later it would be the British. The Hindu Texts are adulterated by the Christian and Mughal thought process to make the people of the Hindu culture to feel ashamed of themselves. U can c it even in the population of today’s student bodies of Asia. They are so influenced by the West culture and British culture that they’d prefer it over their own. And it isn’t their fault either. The text books they are getting teach them crap. In Rajasthan I would like to point out that it is not the most safe place for women compared to Maharashtra or Delhi or Karnataka.
Manusmriti is highly interpolated by Anti-Hindu people
Bhagwat geeta and Vedas are only true in sanatan dharma,,,
Now let’s look at Hinduism.
Manusmriti (9.18) reads: "For women no rite is performed with sacred texts, thus the law is settled; women, who are destitute of strength and destitute of the knowledge of vedic texts are as impure as falsehood itself that is a fixed rule"
The notion that women cannot study the Vedas or perform Hindu religious rites based on the Vedas is affirmed in commentaries on Manusmirti, like that of Medhatithi. Medhatihi also emphasizes general female inferiority, commenting on the phrase: “destitute of organs and devoid of sacred texts, women are ‘false’.” Medhatithi explains this further:
"Destitute of organs'__;organ' here stands for strength:---courage, patience, intelligence, energy, and so forth are absent in women: that is why they are prone to become over-powered by sinful propensities. Hence it is that they have to be carefully guarded" ' Women are false on account of the inconstancy of their character and affections, they are deprecated as being False'"
The Hindu tradition emphasizes that women must always be completely dependent on men and subject to male authority. Like the Christian tradition, the Hindu tradition likens the authority of the husband to that of God. Hindu texts even demand that a wife worships her husband as a god. Thus, Manusmriti (5.147-156) states:
The Skanda Purana states: Book 3 section 2 ,chapter 7 verse 33-39:
Garuda Purana(1.109.31) states: "Wicked persons, artisans, slaves, defiled ones, drums and women are softned by being beaten; they do not deserve gentle handling"
Now, what if a Hindu wife refuses to have sex? The Vedas (Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 6.4.7) teach the following: "If she is not willing, he should buy her over; and if she is still unyielding, he should strike her with a stick or with the hand and proceed {i.e to have sex with her despite her resistance}, repeating the following mantra " with power and glory, I take away your glory'"
The Skanda Purana generally warns a wife against resisting beatings from her husband. If she does resist, she will suffer divine punishment by being reborn in another life as an animal such as a cat. Skanda Purana Book 3 section 2 ,chapter 7 verse 43 says:"On being struck, if she were to strike him back, she is reborn as a tigress or a cat"
Just like in Christianity, in Hinduism women are prohibited from seeking divorce from their husbands. They’re also banned from remarrying after their husbands die .According to traditional Hinduism, the ideal wife burns herself to death in the sati ritual after her husband dies.
Zakir Nayak has plenty to feel disgraced in his own relegion

सती was first noted in Greek accounts in North West provinsh during their attacks , and at the same time no one was commiting this practice in rest India
As the foreign invasion came to inner India this practice started ,
Invasion never reached the far south
,
But सती is present in Tamil literature ,
Actually sahamarana is there in our culture but it was not forceful or mandatory even for childless or sonless widows but evil people started murdering child widows in that way some used to force their widow daughter in laws to commit sati to not their responsibility etc etc. Ram mohan's own sister in law was forced to commit sati and in Lahore one child widow was murdered in that way.

I don't need History books for that. There were living witnesses who could tell you that the Brahmins never made it look like the window had a choice. It was done very much against her will.
It was prevalent in Bengal but primarily among zamindar class. Also it was like 2-3 cases in a million, making it a rare event. Not all but most of this were voluntary.(In reference to a report in 1826, in Bengal presidency)

The Skanda Purana states: Book 3 section 2 ,chapter 7 verse 33-39:
@@beingsane women can write vedas but should not read them.

