- Today meet the 7 month old baby gorilla from the Prague Zoo (Zoo Praha) in Czechia (widely known as the Czech Republic in English). This Western Lowland baby gorilla is named Mobi. She was born on January 2nd to mom, Duni. Video clips provided by Martina Šmelová and team at the Prague Zoo. More gorilla videos from the Prague Zoo to come. (Gaia was born April 12th to Kijivu)
Mobi is the first baby for mother, Duni.
Gaia is the 6th baby for mother, Kijivu, who is 31 years old. The father is Kisumu and he is 27 years old. Gaia is thriving and is bonding well with her mother. Gaia is nursing from mom, suckling vegetables, and starting to toddle around.
Jane Goodall, the British primatologist and anthropologist chose the name Gaia for the baby. In Greek mythology the name Gaia refers to the Greek goddess of the earth, and it is sometimes even used to refer to the planet Earth.
The Prague Zoo is one of the most well-known and respected zoological gardens in Europe. In 2015 the Prague Zoo was voted the 4th best zoo in the world by TripAdvisor.com. It was listed along with the San Diego Zoo, Loro Parque in Spain and Singapore Zoo.

-In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your old cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). 80% of the world’s Coltan is mined in central Africa, which is wild gorilla habitat. Forests are being strip mined for this highly sought after mineral, with illegal mining even taking place in protected gorilla areas. BUT! Coltan is reusable! Clear out that old cell phone drawer! Our hope is, that the more and more electronic devices are recycled, this can slow demand for new Coltan to be mined in Africa.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

Oh, what well-coordinated reflexes Mobi already has at 7 months! Aaachh, Mobi tries to pull Gaia along, ‘come on, let’s play there’. But no, Kiuvu wants to keep an eye on Gaia. And what I have never seen with the mothers in Cleveland (maybe it happened), Mobi tries to tap her sleeping mother awake but mother continues to sleep for a while. You can see from Mobi’s entire coordination that she is given a lot of freedom to develop, just like Kayembe in Cleveland. When he was 1 year old he was already running around everywhere, climbing, jumping, tumbling. Nice atmosphere there in Prague Zoo. The silverbacks are Richard and Kisumu. There is One baby orangutan, do I have more videos? I don’t have any….yet.

They have 2 separate troops , 1 silverback in each one.
