TUTORIAL: Portable One Case Battery Charging Station

- Almost every single thing we use on film and video sets requires power, which means we need access to electrical outlets or we need a bunch of batteries. Recently I decided to make a case that would hold all my battery chargers in a nice, tidy, professional way. I wanted it to be able to charge all the standard batteries I use, have the ability for upgrades, and include some additional charging / powering options. The case we're making in this video will charge 3 different types of batteries WHILE powering lights and a camera, all from a single battery. While I recommend this kit I also encourage you to use these ideas and make your own based on your budget, gear, and charging needs.

The main consideration when building your portable one-case battery charging station is to think long term. You want things to be modular so when you get new gear that maybe requires new batteries you can swap small pieces of this out instead of having to replace everything. Overall this portable one-case battery charging station is a killer all-around DIY solution for powering your gear and charging your batteries at the same time. And the best part of this whole build is that you could use whatever case you have and essentially build a custom battery charger that fits you and your gear needs, and you could even skip the battery overall and just use this as a one-case battery charging station that plugs into the wall.

Okay, this is the coolest thing I've seen! I never even thought about doing something like this!
Do you worry about disconnecting the batteries while the case is closed? For example, let's say I have a smaller USB battery bank so that I'm able to charge everything and close the case. Would it be safe to put it in a car and not worry about it while the batteries charge?
Thanks! And I personally would NOT keep it plugged in with the case closed, at least without some testing first. I would do 15 min increment tests to make sure nothing was overheating, especially if you're leaving it in a car in like the summer or on a hot day. Honestly it SHOULD be fine, but I just have bad luck and wouldn't trust it without some testing first. :D :D

@@ghoulishjoe I bet if you added some ventilation it would be great and you wouldn't have any worries. You could feasibly wire in some small like 5v computer fans (usb powered) to provide some airflow too. LOTS of things to consider there, great idea!
Oh man, considering that power bank is able to have additional removable batteries, I might attempt this in the future, make space for an additional spare battery just in case, and fit a small solar panel in there! I just need to get a small hard pouch box because I mainly would use this for a laptop, USB C/A types of things, etc. Good work!

any problems with TSA?
I get stopped by TSA a lot due to the amount of batteries I travel with, and given what else needs to fit into my carryon I don't travel with this specific case so unfortunately no concrete answer there, but, I'm sure you could make it TSA friendly if you haven't already.

Battery pack! I've modified mine quite a bit since this video, but the great thing is that the concepts I cover can be modified to whatever your budget and gear needs are. So a Nanuk 930 can definitely work, just gotta figure out what you need to go in there :) Thanks for watching!

Great for travel. Curious how long that master battery takes to charge?
I do not have an exact figure, and I rarely let mine get lower than like 30-40%, but it usually charges full in an afternoon, so a few hours for a partial charge or several for a full-from-empty charge would be my guess. Thanks for the comment, I always feel like the good questions are shit I should have answered in the damn video :D

I never thought to do something like the battery case with a large rechargeable master battery. Just getting us dunder headed video guys thinking is a big accomplishment! :-D
@@timdanyo898 :D thanks! And yeah, I had never thought of it until recently, and then one day the idea was in my head and I figured I would try it out. I wish it were like 1/4 of the cost so it was more accessible to most folks, but that battery is a beast in terms of power and cost.

@@DroiMedia No offense, for sure. I'm thinking there has to be a way to "two-tier" to make it neater, such that the chargers are on the top layer and all the wad of stuff: plugs, strip, more chords, are underneath. I like the wall peg board type set up, but obviously sometimes we need to grab and go. I do appreciate your work and the fast response is great.
Oh yeah I get what you mean, I've got a larger one I use that I want to mount all the things on a "panel" that's really clean and hides the cords and stuff. Haven't hide the time to yet, but I think that's essentially the same concept you're talking about, merged with this box. I've also gotten away from using the large battery since I've been inside or near power a lot lately, so maybe I'll just do a nice clean version that has everything hidden or at the very least tied down a little tidier. How do you transport the batteries?
Transport as in an airplane? Or transport as in day-to-day? For day-to-day I just have a small canvas zippered bag (from like Home Depot I think) that I throw all my batteries in - AAA, AA, cam specific ones, V mounts, etc. - and then carry that along with everything. Easy and cheap solution.
@@DroiMedia gotcha. I am building a charging case that has 3d printed battery holders in it. I was curious if other people would find that useful for day-to-day or plane.
Cool build, but I hope everyone else does some research before buying the Omni ultimate. It is insanely overpriced. It is just a big phone charger with an ac port. And Lithium-Ion is a terrible choice for this application since LifePO4 batteries can be bought with twice the capacity for half the price and be used in extreme temperatures. Look at the Energizer 240 wh and GoLabs 300 as a huge upgrade for half the price of the Omni ultimate. They will be bigger but if you are charging big batteries like the NP Sony's you will need it.
Thanks for the input! And I agree the Omni is overpriced, way way overpriced haha. All of this, like every DIY project, is more for providing inspiration so people can go create their own customized battery charging rigs that fit their needs. :)
@@DroiMedia Totally, I love your video. Just want to make sure peeps do some looking around for the right battery. I still can't wrap my head around Omni's pricing. Even if you like the brand, the Jackery 300 costs less and they are the most popular brand and the 300 has more than twice the capacity and a mppt solar controller to plug in solar panels. I was too harch saying Lithium-ion is terrible though. It is for me since I live in the desert and regularly shoot in temps outside the safe zone for Lithium-ion, but that doesn't mean it isn't great for others. Unless of course it costs more than a similar LiFePO4 battery :).
@@naterpotater76 Yeah, it works OK for me in the midwest, but those few weeks in mid-summer and few weeks in mid-winter make it hard to use outside, but otherwise it does well (I also agree that battery tech is improving / has improved since I bought my Omni in their original Kickstarter)

@createdbykjvideo great question! I'm really digging pretty much anything by Anker, or you could rig up a couple of those sweet little SmallRig v-mount batteries. Nothing that I have fits as perfectly as that Omni did but there are so many better options that fit scenarios / budgets / rigs better these days.