Just as you put a stringed instrument on a piano and press a key the strings on the instrument will vibrate in resonance.....so it is when one vibrates with their tongue and mouth and Voice the Transcendental sound vibration frequency of HARE KṚṢṆA HARE KṚṢṆA KṚṢṆA KṚṢṆA HARE HARE HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE one Experiences themselves as SOUL ATMA CONSCIOUSNESS as
SAT CHIT ANANDA
TRUTH KNOWLEDGE BLISS...No blind Belief required, no religion required....just to experiment with the science of self realization and experience it directly for yourself.

A wife may remarry her ex-husband if and only if she marries another man, they have
sex, and then this second man divorces her.
Slave girls- Islam allows deep immorality with women who are in their most helpless condition. This crime
is reprehensible, but Allah wills it nonetheless
Mature men are allowed to marry prepubescent girls.
Mulla rasulullah.
Really? Rich coming from Islam that actually burns women to death even now
Sati is not mandated or advised for a woman when her husband dies.
Are the facts true??....How to verify those??

Women were on the forefront of protecting the Dharma, the Samskriti, the family structure. They were the best educators, mentors, leaders and even warriors. What you are trying to do is applying a set of superficial marxist theories that you are so brainwashed with, while marx & his theories do not hold any relevance anymore.

How interesting. The life of asceticism was always open to widows, but no mention of remarriage. The new generation of pandits should read the book of Ruth to draw inspiration when writing new Smrithis.
Abhilash Nambiar who told remarriage was not an option ? Read the actual unadulterated version of manusmriti and Vedas. Remarriage is always an option

You're the one of the fool across the world
I think Wendy Dongier referred to Devadasi custom, which has been wrongly associated with prostitution.

It us following
Parasara Smriti 4.32
If a woman follows her departed lord, by burning herself on the same funeral pyre, she will dwell in heaven for as many years as there are hairs on the human frame, - which reach the number of three crores and a half.
Vishnu Dharma Sutra 25.14
After the death of her husband, to preserve her chastity, or to ascend the pile after him.
Agni Purana 222.223
The widow who practices self-control and austerities after the death of her husband, goes to heaven…the widow who burns herself on the same funeral pire wth her husband also goes to heaven.
In Mahabharata madri the wife of king pandu became sati.
So sati has definite Vedic root but it was not mandatory.
🙏🙏
Those aren’t Vedic texts. Those are smrtis.
If you want to look at smriti look at
The grihya sutras, which deal from matters ranging from birth to death. They don’t mention Sati. Neither do we have Buddhists criticizing it at the time the way they did with animal sacrifices
@@AbhiN_1289
According to manusmriti smriti and veda are two prime source of dharma. The 3 Vedas talk about 3 prime gods : fire, air and sun. Rest are told by smriti. That's the structure of hindu dharma shastra.
So likely veda will not say anything about funeral. Finding funeral in veda is very foolish activity. Only smriti can say about it.
Sati woman will go to heaven. Those woman who would like to go to heaven becomes sati. Others not necessary. 🙏🙏
@@arnabkumarbanerjee8150 sati means chaste. You are talking sahagamana. If that is the case then the smritis don’t say what happens if a widow doesn’t burn herself. exactly, people are under the impression that women in Hinduism were forced to do Sati.
Shesaid it by mistake
And Brahmins should not be ashamed for what foreigners did to our tests and made our religion look monstrous
It was Just a propaganda of Islamist and leftist and did you forget that you are one of them you are an Islamist and still you are doing propaganda against Hindus still your propaganda is not stopped it tells everything that after independence the Christian propaganda of sati was adopted by Islamists and leftists to downgrade hinduism but I think you should focus on Islamic evil cause islam and muslim community needs numerous changes coz your islamic scriptures support sex slavery, prostitution, loot, killings, terrorism, burka, parda, polygamy, pedophilia and many other evil things and don't forget according to islam or evil islam womens are Just the farming of men and men can dig into them anyhow infact on camel too.

