They deposit soap scum which harbors dirt and bacteria. They make fabrics dingy, smelly, coarse and water repellent. Synthetic detergents are formulated to avoid these problems. Only clueless DIY enthusiasts still promote soaps.
Just wondering why you make a liquid from the soap flakes and not use them straight from the packet?

Nonsense! I just made a batch of it the other day and washed my clothes with it today. They came out clean and smelling nice.
