Sutherland's voice is particularly beautiful and lush in this recording. And the diction is marvelous, by the way (where are the naysayers in videos like this one?)! Pay attention at the solid and beautiful use of lower register here. Really amazing.

Her diction is notably clear here, it’s true. The tempo is lively, too. Altogether a remarkable performance. I wish the clip were longer.

In 1963, after her first 5 Normas here in Vancouver, Sutherland and other members of the cast did a gala concert . She wore this gown designed by Arnold Scaasi. The dress had flowers in shades of green, and the cloak was salmon pink.I read that when she went to see Scaasi to order a new concert gown she asked for basic black. His reply was 'You're a diva and you're going to dress like a diva!'

Fabulous singing. She was still singing this superbly in 1985 at Covent Garden. The voice even richer.

And I had the fortune to see her onstage as Lucia in 1982. The tix were so hard to come by, I had to register for a music appreciation course at a local college, whereby the performance was part of the course. By 1982, Sutherland wasn’t young anymore, but she still sang with amazing brilliance.

Dave Glo: If this clip is from the Ed Sullivan show in 1961 and you heard Dame Joan in 1982, 21 years later, she was “no longer young” at 56. So if you heard her 40 years ago, are you ‘still young’? Time doesn’t stop for anyone but Dame Joan was great until she retired. Unlike you, Glo-worm!

Yes, and I'm AMAZED by the beauty of her low notes here -- so rich and lush, almost like a mezzo, yet those stupendous high notes and the unbelievably effortless coloratura. WOW.

Sutherland's Lucia surely is one of the greatest stage performances of any kind by any person in history, beyond belief, beyond splendour.

My Dad heard her North American debut here in Dallas as Alcina and he said he could not believe her sound, it was unreal - high notes, runs and that fantastic trill. He heard many great singers here including Callas final Lucia which was painful and the infamous Medea, the best performance he ever heard period. Sutherland was his favorite singer, so glad we have UA-cam to see performances like this.

Divine!! and the Hair, so Iconic of early Sutherland (dark and with that to the side trick) and her face so beautiful with the dark lashes and eyeliner.. and how thick her sound is here... is it early 60s?

I may be mistaken, but I've read this was recorded in 1966. I'm also surprised by her diction. It's excellent here, much better than in other performances of the mid 60's. And, yes, she looks radiant. Her low register is also used to beautiful and rock solid effect here, she's delving into it without less caution than in other performances, and it sounds wonderful.

Protocol, essentially: the title Dame (or Sir) attaches to the holder’s first name or full name, but never to the last name alone. Sir Ian, Dame Judi, Dame Joan; but not Sir McKellen, Dame Dench, or Dame Sutherland.

Miraculous! Callas, Sills, Tebaldi are only sophomores compared to La Stupenda. Notice I didn’t include Caballé on the list, the only soprano who could really come close.

Actually from that Generation only Callas and Zeani were able to do what Dame Joan Sutherland did. Caballé was amazing, but didn't have trills, nor an extended upper register. Tebaldi and Nilsson were amazing, but they couldn't sing coloratura that well, and they didn't have trills.

I dare to say that Joan wasn't had the 'diva behavior', even being a prima donna she doesn't acted as one, this doesn't mean she don't had met, dinner, or been with famous, high societies or great personalities... Once she said that preferred to go to the work by taxis, than go by a Rolls Royce (she lived a simple life, although her famous) ;)

wrong. Artistry, charisma and acting ability in spades. She was not acting here. It was on the Ed Sullivan show In performance she was the only Lucia that seemed actually mad. The rest merely sound troubled. Ponselle, great also.
