The Halloween preseason is here! This time of year we make lots DIY Halloween props, decorations, and awesome stuff and these DIY Fireflies from Disneyland are the newest thing we've added to our DIY Halloween decor!
The imagineers at Disneyland are famous for creating some amazing special effects and the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is one of the most classic of all! In the beginning of the ride as you go through the swamp, there are fireflies dancing in the trees. It's one of the most classic effects in the park and we wanted to create a simple, cheap, DIY version that anyone can do.
These Halloween props are very easy to make and require zero expensive tools. You can definitely follow along at home and make this with some basic materials (see links below). If you're looking for a fun weekend project to upgrade your Halloween decorations, this DIY project is perfect.
The history of the Disneyland Fireflies is really interesting and a great story! They were originally created by a designer named Tim Carter. Here is Tim's story: www.imagineerin...

Beautiful....pirates of the Caribbean fireflies are intermittent flashes of light on wires that are attached to fans that whip the led strand in random patterns...the random switch plate sends signals to light up bulbs in different sequences..they are much larger industrial size bulbs and the wires are really heavy duty. Yours are genius really great creativity...you are amazing..

My grandpa was the one who made the firefly lights at Disneyland I was 4 when my mom and I helped him make the lights. I cry every time I’m on the ride because I miss my grandpa so much! Only the fireflies and the floor lamps are the only lights in the park left that he made!

Pro-tip: 30AWG wire can be really hard to strip without damaging the wire, so use a lighter. Put the point of the flame where you'd put the cutter and when the plastic melts, grab the insualtion at that point and pull: the wire is stripped nice and clean! That little bit of melted plastic burns the fingers a little, so if your hands aren't calloused to hell and back, wear gloves.

    • @WickedMakers
      @WickedMakers  4 роки тому +6

Ahhh that’s a great tip! Yeah it was tricky stripping them properly. This makes a lot of sense.

Since it’s so time consuming to make these lights, you can always populate the background fireflies with a bit of electrical tape and a dot of glow paint. The quality ones will sell the design, and the cheaper ones will add to the numbers without as much work.

Great job. I’ve made these before and what really helps is a small spring on the string that supports the device. You can get sprigs for hobbies at places like STATS in Pasadena. Any small spring that expands with light tension will do. It give the firefly an erratic up and down motion that really sells the effect.

On the wires you will find that dipping the tip of your wires into flux then tin the tip with solder and then attach them and it also usually binds better and helps keep out cold Soldier joints.

Non-Pro tip To shrink the tubing i turn my soldering iron off for a minute of two and once it's cooled a little I carefully press it on the shrink tubing to shrink it. Obviously let it cool down some or it could possibly melt the solder and ruin the connection you have just made. I solder at 300C and the shrink tubing i use will shrink at around 125c.

Don't melt the solder with the iron. Begin by getting a little bit of solder on the iron so it is "wet". Then use the iron and that little bit of solder to heat the part you want to solder. Then you flow the solder on the hot part. If you just push the solder onto the tip of your iron and try to glob it on the wires you're likely to get a connection that won't last long.

Terminology assist! Battery terminals, solar panel. FYI I use my soldering iron to shrink heat shrink tubing, no naked flame near the electronics that way. I'm inspired. This shows users how to hack mass produced things. I hacked my eBay and ordered a bunch of LED tea lights for cheap so I can focus on the design of a bouncy firefly effect, though they tend to fly more linearly and not in circles like a mosquito but these guys will succumb to my design. Cheers.

fun fact the reason why you use different coloured wires is just so you know what's suppose to go to what. and it makes diagrams easier to read. ex. green is our ground, at least is everything I;ve ever wired its been ground. Red is hot, ex. heaters in refrigerators that are around the coil to defrost it.

My uncle worked at disneyland back in the days. He taught me the way they used to do this effect for the pirates of the Caribbean ride. I do this every year now and it works like a charm. Your on the right track but to make it easier , go to a 99 store and buy the tea lights. Then hot glue cardboard onto the lights making a base for the lights. Leave a bit of extra room, hang them with fish string from a tree bush, whatever it looks amazing. I used to use a fan to get them to move, but I noticed I did not need this. I use mine outside and the existing winds work fine.

You could just use crimps. Preferably the water proof ones that have glue inside or you can add hot glue. For 30 AWG you will need to buy them online as those are smaller than normal ones you get at auto parts stores. Or just twist and hot glue for a simple connection. These aren't rocket ships. But also google the nasa wire connection guide. They don't solder on rocket ships.

Most LEDs have a flat part near the cathode (ground wire). Also, for very low voltages you can just test the polarity by just touching the leads to the power source. A 3 volt button battery is a perfect way to test an LED.

You need to curve the blades and blow the fan on them on the ride each wire is hooked up to a fan that spins each lead and creates a flicker.

Don't forget to recycle the old batteries by taking them to a hardware store or supermarket that collects them for recycling! Even though they're awful batteries there's still raw materials in there worth saving!

The fireflies worked great in the pirates ride when the squirrel cage blowers worked which majority of them didn't. Since now i think they upgraded them without using the blowers/fans which is what we called them lol

On the blinder I recommend leaving an extra flap of tape so once you bend the leads you can fold it over and don’t have to glue or paint.

Desolder the LED from the circuit board and save it for later. Then solder the wires to the circuit board. It's a better option than cob jobing it. But great idea though.

Quick math: The supplies for this project would run you about $120. Add another $83 for the tools if you needed everything on the list. So, figure about $200 altogether for a dozen fireflies, minus taxes and/or shipping if applicable. Prices are based on the Amazon links provided above. I'm curious to know how long it took you to make one start to finish. Kudos for the killer idea!

Thanks for watching!! If you're starting from absolute scratch with not even basic tools and can only shop on Amazon, sure. Most of these are general supplies that you're only using a tiny fraction of for this project (e.g. little bit of solder, small amount of black paint, 12 out of 100 LEDs, etc.)
Our estimate for materials was about $3 per firefly in the end, since you end up with so much left over. If you upgrade the batteries, add a tad more, but that's entirely optional.

My daughter's favorite holiday is Halloween and we are so bummed that she won't be able to go trick or treating this year. So we decided to decorate our apartment and make some games etc. I have never done anything electrical before, but when I saw this video, I knew I had to try. I figure I can follow directions. I can figure this out. Soldering can't be THAT hard. LOL

Soldering isn't that hard, if you have a good solfeung iron. unfortunately not necessarily a cheap one will be effective but good luck.

Take it from someone who's done a LOT of soldering. Having an extra set of hands makes it a whole lot easier. LOL :)
