    You, as ever are a fount of wisdom and common sense. Right from when my GFR plummeted to Kidney Disease Stage 3 after I started thiazide diuretics I have followed your common sense wisdom and knowledge. I am now improved to Stage 2 and waiting my new blood results to see if I've been able to raise my filtration rate even higher. Thank you so much.

      Thank you for your support - and thank you for helping out at a dialysis center! While I'm not a fan of doctors not helping patients try to delay or avoid dialysis (not all, but too many see dialysis as the next step in kidney treatment), I am 100% grateful and supportive of the people who are there for the kidney patients that need dialysis.
      Having been lucky to be able to avoid dialysis, I have limited experience in helping patients that are on dialysis. I'm always on the look out for those who work in a dialysis unit who would be open to sharing tips to help make living with dialysis easier. Feel free to reach out to me at james@dadvicetv.com if you have any tips or recommendations.

    Since I started watching your videos, I was at 61% GFR last May 2019. I did limit my protein and would just usually eat half cup rice and veggies. My GFR is now up to 85% this March. I am hoping to get higher GFR next time maybe after 3 months. Thanks for your great videos, James! Keep it up!

    I'm having dialysis. Prior to this virus outbreak our temperatures would be taken prior to a session and at the end of a session - now they're taking our temperatures every half an hour. TALKING CLOSE UP spreads the virus! They're also distributing food and drink to the patients whilst they're on dialysis (always have done … I never eat or drink when I have my dialysis). I keep telling the nurses to NOT TALK as they approach me to take my temperature, etc. The staff are NOT practising Social Distancing amongst themselves … there is far too much "close-up" communication going on in the unit. Staff to staff, staff to patient, and patient to patient. At my last session one of the nurses was repeatedly COUGHING … without taking any precautions. I'm in the UK … so far there's only 172 (known) cases of Covid-19 in my locality.

    Very informative James. Keep it up! :)
    By the way, my Mom has been diagnosed with CKD Stage 5. With the proper diet, she is still fighting without dialysis. My only worry is that her hemoglobin count goes down. Her doctor advised to have epoetin injection. She is also taking iron supplements but is not helping her hemoglobin count. Is there an alternative? Thank you in advance.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +1

      Hemoglobins are created using Iron, Vitamin B12, Folate (B9). Her doctor should have had her add a B-Complex vitamin with Vitamin C to help with the Epoetin Alfa injections and Iron supplements. I personally take this one ( amzn.to/2TRAVZX ) AND ProRenal+D daily. I choose the Nephro-Vite over easily available local Super B Complex tablets due to it having less filler ingredients (personal preference). It's also good to look at getting more foods high in the B vitamins in her diet - but always consume B vitamins with some vitamin C to help them get absorbed. Good luck!

I can't stress just how amazing a good dietitian can be at helping to manage, reduce, or even prevent symptoms of kidney disease - which can give many people back their lives and energy.

      @@DADVICETV Sorry, very late reply! My father was in the process of getting a referral to a dietician before the corona virus happened but his primary doctor laughed at the idea. He even told his doctor about your videos and how a dietician helped you so much but his doctor said dieticians were only for obese people. Now that the corona virus seems to be slowing down we are hoping to find a new primary doctor.
      My father is so happy that you are providing all this content during the quarantine and wants to thank you and Jen for taking the time to help all those with kidney disease. He is 87 years old so I have to type for him but I want to thank you again, your videos have helped tremendously. I really believe if we did not find your videos my father would be in horrible shape because the only advice we were ever given by his doctors was to not eat salt and drink lots of water. God bless you James! Hope you are doing well.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +1

      When I was first diagnosed my doctor wanted to do one. I asked about how this would impact the treatment strategy and what could be learned so that I could weigh the risk. The cause of my kidney damage was very clear and a Biopsy would not make any difference in the treatment, so I declined to have one.

      @@DADVICETV Thank you for the prompt response. My husband just got diagnosed with CKD 4. He is just 30 years old and his EGFR is 20% . His blood work report showed exceptionally high BUN, Creatinine, Cholestrol, potssium, sodium..basically everything which are related to kidney issues. Our specialist has referred for biopsy to check the root cause. We were so shocked to hear his condition that we didn't ask any question on it. Do you think we can stall biopsy for a month or two and focus on diet or consult a dietitian first? Thank you.

