The audio through the trolling lesson was difficult. But in true comedic fashion was fine when he said"and that's all there is to it." At least now you can eat.
Glad to see you fishing! I know everyone including myself have been suggesting it. I don’t know how much you actually like fish but it hurt to see you eating spaghetti-os when you have such abundant healthy food around you always. Not to mention time.
My brother has a 37 Ft Sailboat. We fished a lot up on Lake Erie and Lake Huron with it. We trolled for Bass up around the Bass Islands on Lake Erie, and caught a bunch. We fished with a down rigger on Lake Huron. We caught a huge King Salmon, a nice large Lake Trout and a bunch of pink salmon at DeTour Pass on Lake Huron.
HI Sam, cool you are getting started fishing, nice video. Now the hand lines are not a good set up, you can loose a really good fish. Try to a get a 6o , six OH , reel with 50 or sixty pound test line and rod so when you troll you can fight the fish with drag adjustment. You do not have to buy a round clamp on rod holders you can use straps with clips to the reel. More offshore is where the larger Mahis and Wahoo will be. Your first Wahoo will blow your mind, the fight and awesome amount of fish, will feed you a long time. So nice to see you getting started. Remember to get or make a gaff. bamboo, a steel gaff hook, line to wrap it and epoxy coat, or a store bought gaff. 40lb Wahoo and Mahi are waiting for you. Try fishing near the FADS fish attracting devices, bouys. Good luck. Cheering you on from 90274. More offshore, mo better bro.
Trolling a lure eveywhere while under sail is easy unattended fishing. Fish that are not too small and not too big will come right up to your boat 10-20 meters behind, while larger problematic (like too large 30kg plus) fish will hang well back and take and destroy any lures, so keep lures in close and experiment with line-out length. Dragging hand lines around will get you snapped off every single time - you need a 15KG game rod and a 15KG lever drag reel with monofilament on it and learn to set the lever 'strike' setting at half the line breaking weight - now you get to fight everything you hook.. edit: set drag like this ua-cam.com/video/6JA9YI7ommM/v-deo.html
Totally agree with Steve. Invest in a rod and reel for trolling. Nothing as exciting on a sailing trip like the zzzzzzzzzzz sound of the reel when a fish is on!
@@svzigzag5898 Just by watching and listening to others. Fish are very curious and hungry and will check out anything at all for an easy feed, especially in deeper water. Smaller fish hide from predators under your hull while underway too - larger fish know this.. Imagine how surprised and grateful they are to find a lone rapala just back a bit from your yacht, yum yum!
Glad to hear you are getting the sound issues fixed. I would have liked to hear what he had to say. Keep up the good work on these vids. Your subscriber numbers are climbing! Getting close to 20K
You need a filet knife! that made my night when you whipped out the scissors to clean the fish! Too funny! Looked away then looked back and did a double take as you were cutting the fish with scissors. : ) I'll come aboard and fish for ya. Safe money on food for sure!
Good video, Sam! However, it would be useful if you could explain the setting of the trolling rig in more details. I was never successful in catching decent fish while trolling from the sailboat and would like to learn what am I doing wrong.
Baba Yaga trolling speed is critical. Freshwater trolling should not be faster than 1-1/2 Knots, while saltwater trolling is best around 3-1/2 to 4 knots. You also have to vary your depth depending on what fish is in the area. Sometimes you need a down rigger to get the lure to the correct depth.
Been waiting for this episode for awhile! Would love to see more fishing opportunities on the boat. Bottom/structure jigging during low wind conditions would be a good way to pass the time?
Great adventure, love the videos. But guys you ate 'Heidi' - have a look at ''natural-world-octopus-in-my-house' it might change how you think about Octopus
Wow wht a fish feast!! In ur next vids add some more fishing footage! Damn entertaining! What about the octopuss? It tastes damn amazing on a grill, or fried, or steamed (with some smoked paprika, lemon, and olive oil) :D cheers bro! 🤙