Muslim is the one crying about liberalism by belonging to the most barbaric cult to ever exist
So it seems her conclusion can be summarized as: "Sati was not religiously obligatory according to various Hindu texts BECAUSE a widow could ALSO choose the option of living in austerity." So it was either immolation or austere poverty. Hmmm... with such modern-day attempts to explain away the past as being "not so bad", it is little wonder why so many widows in India's Hindu society today continue to be treated with contempt!

this woman doesn't know anything about vedas.
@@thrinethran2885 1. Bhagavat Purana and Harivamsha mention that on Krishna's death his widows accompany Arjuna to his capital Hastinapur but on the way, robbers attack the entourage and kidnap some of Krishna's widows and some of the widows burn themselves alive.
2. Parashara son of Saktya in Verse 4.31-32 supports Sati. He says : मृते भर्तारि या नारी ब्र्ह्मचर्यव्रते सथिता सा मृता लभते स्वर्ग यथा ते ब्रह्मचारिणः तिस्रः कोटय्योडर्धकोटी च यानि रोमाणि मानुषे तावत्कालं वसेत्स्वर्गे भर्तारं यानुगच्छति || If a woman follows her departed lord, by burning herself on the same funeral pile, she will dwell in heaven for as many years as there are hairs on the human frame. Parashara is credited to have composed Verses 1.65-73 of Rigveda. Hence it is more than probable that the Verses 10.18.7 and 8 of Rigveda were about Sati.
3. Mention of Sati, whether with approval or disapproval, in the following shows the continuity of the practice, howsoever rare: Rigveda, Mahabharat, Madri, the four wives of Vasudeva, five wives of Krishna in Hastinapur, First inscriptional evidence of Sati is dated 463 CE in Nepal and Bhanugupta inscription dated 510 CE from Eran. MP in India: Vijnaneshwar who lived in 11th century and wrote ‘Mitakshara’ a commentary on Yajnavalkya Smriti’, prohibited Brahmin women from committing Sati but said that it is mandatory for widows of other castes. Jimutavahana, who lived in the 12th century and wrote ‘Dayabhaga’ a commentary on Yajnavalkya Smriti’ wrote that the object of Sati was to deprive women from their property rights. While Sayana wrote his commentary in 14th century, Raghunandan wrote his Shuddhitattva in the 16th Century in which he says that Verses 10.18.7 and 8 were to be read out before the widow climbed the pyre. Francois Bernier, ‘Travels in the Mogul Empire’, AD 1656-1668. In 1803, William Carey, the author of the Dictionary of the Bengali Language and a member of the Serampore Mission in Calcutta conducted a 'Sati census' and recorded at least 438 cases in the year within just a thirty-mile radius of the city.
4. Sati was prevalent all over India. In Karnataka, for example, in many villages you will find what are called ‘Masti Kallu’, ‘The Stone of Great Sati’ denoting a widow burning.
5. Francois Bernier gives witness to Wendy Doniger’s statement that ‘some tried to resist and failed’. “At Lahor, I saw a most beautiful young widow sacrificed, who could not, I think, have been more than twelve years of age. The poor little creature appeared more dead than alive when she approached the dreadful pit: the agony of her mind cannot be described; she trembled and wept bitterly; but three or four of the Brahmans, assisted by an old woman who held her under the arm, forced the unwilling victim toward the fatal spot, seated her on the wood, tied her hands and feet, lest she should run away, and in that situation the innocent creature was burnt alive”.
6. Wives were pledged/sold by the Hindus also. “न मा॑ मिमेथ॒ न जि॑हीळ ए॒षा शि॒वा सखि॑भ्य उ॒त मह्य॑मासीत् । अ॒क्षस्या॒हमे॑कप॒रस्य॑ हे॒तोरनु॑व्रता॒मप॑ जा॒याम॑रोधम्” || She never vexed me nor was angry with me, but to my friends and me was ever gracious. For the die's sake, whose single point is final, mine own devoted wife I alienated. Rigveda 10.34.2 “न निष्क्रय-विसर्गाभ्यां भर्तूर भार्या विमुच्यते, एवं धर्म विजानीमः प्राक् प्रजापतिनिर्मितम्” || Neither by sale nor by repudiation is a wife released from her husband.
It is still a state in development and hence it was something that the wife probably wanted, instead of living an insecure lifestyle. The only shame is that how the west and British have influenced India and belittled our people and culture.
