  • This is the final video in the playlist series of the Norton commando swing arm fix.
    In this video:
    - Reinstalling the rear wheel
    - Fitting at the speedo Drive
    - Adjusting the chain
    - Aligning the rear wheel
    NOTE: It was 20 1/8", NOT 30 1/8" between the axle and the Isolastic bolt.
    I measured from 10" to 30 1/8"
    - Adjusting the rear brake
    - Installing the side covers
    - Doing a preflight check…
    … And then taking it for a ride!
    Thanks for all your kind words of support during this project. I hope you enjoyed it.
    It was a very enjoyable project although I didn’t appreciate how big a job it would be.

    You've really cleaned that wheel up very nice, it looks good going back on, like new. I built an 88 inch harley in 95, and got caught up with the new fangled "o-ring chains", and the great promise they were said to have. I had massive problems with vibration, broken parts, and 20,000 miles later in a cross country trip, ended up back on a "diamond chain", and eliminated a dozen major problems, simply getting back to a decent chain. All sorts of cracked and broken parts. I note very few who ride classic bikes ever leave the "standard chain", and save themselves much grief. Yours looks like one with a well oiled life. That sounds so good firing up, familiar "wet sump" smoke, "old harley trick", lol. Very nicely done, she sounds exactly right. I really enjoyed the orderly dissection and reworking of this bike, looks as good as it sounds, thanks for sharing this maintenance video, very informative.

    I have the Mk2A, 1974 model just like yours and they are a great bike. I restored mine from a very bad state to a bike similar to yours, mine being the interstate version with the larger tank.
    Just two points, there was no need to fill the oil filter as this is in the return to the tank side of the oil system therefore it does not starve the engine whilst filling itself, and when you have had any oil pipes off or especially after a rebuild, you need to start the bike and look into the oil tank while running to ensure there is returning oil and it's getting around the system. Remember that the rear drive chain slack is adjusted at the tightest spot, which gets awkward when the chain gets a bit worn. Finally, I had to laugh at the blanked off chain oiler, I did the same to mine.
    Great video and thanks for sharing.

      Hi Radial9, thanks very much for your note. I really appreciate your comments. Thanks, I did check the oil tank.. in fact I had overfilled the oil a little since it had wet-sumped. So that was another cleanup job ;) Best wishes, Mike.

    Second time watching this complete 15 part playlist for my pre-planning of tackling my MKII swingarm. Terrific job MiTy! Looks like you could have gotten away without removing at least the left side Z plate...maybe even the right as the right side welch cap is the only one needing removal before swingarm comes completely out. The MKII has a long very thin/delicate bolt from one cap through the spindle to the other cap. And it drools the SAE 140 oil all down the CS and engine cradle....pretty much anytime you've got oil in there. Quite messy. Will pull it all apart, renew seals/bushings/felts and try using sealant around the caps to see if things improve. Not sure I'll do the collars just yet.
    And, I picked up your great tip on setting the rear alignment via measuring to iso bolts....I had been trying the much more tedious string around the wheels method and had given up making that work.

    Nice series. Just a note on the chain adjustment. I’ve never owned a Norton, but with Japanese bikes they usually want you to measure chain slack pushing both up and down on the chain, then add the two measurements together for total chain slack. Maybe the spec for a Norton is different ?

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  5 років тому +1

    Mike, since I’m going through this process myself... I was wondering if you use any special lubricant for a new chain? Or just soak it in oil before installing?
    I notice that you didn’t bother to rivet the link. My old chain used just a clip link as well. Lots of warnings online that this is dangerous and ill-advised, but my Norton’s been running for a decade with just the clip! I’d think it’s fine?

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Richard. Yes, I just use chain lube from the motorcycle store. It is quite good. I have never riveted the links and I don't know of anyone who does that. We all just use the standard clip links. Good luck with your swing arm project. Best wishes, Mike

    Mike, What style of handlebars are on your Roadster. I have the higher, American style bars on mine which are a bit high for me.
    Thanks Don

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Don, I think these were called the “euro“ bars. I’m sorry but I can’t remember where I got them from. I thought I got them from CNW (Colorado Norton Works), but I just looked at the website and they are over $100, so I am sure i didn’t spend that much! I seem to remember that they were about $30-$50. I think I got them from OIdBritts or Commando Specialties. Here’s the CNW website in case you want to go for the top of the line bars. coloradonortonworks.net/handlebars-european-clubman-style.html
      Edit: A viewer called Chase Stobbe (thanks Chase) also replied that a company called MAP Cycle has that pattern of bars at around $60.

    Ive got one of these but why doesn't mine have turn signals and both my exhaust pipes are on the right side.

    • @TheMightyGarage
      @TheMightyGarage  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your note. There are probably many reasons why you don’t have turn signals. But it sounds like you have an earlier version of the commando, which did not come with turn signals. And it sounds to me like you might have a model “S“, which had both exhaust pipes on the right hand side. Have you done any research on the various models? If you look online, using your serial number from your engine, you should be able to determine what model it is.