How’s your journey ! Really love your videos How’s your boat did u get your passport. You never know we’re your going I feel bad about Bahamas. Is a disaster. Hope they can rebuild getting a another storm heading to Bahamas again ., take care.
Sam I have a 22 foot westerly cirrus that I can stand up in great boat British 6' head room built for the north sea. Question is are you selling the boat becouse of length or liveability? Tristan Jones wrote 26 to 30 for a single hander. Thoughts please
Hey Sam. Love your journey and balls to do what your doing. Don’t know you personally but I have several friends that are just like you. Always learning and enjoying life that is a little different from most. Keep it up and be safe and careful. Didn’t mean anything by my previous comment, just an observation. 😀
Can I boat with you west........................? I have lived in Hawaii for years but currently am visiting Colorado...I’ll be back soon and am looking to purchase a sail boat and visit as much as I can west of Hawaii all the way to HK........???????? Maybe a collaboration on a bigger boat...?
It's not axiomatic that longer flippers = deeper free dives. Longer flippers give you more force per kick, but also are harder/use more energy per kick as well, requiring you to metabolize more oxygen. You'll get down to the bottom faster, but won't be able to spend as much time there. Everyone's physiology is different, some very fit people just can't hold their breath as long, although people with endurance sport backgrounds also tend to be better at diving.
@@jgalt99 Very interesting, I always assumed the flippers simply allowed you to use more of that force in a useful (propelling) way. When I swim without flippers I don't move very fast, with flippers I feel like I can zip through the ocean but don't feel like I spend more energy doing it. I mean I can swim a pool length and feel the burn from doing it, with flippers I can swim a pool length without even using my arms and I'm good to go again, and again and again. Maybe I just have poor swimming form.
Also watch out some fish have poisonous flesh (not many) and some fish have dangerously toxic spines (quite a few). Google ciguatera, LionFish, these are the two main ones I can think of, these two will put you in hospital. I'd like to chip in and buy Sam a reel when he's back on the water again.
Eating an octopus is like eating a dog. They're very intelligent, probably smarter than dogs actually. I love your videos but that made me sad, not gonna lie. Anyway, sail on!
Great job cooking and cleaning the fish. Had an awesome time sailing that day. Thanks again.
Chee! What an awesome day on the water, thanks again for taking us out! It was a pleasure 🤙🏽
You and fisherman's life have one thing in common and that is the love for butter.
So true
except for avocado,
Sam is a brave dude. The open ocean would freak me out, especially by myself.
Congrats on passing 19k subscribers already! Your real and pleasant videos are what the viewing public craves. Keep it up, and I wish you the best!
Literally living your best life. Good on you Sam.
You guys are Awesome....... Thanks for sharing....

Wow, who would’ve ever thought you’d collab with 2 of my fave Hawaiian UA-cam fisherman?! Love it! ❤️ Great job Sam! Your channel is amazing! 😃⛵️🎣🤙
Enjoying your videos Sam, raw boat life and showing how you learn. Kudo's for you!!!
Really like your channel 👍🇺🇸. Good job.

Cheeee nice catch, dang that guy could of freedive and got the drone lol.
Never seen someone use a scissors to clean fish 👌🏽
I got two brothers and no scissors... lol
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will hang out in Hawaii forever.

I can't wait until you learn to filet. Those fish looked good...did you eat the octopus?
more butter! and buy some lemon!
what’s the best speed for dragging a hand line? 3-4 knots? what’s the difference between just offshore and open ocean?
One difference is the depth of the water... lol
Ahi and Ono are the only way to go.
Man, IDK if I would kill an octopus. Such a cool animal 😕
agree, i cant do it anymore. too rad
I feel ya a lot only live 1-2 years i heard

First priority get a better camera and a microphone. Butter is great, but a little salt, pepper and cornmeal would be awesome. Such a minimalist. 🤪

Seemed Justin had much longer flippers, for deeper free diving?, compared to yours which is why he went so deep?

wind noise was problematic. need subtitles lol
