Yes that would be awesome. Sedimentary opal is from Australia and mostly the rest is volcanic
The Best and Finest Opals come from Australia
To be honest, some welo opals have been surprising me, but other than Ethiopia, Brazil and Indonesia have some of the wildest looking opal I've seen. Even Virgin Valley has some really top grade rough to be had.
But I agree, Australian opal's play of color especially in lower grade material is better.
Set up an infra red surveillance underground as well as surface monitoring.
Laws must be there to have claim jumpers banned from opal fields and/or jailed.

My dad had claims and lived in Lightning Ridge for about 10 years ,we have good memories not only Opal great Springs or bore baths 40 degrees bore water full of minerals and great stuff ( magic water ) shooting club and Opal show every July ,his house looked like this fellas same sort of accent as well lol

To catch a ratter try using glue traps. It doesn't kill them, but you do have to dispose of the body 💀...

texasdee slinglead its because its so remote so the general public doesn't care or even know what goes on there, all gold, opal, diamonds ect you find on public land is tax free and the government often buys out land and gives it to the miners as a gift, anyone can come here and prospect- a few years ago a guy found a huge gold nugget the size of a baby and we have pink diamonds that go for $1 million a carat. Most mining is done by the big mining companies but the government has left huge areas all over open to small prospecters to preserve the way of life and towns of early oz and make sure our large mining companies dont gobble up everything- hence why there the worlds largest mining companies

The same with a gold claim, but the sad part is that nobody helps anyone else other than themselves that way. Treat your fellow workers and miners like family. That way you have eyes everywhere. Family looks out for one another. That used to be the deal with miners.
The thing with 'ratters' is that it is a fairly specialized type of burglar.... the population in these areas is not high.. the people with the skill set is limited... to some degree the identity of these people must be known. Add video surveillance as a helper, Further although 'man traps' are illegal.. the accidental wire connected to roofing support connected to the pick.... :well he should not have been there in the first place". I think the future of the 'ratter' i s limited. Stunning video. Thanks a lot.

What do they do with a mine once they get all the opal out? Will it collapse? Is it a hazard? Do they leave those steel posts in there?
They fill it back in and yes they leave the post there
With Drilling from above ground is it possible to use electronic devices to scout below the surface perhaps similar to the process used to find oil deposits?
I'll have tried so many things and nothing seems to work. From divining to the latest technical equipment. Nobody has got rich yet from any other technique other than drilling
I'd imagine you could. There's equipment they use to find mineral ore veins and other gem stone veins.

I wonder why you do it this way instead of using a core sample machine? Seems like that would make it easier to determine what depth to dig when you do strike opal. LOL, but I'm a greenhorn, so take my words with a big ol' grain of salt.

Very interesting, I never really thought about how long it takes to find opal. It makes sense though, in my opinion an Opal, especially a black one is way better than diamond!

Look into leaving a few trained guard dogs down there!!! They will not bark or growl before attacking those Ratters!!!! Hate a thief!!! Have been burglarized four times at my Estate Jewelry shops over the years!!!!!

Can’t you cover the hole with some big equipment or something so the ratters can’t get in at night?
Yes we have a large concrete plug that we put over the hole with our loader but it is like a big sign saying we are on opal so they will find another way

Makes perfect sense to not say anything. It is unfortunately human nature and shameful. Like a great fishing hole, but worth potentially millions of hard earned money. I'm surprised they don't have a hatch system and on site security. Sad that mankind can be so greedy and selfish with no honor and respect. I personally would not do that and will always try to do my best to treat others with Honor and Respect. If we all strived to do that. The world would be a much better place.