    James...there are thousands of articles that say that sodium bicarbonate can help alleviate metabolic acidosis, and help preserve kidney function. But in one of your recent videos (#56 I think) you seemed to pooh-pooh taking NaHCO₃ for this purpose. Please clarify what you were saying. Thanks much.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому

      Great point - and there are people who Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) can help. Most Nephrologists will prescribe it (even though you can purchase it over the counter) when they believe it will be helpful. My push-back on it is when people talk about it as a cure and encourage people to start eating baking soda (or mixing it in water) with the expectation it will fix/repair/rebuild their kidneys. Like most supplements (include vitamins, minerals, etc.), they should be used for a reason.
      One of the more heartbreaking things I run across are people desperate enough to try anything to help improve their kidneys - and they don't consult with a doctor or dietitian. Eating baking soda is THE most common thing they try based on the messages I get. I see so many people claiming it will help, but haven't run into anyone who started taking it on their own and had it help. I have come across many people who are taking 1-3 650mg tablets a day at their health teams request and they are seeing some improvement or a halt in their GFR decline.
      I personally believe there is something there and more research is needed to determine when and how to use it. I see this in a number of things - including Activated Charcoal, Red Sage (Salvia), Alpha Lipoic Acid, and Sodium Bicarbonate.
      If you plan to use sodium bicarbonate, I would encourage you to discuss it with your health team first. Then get labs just before starting it - give it 1-3 months and get new labs to see what has changed. I would be more than happy to do a video with anyone who does that and talk about their results - seeing real kidney patients have success is far more helpful to others. I did try this myself almost 1 year ago and my doctor told me it would do nothing to help me, and my labs ended up showing exactly that - but we are all unique and it may work for some.
      Hopefully, that cleared it up. I've been wanting to do a video about Sodium Bicarbonate, but haven't found any kidney patients that have labs showing it has helped except those who are prescribed it by their health care team.

    My anxiety is so bad . I have a transplant and I’m now stage 3 !!! My question is are we doomed if we catch this ???

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +1

      Those are VERY valid concerns. Here is what I know (from doctors).
      1) The chances of catching this are the same for everyone - so practice social distancing, washing your hands often, avoid touching things (surfaces, face, etc.)...pretty much the same things you do to avoid the fluid with the extra 6 feet barrier between you and others.
      2) Those with kidney disease have a higher probability of having complications IF they get this. Currently it is estimated that about 80% of people have very mild symptoms and get over this without any issues. CKD patients have a higher chance of being in that other 20%. BUT (and this is a good but), only about 5% of people end up needing serious help and a hospital stay. So stay focused on not catching or spreading it.
      3) When it comes to those who have had a kidney transplant, I do not have any information. I've reached out over the weekend to some Nephrologist to see what they say.
      While this is hitting the news extremely hard - the issue isn't that everyone is catching this, it's just that TOO many people are catching it in such a small time frame that it is overburdening the health care system. That is why it is important for use to practice the tips in this video, those from the CDC, and from the local health authorities so reduce the number of people getting infected so that our health care system can handle everyone comfortably.
      Hope this helps!

    • @DADVICETV

      It is a great recommendation for everyone to limit close interactions with other people so that the spread of the virus can be greatly slowed down. My family and I have been doing self isolation from others since we returned to Ohio last week. The more people who take this virus seriously and limit contact, the sooner the load on the health care system will start to drop. We have also restricted ourselves to grocery shopping only once per week, and only one of use makes that trip.

      I have a couple things my doctors have recommended which I haven't mentioned yet. One of them is Alpha Lipoic Acid - outstanding at helping with inflammation and possibly protein leakage. I'm working on a way to setup a sub-section of my UA-cam channel where I can share what I'm doing with my doctors as it happens - right now I wait until I have completed something, then share results if it is positive. This sub-section would also share things which did nothing, or had a negative impact - I hope to launch it closer to the end of this month after some travel I have coming up.
