  • This year we are celebrating the birth of Hip Hop 50 years ago. This was an epic time in American history that revolutionized not only music but art and fashion around the world. Creativity in the African American community was at an all-time high during this era. Notable iconic rappers and singers rose from this era. The likes of Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., and Aaliyah are among the artists who made an impact in music but they also made huge statements by connecting with the streets by wearing the apparel of up-and-coming clothing industry entrepreneurs and fashion designers of the time. It’s interesting to note that several of these creative entrepreneurs came from different parts of the country but they all converged in New York City to create and showcase their interpretation of urban fashion and define what style should look like in the Hip Hop Era.
In this webinar we will feature April Walker, a Brooklyn based entrepreneur who is the founder and designer of the iconic hip-hop brand Walker Wear. We will also be speaking to Maurice Malone a designer who is originally from Detroit. Maurice has created multiple Urban brands from HardWear by Maurice Malone to the hip-hop brand Maurice Malone Designs and most recently the Williamsburg Garment Co. We also have Tony Shellman who is from Seattle, Washington. He has founded multiple highly successful Urban brands; Mecca U.S.A., Enyce Clothing Co., and Parish Nation Clothing. All three will discuss their unique visions for the fashion that defined the Hip Hop era and how they each embarked on their journey into fashion. They will also discuss the challenges they faced developing, funding, and growing their brands. We will explore how these founders took advantage of opportunities to participate in the Hip-Hop movement and how they leveraged these opportunities to further their careers in the industry. The discussion will be centered around how these three creative entrepreneurs' contributions made fashion what it is today. They will also share their knowledge of how to build a fashion brand and an effective personal brand with creative entrepreneurs. Our conversation will be hosted by David Grandison Jr, a filmmaker, producer, and instructional designer who has created fashion programs for numerous brands like Women Wear Daily, Teen Vogue, and Complex Media and schools like the Parsons School Of Design, and the Fashion Institute of Technology - www.makingabrand.co
